The Jock Script : Nerd/Jock MM Romance (The Script Club Book 3) Kindle Edition
Asher-
Swipe left, swipe left, swipe left. Sure, the idea of a quick, no-strings intimate rendezvous via hookup app sounds oddly thrilling, but it’s simply not me. Or maybe it is me, because it happened…and I liked it. Until I realized he looked familiar for a reason. A bad reason. Now I’ve made a faux pas with the sexiest man on planet Earth, and my internal karma system requires me to fix it. Help!
Blake-
I may seem like I have it together, but the truth is, I’m a hot mess. I’m so deep in the closet that I can’t remember my real name some days. That’s okay. The benefit of one-night stands is anonymity. Until Asher. Not a total surprise. I’ve always had a thing for geeks, but I’ve never met anyone like him. He’s a pint-sized dynamo on a quest for perfection who can help me come out…if I follow his script.
Hmm. I’m in.
The Jock Script is an MM bisexual, geek/jock romance starring a bowtie wearing nerd, a sexy lacrosse coach, and a shenanigan inducing script!

About the author

Lane Hayes lives in sunny Southern California with her amazing husband, who thankfully doesn’t mind cooking, and their fabulous fox red Labrador, George, who’s pure mischief. Both provide oodles of inspiration for the low-angst, humorous books Lane loves to write.
She’s been telling stories about sexy, funny, sometimes geeky and quirky men who find love for a dozen years now and loving every minute. In her previous life, she sat at a desk and dealt with numbers, so yes…romance is much more satisfying!
Lane loves tea, travel, and chocolate…in any order. Add a book and she’s set!

