- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2022The 716 is a brilliant book. Solid writing, fantastic worldbuilding, and wonderfully fleshed-out characters that you quickly become emotionally invested in. The concept of the female-dominated society where men are oppressed drives the story, but it’s the little details in the inverted gender roles that really help to sell it–the objectifying referral to vehicles as “him/he” instead of “her/she” as we do in our current vernacular, or the clever use of the term “glass ceiling” (which is a bit spoilery so I won’t give it away, but I loved it!) Splitting the POV between the two main characters allow us not only to see what Andy’s life is like as a young man in this society, but also through the polar opposite lens of Olivia’s life as an extremely-privileged female. The author does a beautiful job of showing each of them as they come to terms with their shifting views and ideas. We also get POV glimpses into the lives of some of the other men and non-binary folks in Meloria, and those enrich the story as it unfolds.
The 716 is a wonderful expression of what true feminism is at its core: equality. That no gender–especially a limiting binary construct of gender–is above another. I’m definitely looking forward to future installments in S.J. Pratt’s brilliantly created literary world!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2022The 716 has flipped the gender norms -and I love it!
Pratt has built an incredible world set in a time long, long after the “Wars of Men,” where males are believed to be bred for the home life of child raising and cooking, to be seen and not heard, and to never go to university. An endearing MC, Andy, has found he cannot fit into this expectation for his life. And that is where our story begins.
The 716 is a fun, smooth, and inventive read. A great introduction for someone new to sci-fi. A way to show men how it sometimes feels to be viewed as a woman when you aren’t thinking “oh, but that’s normal.” And a STEMinist novel screaming to be told for women. The story left me wanting a Ray as my best friend, to challenge my own limits -whether self imposed or by society, and had me chuckling often. As a jet technician myself, a woman living in a world of men, this book had me smiling from ear to ear almost every chapter.
This story is pertinent to any gender and of a wide age range. A great addition to home and classroom alike. And it not only encourages change and creativity, but embraces it.
Don’t shy away. Give it a shot!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2023This wonderful sci-fi book is set in Meliora, where women rule the world because men messed it up. Men are not allowed to become engineers or even get an education. Sound familiar?
Though I found the beginning a little slow for my taste, I think this book is an amazing start to the series. Readers are introduced to the protagonists as Olivia takes the REAL test that will decide her future, while Andy looks on longingly from the sidelines. This reversed gender role, rags-to-riches story, takes you through the daily life of these two characters as they come to terms with their own missed preconceptions of the world.
Pratt did a wonderful job in placing her characters in their reversed stereotypical roles while maintaining their respective masculinity and femineity. I thoroughly enjoyed the part where Andy accidently showed a small portion of his ankle, and I laughed out loud when a female reprimanded him for it.
I know most people will love the cute little robot Ray. Don't get me wrong, I love Ray, too. But my favorite character actually ended up being Hargreaves, Olivia's faithful bodyguard.
Overall, I definitely recommend checking out this book. I can't wait until the next book comes out. And now I really want to take that REAL test.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2022Andy wants nothing more than to be an engineer. Unfortunately in this version of the future, men aren’t allowed to study engineering ... or anything else. When he strikes up an unlikely friendship with Olivia Lim, daughter of the ruler of Meliora, he finds an ally willing to break the law to help him.
As Andy learns there are other men like him who want the opportunities open to women, he broadens his dreams to encompass equality for all genders. Can he convince his prejudiced and privileged friend Olivia to support his cause, or will her position and her own dreams cause her to reject him?
In the style of The Lunar Chronicles and A Face Like Glass, The 716 twists real-life society in order to illuminate and examine prejudice and injustice. Though there are many examples of the swapped gender roles trope in modern literature, Sarah Pratt’s approach is intriguing, in that the book alludes to the justification for the removal of men from roles of power in society. I liked the fact that there was some thought given to how this fictional society ended up in its unbalanced state. The inclusion of New Zealand landmarks also provides a sense of history to the story, lending credibility to the implied backstory.
I appreciate how the characters’ personal journeys come in fits and starts as they confront and ultimately overcome their own prejudices, and I appreciate that all the characters have prejudices and misconceptions to address—even the downtrodden men.
The book’s social messages come through loud and clear. For my adult tastes, the drumming of the message was a bit heavy handed, but I have no doubt that the YA audience at which the book is aimed will absolutely love it. The engaging characters and intriguing world will draw readers in, and the social message is an important one.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2023Andy is a gifted engineer from the wrong side of the tracks in a world where wealth matters immensely and boys aren't allowed to be much more than eye-candy.
