The Basilwade stories were originally published on the CaféLit website, where you can access short stories that go nicely with a cuppa. We even suggest a drink! Dawn Knox’s stories contain characters and situations that may seem a little larger than life at first glance but we can soon see that everyone involved is very human. And don’t we all recognise the quirkiness of village/small-town life?

Reviewed by Ankita Shukla for Readers' FavoriteFive Star ReviewWhat a stress-buster The Basilwade Chronicles by Dawn Knox has been! This hilarious ride began with Derek going to a speed dating event. Soon, his tactless remarks about the ladies' appearances signaled that he would not find a date. And yet, he managed to share his bus ride to town with a very reluctant Mary Wilson. Meanwhile, Mary Wilson wanted to get her mother off her dating case. She surmised she could introduce Derek to her mother, which would be enough to distract her. Nevertheless, she did not want her mother to start referring to Derek as Mary's intended or fiance. Oblivious to the meaning of the expression, she introduced Derek as a "friend with benefits." Obviously, the result is a hoot. The characters of The Basilwade Chronicles by Dawn Knox range from goofy to self-absorbed people of a small town. They blurt out words without thinking and act on impulse. Indeed, these attributes add to the comedy of the plot. Although each one of them is amusing, Mrs. McSquirtle was the champion of them all. For her dose of "medicinal brandy," she would do just about anything. Subsequently, she would slur her words and lose track of everything. The residents of the Willows Retirement Home were another priceless contributor to the hysterical plot. Indeed, Dawn Knox is an excellent storyteller. From the side-splitting conversations to the comical events, she tickles just the right bone. The Basilwade Chronicles by Dawn Knox is a perfect book to unwind with after a stressful day. Dawn spent much of her childhood making up stories filled with romance, drama and excitement. She loved fairy tales, although if she cast herself as a character, she’d more likely have played the part of the Court Jester than the Princess. She didn’t recognise it at the time, but she was searching for the emotional depth in the stories she read. It wasn’t enough to be told the Prince loved the Princess, she wanted to know how he felt and to see him declare his love. She wanted to see the wedding. And so, she’d furnish her stories with those details.

Nowadays, she hopes to write books that will engage readers’ passions. From poignant stories set during the First World War, to the zany antics of the inhabitants of the fictitious town of Basilwade; and from historical romances, to the fantasy adventures of a group of anthropomorphic animals led by a chicken with delusions of grandeur, she explores the richness and depth of human emotion.

A book by Dawn will offer laughter or tears – or anything in between, but if she touches your soul, she’ll consider her job well done.

She has been a finalist in the Wishing Shelf Book Awards for 2017 and 2020, Readers' Favorite Book Awards 2018 and Independent Author Network Book of the Year Award 2018.

Dawn has also written two plays about the First World War, which have been performed in England, Germany and France.

It's been a long time since I spent so much of my time laughing while reading a book. Endlessly inventive, crackling jokes, no two characters alike. And every story ends, not with a cliffhanger or a hook into the next one, but the eager need to answer the question, "NOW WHAT HAPPENS?"

If Basilwade doesn't actually exist somewhere, it thorougly deserves to!

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a fun read

I bought this book with the expectation of a fun read, and I was not disappointed. The pages were packed with jokes ranging from subtle to laugh-out-loud. I’m full of admiration for the author to have created such absurd characters and situations which was reminiscent of a Tom Sharpe novel. I was disappointed that the book did not end with Derek as I wondered if he’d made any progress in his quest and it would have then been a neat full circle of tales. But for the entertainment value of the read, I can forgive that. If you like your sense of humour to be tickled then I thoroughly recommend this book!

Different type of book to what I normally read. I did not enjoy the book. However it was well written and funny in a kind of carry on film theme. You may enjoy it

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Very Good Book from Dawn Knox

I've just finished reading this book and I found that once I'd started I couldn't put it down.
It never ceases to amaze me the amount of different subjects that Dawn can write about whether it be romance, science fiction, history or anything else.
This book had me laughing with every page I turned and I was quite disappointed when I had finished it. I hope there will be a Basilwade part two.
I look forward to Dawns next book whatever subject she writes about.

I love this book! The characters and their escapades are so funny. Bought this during lock down but only recently got round to reading it and wished I had read it earlier. Didn't last long though as book was so good only took me a couple of days to read it all!

Great to see an author with an innate eye for humour in the daily lives most of us lead. OK, so it is exaggerated to bring it out, but if you belong to a club, go to a wedding, ever been speed dating, you will recognise the characters, the dilemmas, the laugh out loud situations in this book.
What I particularly enjoyed was the character links between each story, the flow that means each fresh chapter was about someone you had met previously and, very gradualy, the whole community was revealed in all its hillarious normality.
Following the more serious 'The Great War, 100 stories in 100 words, and the speculative, 'Extraordinary', this book represents a breadth of writing imagination that is rare in one writer, Well done Dawn Knox.