Listening to Alexander Cendese narrate The Joke Script was an entertaining and fun experience. He really did a fantastic job bringing to life the heroes of this tale , Asher and Blake . In my opinion , those are two of the most charming , quirky and relatable heroes Lane Hayes have thus far created.
The Jock Script is vintage Ms. Hayes . A low angst , low drama , steamy , romantic , full of heart and humor story , with engaging and likeable main characters and a fantastic cast of secondary characters. Her stories always leave me with a big smile in my face and a lightness in my heart.
Yes, I recommend it.
Yes, I will be re-listening /re-reading it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2023This is a sweet, uncomplicated and eventually steamy part of a series which is just delightful overall. The nerdy ginger Asher and the movie star looking Blake hook up sort of accidentally and then get to want to know each other.
What happens is that Blake wants to finally come out of his bisexual closet and basically needs a coach and there is no one in town who likely can navigate him along except Asher.
This slightly unusual set-up matches the personalities author Hayes has presented us. It's another breezy trip in a neatly developed series that has some mild storms along the way but nothing for which they need more than an umbrella.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2021Asher is a loveable nerdy brainiac who keeps himself honest by giving himself a daily letter grade on his general performance as a human. Blake is a bisexual-but-in-the-closet lacrosse coach at a private school. When they meet for a one-off hookup through an app, sparks fly… Of all the Script Club nerds, Asher is the one that got under my skin the most, and I loved his sweet, awkward humor and the challenge that Blake represents to his sensible, logical nature. Nerd/jock pairings are by definition opposites attracting, and when physical chemistry progresses to a deeper and more meaningful connection, a trope is transformed into story gold: Ash’s selfless desire to be the best human he can be finds him helping Blake with his coming out process (“the Script”), and their resulting “friendship” is everything… This story was super sweet, super hot, and satisfying on every level. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2021Asher and Blake complimented each other perfectly and I couldn't get enough of them together. I enjoyed Blake's sense of humor and how they'd play off of each other with Asher's dry retorts bringing in even more laughs. I always have a love/hate relationship with endings like this one, where it seems like the grit of it was glossed over, though I totally understand why it was done this way. I would have loved another chapter from Blake's perspective but I'm sure that meeting would have been a snooze fest, haha! Lane frequently blesses us with shorts with her characters and I can't wait to see what she gifts us with when it comes to these two.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2022Their story had me laughing, awwing and generally feeling good.
The humour, especially how literal Asher is (and Blake knows how to yank his chain), is clever. Both men were great together, I liked how they learnt from each other in the goal to make Blake more comfortable with coming out. There were some ups/downs, but they were able to get through with minimal angst.
It was nice to see other members of the Script Club and how supportive they were.
Really enjoyed it!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2023The development of the love between Blake and Asher kept me involved throughout the book. Looking forward to seeing who gets lucky in the next book in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2022This one started off WAY more interesting than the other two. I immediately liked Blake and respected Asher and found him interesting. I love that Blake is an educator first and foremost, and his sport is lacrosse which we don’t usually see.
I was annoyed when Blake ended up being the “Jake” from book 1, but it never became too big of a deal. It also made sense with his story. So that’s fine. It WAS a little weird how Topher didn’t care at all anymore, because he made it seem end-of-the-world level in book 1. But since it blew over and I didn’t like that plot point in the first place it’s fine.
Asher’s backstory is so extreme but I actually like the level of part it played. It wasn’t overdone but it did affect his personality and lead to a conversation with his mom later. I feel like it was all resolved a bit too easily, but oh well.
That actually leads me to my biggest contention with this series… the character development, relationship development, and plot development are always centered around the emerging bisexual. This starts to be really frustrating when we get rehashed plot points and hurdles in every book. There is another character? With issues?? Sometimes it feels like we’re glossing over a unique and more interesting character (the nerd) by focusing all our attention on the guy who is perfect in every way except he’s closeted. Is it an issue? Yes. Does it need to be the entire story? No. DO THEY NEED TO BREAK UP FOR TWO DAYS OVER IT? NO!!!! WHY DO THEY ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS HAVE TO BREAK UP BEFORE BISEXUAL GUY COMES OUT?!?!? THEY CAN JUST TAKE 2 DAYS OFF?!?!? NO NEED FOR ROLLING AROUND IN THE PITS OF DESPAIR?!?!?
It’s not only that it’s unnecessary. It’s that this happened in the book before this, and the first book. It is so tiring and pointless. Everyone, and I mean everyone, knows they’re going to get back together. Blake has been wanting to come out for years. And he got help. What part of that is “not doing it on his own”? “Not doing it for himself”?
Here is my rant in my notes when I reached that plot point bc I need to put it out there:
“Ok also. Why does he have to do it all on his own?!?!? Why cant people depend on other people for help when they need it??? I know he did that to begin with. And I know he needs to decide when to tell them, and he has to be the one to actually TELL people. But why did he have to stress out and go crazy over the weekend all by himself?? I know Asher indirectly helped him by making the binder he could read and directing him to resources. But what’s wrong with Asher sitting there with him? What’s wrong with them still being a couple?? Blake would still be doing it for himself. He already hated being in the closet. HE approached Asher before they started an official-ish relationship because he wanted to come out above everything. So this plot point just pisses me off a lot. It’s pointless and doesn’t add anything to the story besides unnecessary strife no one needed nor asked for. There are enough hurdles for Blake with his CAREER and coming out to literally everyone in his life without the added despair of having to break up with his boyfriend for NO GD REASON?!?!?”
Finally: I love Ezra. And I LOVE Carly and the lacrosse team. I wish we’d seen more of Blake and later, Asher, interacting with them. This book was fun to read and I gobbled it up except for the really frustrating ending part. Which I’ve already talked about ad nauseam so all in all, good book! Best of the three I’ve read. Will not be reading the next one because the two characters are both new to the series and I don’t want that for myself.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2021A nerd + a jock can = perfection!
Love sneaks up at the most inopportune time but is exactly what both of them need and deserve. Job pressures aside, as well as a closet to emerge from, keep the tension high but love and humor make the journey great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Favourite so far!
“My biggest truth isn’t that I’m bi. My biggest truth is that I fell in love with the guy who taught me to trust my voice and follow my heart. I love you, Asher. I love you.”
I love this series and I loved this so much.
Firstly, I'm so mad I dived right in. I really wish I would have waited just a little longer. Dammit. But I enjoyed it so much.
Anyway:
Asher and Blake are precious together. Right from the start they have great chemistry and this back and forth that made me have a stupid goofy smile on my face almost the whole way through.
Asher simultaneously amused me and punched me right in the feelings. Because honestly I got him on a level with the whole personal karma thing. Trying to balance that feeling of responsibility. But his adorkable behaviour also made me smile so much (oh my god. The coffee. I died.)
Blake reaching a point of being tired of hiding his bisexuality but not exactly knowing how to unravel who he is and who he's worried people think he is was such an important part to the story and how Blake and Asher navigate their relationship.
The *moment* with Asher & his mom. Whew. I cried. But also the guilt Asher carried for a lot of things even where Topher was concerned broke my heart.
Mostly though it's pure joy. Blake & Asher are absolute joy together. The way they fall into each other, the sweetness, the steam, the in between, ugh I love them together so much. My face hurts from smiling so damn much. My only issue if even that is that the moment of conflict, the lead up to the grovel scene (and I looove a moment of grovel. I can't help it lol), Lane Hayes seems to fall into a very samesy scenario. Just an observation.
I'm surprised with who the next couple is gonna be. I was kinda like "oh. Ok." Lol. I have no doubt I'll enjoy their book but I was like what about Tommy?! Holden?! (Maybe even a Tommy and Holden book?) Ezra?! But I'm hoping there's more books to come! This series is so good, it's sweet, steamy and fun and romantic all around and I can't get enough!

3.0 out of 5 stars coming out one step at a time
Blake is in the closet because he’ll lose his job, but also because he’s not ready to lose his friends. So, he uses a hookup app to explore being bi.
Asher wants to hook up after a long dry spell, and he and Blake have a strong electrical charge from the start.
Blake wants to come out, and Asher agrees to help him so he can regain his own standard of perfection.
They become friends, but can’t stop their attraction, and eventually, Blake is ready to reveal all.
Sweet story with Asher’s personal grading idea and the support from friends on both sides rooting for them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet story
This was another great story in this series.
Blake and Asher are perfect for each other even if they can't see it.
I loved their story changes, the twist and turns. It was fun, sweet, hot and made me a little teary as well.
A great book from start to finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for each other
MM, Nerd/Jock Romance. An easy to read page-turner that I found to be sweet, passionate, funny and at times feature some light angst. Although part of a series I think the story could be read as a stand-alone with no loss of enjoyment. An enjoyable read. Guaranteed HEA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Odd couple
When i first meet Blake (jake) I didn’t like him but as I got to know his story and the pain he is going through and Asher helping Blake out to come to terms with himself. There are an odd couple but they work so well.