There's great character development, excellent world-building, and a romantic subplot that's exactly the way I like them: clean, realistic, and entirely delightful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-written YA sci-fi with a great cast of characters
The 716 is a stunning debut by author SJ Pratt
Set in the distant future, the world was destroyed by the Wars of Men and a new world has been rebuilt on the ashes of the old, only this time women have taken control. Women can go to university, they can be leaders, and kindness and empathy are valued, along with feminity, history, teaching and engineering. Men, on the other hand, are not deemed capable of going to university and must give up what work they do have upon marriage. Against this backdrop we meet Andy, a man who does not fit into the common mold and who dreams of one day becoming an engineer, a path that is denied to him because of his sex. Through a chance encounter he meets Olivia, the young woman who has it all; intelligence, beauty, wealth and power. They bond over a mutual love of engineering, but it is Olivia's grudging acceptance that Andy might be her intellectual equal thay sparks a fire within him for change, and the second half of The 716 sees those flames fanned brighter.
The 716 is YA Sci Fi, but at its heart it is a feminist novel begging for gender equality and an acceptance to see gender as a spectrum. The main character, Andy, is endearing and relatable, and his best friend RAY is so brilliant I wish I could meet him. Olivia straddles the line between arrogant and charming, and author SJ Pratt masterfully created a complex character here that will win you over. The writing is fluent and smooth and the pacing is perfect. The 716 is very accessable as far as Sci Fi goes and I highly recommend it for both teenagers and adults, and I think it would make a good book to have a class discussion about in schools.

5.0 out of 5 stars What if the world flips the (gender) norms? The 716 will show you
What if the world flips the (gender) norms? The 716 does exactly that, everything has shifted. It shows us a world where woman rule, standing on the pedestal & are able to be anything they can dream off. While men are good for taking care of the children, manual labour, housekeeping & functioning as arm candy to show off.
In this novel we follow the story of Olivia, the daughter of Our Mother, expected to follow in her families footsteps to become the next.
But we also follow Andy, dreaming of becoming an engineer while being stuck working a job next to all the house chores to finance his sisters education. The color of their Identifeye Light dictating how they can life & what they can do. A world ruled in two basic genders; girl & boy/woman & men.
This book will have the characters learning to look past the basic genders, introducing us to non-binary characters & sexism ingrained within the world.
The author has build an believable world with norms & values that are seen back strongly within the characters nature. A backstory with a nod to our world woven in seamlessly.
I can't wait to read the next book within this series & I am looking forward to Andy & Olivia's journey on taking on the world & changing it forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining thought experiment, turning our world on its head.
It took me a while to get into it, but I ended up enjoying The 716 immensely. It's a YA novel, and as such stays on the lighter side, but it still brings its point across powerfully. I think it'd be a great film (if anyone dared make it).
There were some nice twists and turns and by the end I was already looking forward to the sequel. So I hope there's going to be one!

5.0 out of 5 stars A swiftly-paced, gender-swapped, coming-of-age sci-fi adventure
The 716 is a gender-swapped, dystopic sci-fi set in the future world of Meliora, following Olivia and Andy on the first steps of their coming-of-age journey. Meliora is ruled by women; men’s choices are limited, their behaviour observed and controlled, their characters and actions the source of public discussion by strangers. Olivia moves through this world with ease, the daughter of its ruler, though she inwardly struggles with her desire to escape her mother’s expectations and become an engineer. Andy struggles against the systems and structures that repress him, hungry for knowledge and experience, striving towards the same impossible dream as Olivia, with far less resources and freedom to achieve it.
S.J. Pratt’s debut is swiftly-paced and tightly written, full of poignant observations and wry humour. Olivia and Andy are relatable, fully-realised characters, easy to empathise with and cheer for, and their gender-swapped coming-of-age journey serves to highlight the inequalities embedded in the structures of our own world, and emphasise how difficult they can be to both acknowledge and escape. Their relationship is sweet, natural, and real, full of ups and downs and misunderstandings, and both characters grow throughout the novel, giving a thorough base for further character growth in the novel’s sequels.
If you enjoy sci-fi coming-of-age adventures with dystopian themes and a strong message of social and gender equity, then this is the perfect novel for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - A clever sci-fi with a feminist twist
If you've ever wondered what the world would be like if all the sexism and gender norms were reversed, then read The 716 and you'll get a little taste. Through Andy's eyes, we explore the frustration and despair caused by everyday discrimination and not being able to follow your dreams simply because of your gender. Through Olivia, we come to see the deep-rooted fear of having to hand over your power and privilege in order to give others a shot. And it's just so...so CLEVER!
This book is interesting and thought-provoking, with a diverse cast of characters that will dig their claws into your heart. RAY, the light-emitting bot, is an endless joy, and as someone who studied engineering, I just loved the science and engineering talk (but don't worry, it's easy to follow). I definitely recommend you give it a try, so go ahead and grab your copy today! What are you waiting for?
