Tales from Darkness (Chronicles of Darkness Book 2) Kindle Edition
Let the mayhem begin...
Tales from Darkness is the fourth installment in into the Beating Back the Darkness world, and it takes readers on a wild ride through 10 different stories rife with espionage, betrayal, murder, and magical mayhem—each with lasting implications on their worlds.
The world of Aurion prepares for a new age in the aftermath of the Black Dragon's War. It is time for many things. It was time for rebuilding, for prosperity, for peace.
But ill-tidings are stirring...
The bloodshed is increasing between the dwarven clans of Northern Antirri. The feared shapeshifting Vursa clans are thought to finally be uniting under one banner, a war banner. Warnings of a new conquering king are whispered upon the wind. Rumors of war spread throughout the Old World. It is a time for anything but peace...
The world of Esaruul has been taken at sword-point by the Reichardt Empire. Their ranks of human legionnaires have spilled blood across a great deal of the northern and western reaches of the known world, but the Emperor demands more. Rival kingdoms are too divided to stand in opposition and find themselves at the mercy of the Empire. Rebellions have tried before and failed, but empire building comes with a heavy price—the price of blood. With new enemies being formed every day, the seedling of hope that is a new rebellion has begun to grow...

About the author

I am a firm believer that the Light shines brightest in the darkness. That's not only WHAT I write, but also WHY I write.
I love to explore humanity through fantasy because it allows us to take ordinary people (and orcs) through impossible situations and see what or who comes out the other side. It is often that through trials and tribulations that we get to see the most honest version of not only our characters, but ourselves. It is through this lens that we can discover truths. That is why I write dark, epic fantasy that dares to hope.
I am a Christian, husband, father of three young children, and a veteran. I have a BA in Communications. I was born and raised in Maine, and currently live in North Carolina. I love spending time in nature, and I especially enjoy hiking and swimming. When I'm not busy writing or chasing after my wife and kids, you can usually find me sneaking away for some quiet time with a good book. Some of the authors that inspire my writing are JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis, Brandon Sanderson, and Steven Erikson.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2019I loved this collection of short stories. Getting a glimpse into the lives of characters I already know and love (or hate) and meeting new ones is amazing. My favorite is the assassin towns So short and Echo, though not Echo so much. I lived the mercy of the Dwarf King and feorceness of the Wolf Pack.
Tiger I am begging you to hurry up and wrote more for this world cos I NEED to know what happened to them all.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2019Love the whole series and highly recommend it. Well written and well developed charters who flow from one book into the next. Lots of challenges and all kinds of foes and adventures in various different lands. Never a dull chapter or charters. You never know what will happen next.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2020Quick selection of 10 shorts, none overlapping. Each well and individually crafted. Amazing range of diversity. RANGE of desires, met and unmet.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2019As a fan of Beating Back The Darkness series, this tome of short stories gives many different views and characters of the world Hebert has created. As usual, Hebert writes well and each story is infused with his imagination which seems to show no limits! This is such an enjoyable read of snippets of this world and its different characters, quests, wars and mystery. If the reader did not know all these stories were written by the same author, it would be tempting to think it was an anthology set in the land of Aurion and written by different authors!
For those who have not read any of the volumes of Beating Back The Darkness, they are in for a treat. Starting at the beginning and reading all the way to this new volume will give the reader a firm foundation of what this series is about that sets the stage for the continuation of it in the succeeding volumes to come.
This is well worth the read, either as a standalone to be introduced to this series and the fantasy worldbuilding all of which are excellent and Hebert its master or as an integral part of the series.
