About the Author

Who doesn't love a cracking crime story, full of twists? I'm British crime thriller writer A.A. Abbott - known to friends as Helen - and I believe a good read is one of life's greatest pleasures. I write fast-paced suspense thrillers set in the British cities of London and Birmingham. My latest books, the Trail series, follow the fortunes of two families running a vodka business - and what happens when they fall out with a London gangster. The Bride's Trail leads from London to the secret tunnels below Birmingham's historic Jewellery Quarter. The trail continues with a kidnap in the former Soviet Union in The Vodka Trail, an ill-starred venture with a marijuana farmer in The Grass Trail and a killer on the loose in The Revenge Trail. Like 10% of us, many of my family are dyslexic. While I'm not, I want my books to be enjoyed by readers with dyslexia and visual impairment too. That's why I publish my thrillers in a LARGE PRINT dyslexia-friendly edition as well as the standard paperback and Kindle versions. Who doesn’t love a page-turner packed with mystery, twists and suspense? Those are the books I yearn to read, and I enjoy writing them, too. I’m British thriller writer A.A. Abbott – known to friends as Helen – and I believe a good read is one of life’s greatest pleasures. As a city girl, I've lived and worked in London, Bristol and Birmingham, so it’s no surprise that my books are often set there.

Don't forget, when you’re reading an ebook, you can adjust the font on your Kindle to suit your needs. Bright Lies is also available as an audiobook, recorded by amazing voice actor Eilidh Beaton.

This was well written! Characters are engaging and lots of clean action! Loved it and am headed now for the next one to read. As Paul Harvey, in America, says ..... "and here is the rest of the story"...in the next book I'm headed for now! Bye!

I enjoyed this story. It took a few chapters to discover who the lead characters really were but as the story progressed, I found the mystery unfolded with good pacing.

AA's characters were varied and I liked the way she rounded them out as the story developed. I particularly like the character development of Amy who seemed to mature through the turmoil.

More a mystery than a thriller. There were moments of suspense but for the most part, it was a sleuth type investigative story that was engaging with a satisfactory resolution.

Loaded with a large cast of diverse characters, it took a while to introduce the players – interesting but slow to start. The action was not fast-paced, but enough to keep my interest going. The blurb indicated lots of surprises, but most of the plot was predictable. The climax was thrilling and satisfying, and it felt like it worked its way to a good ending. But it did not stop. The final chapters droned on to fill in all the gaps and make sure everyone had a “happy-ever-after” story. Perhaps not necessary, but it didn’t’ hurt. I enjoyed the book and never felt I had to put it down.

And I like how this one caught my attention and held it. Not your usual plot and with enough twists to keep a reader guessing. Well written solid read.

One of the things I found most interesting about this book was that it was told from multiple points of view but not from the main character's. Initially, I found this off-putting, but as the story went on, it did pull me in, as I tried to put together all the various pieces each character had to the mystery. Having so many POV characters (there were a LOT) is challenging to write well and I think the author did a nice job.

I'd read more by this author :)

An intense, engaging thriller that flows easily across multiple POVs. What at first seems to start as a cozy mystery ramps up in intensity when Amy learns that her roommate has gotten involved in some thing she would’ve been smart to avoid. Things get worse for Amy when she learns that Kat used her name to do it. Desperate to save Kat and herself, Amy is whisked on a race against the clock.

The beginning of the story from the end was very easy to read. The characters were realistic, and I especially loved the back and forths between Kat and Amy. Both of them felt like real people. I didn’t care for Ross at much, but his character was very well developed too. Since we spend time inside each character’s head at least once in the story, it is easy to understand all of their motives.

I enjoyed this thriller from start to finish.

Not a real thriller but a decent read. I probably would not buy another book in this series but would take the time to read if free! Rather ho-hum!

This is not the kind of book you can read in short bursts. There's a lot going on and since it is so complex you will be more likely to miss important details unless you give it your undivided attention like I did. I found this to be very intriguing and suspenseful. This went in a direction I didn't see coming and you won't either. I totally enjoyed this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great storyline and intriguing characters!

The Bride’s Trail is an exciting first book in a thriller series by A.A. Abbott.
A vast array of characters are all cleverly linked together to create a tale of mystery and violence, with some raunchy moments thrown in for good measure.
Amy shares a minuscule flat in Fitzrovia with the glamorous Kat. Little does Amy know she is sharing more than just their postage-stamp floor space. Kat has used Amy’s identity in a sham marriage, and now Amy must find her unscrupulous flat mate before other underworld figures catch up with the dazzling blonde.
With plenty of twists and turns, I found it hard to put the book down. Looking forward to reading more by this author!

This was a pretty great story though the first few chapters were confusing as I couldn’t figure out where everyone fit in. By the end it made sense. Give it a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars "I'VE WAITED ALL MY LIFE FOR THIS..."
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 1, 2021
The runners and riders are an assortment of well-drawn characters from modern British life, all instantly recognisable, like Hogarth's famous drawings were.

A brace of young women starting out on the man and career trail – one knowing, crafty and glamorous, one hopeful but as yet unfulfilled; two young dudes – one a steely, success-driven ice cube, one a caring character on a humanitarian mission; a clutch of variously parental and city whizz types at the top of the career tree, or in the second flush of romance; and a brace of well-dodgy, doped up and dangerous crims.

Add two throbbing cities, speakeasy London – where “they all wear masks” – and underground Birmingham, babs.

The Bride’s Trail sets off like an Epsom Derby Day sprint, hurtling forwards in a blur of action. A strong story arc evolves based on nothing being what it seems, with well-plotted links and surprises as the action progresses.

While the read is story-led and the writing tight, there are still some nice flourishes to savour: “A stray sunray caught Cari’s short red hair, appearing to set it on fire. Coupled with her thin frame and cream linen dress, the effect was of a flaming match, or stick of dynamite about to blow.”

And some amusing strokes, too: “You’ve got quite a bush.” The story is even a tale of two very different bushes.

All-in-all a great read. As this was the third of AA Abbot’s books I’ve read, I suppose I am now a fan. I will read more by this author.

Told from multiple viewpoints, it was reminiscent of a Richard Curtis film – like Love Actually but more crime-com than rom-com, and with much closer connections between vignettes/chapters and characters.

Amy works in the city in an admin job arranged by Deidre, the girlfriend of her father, Charles. Unbeknown to Amy, Charles has been called in to carry out an IT audit of the firm.

Amy’s flatmate in Fitzrovia is Kaz who works as a croupier. Kaz has a side-line being the bride in scam marriages arranged by up-and-coming criminal, Jeb.

More established criminal, Shaun, uses Jeb as his enforcer. When he opens an illegal casino, he employs Jeb and Kaz, unaware of the marriage scam. He’s in love with Kaz and wants to please her by stocking her favourite vodka in the bar. He contacts the main supplier, Marty, in Birmingham.

Marty is mentor to a science researcher called, Erik, who has a connection to Kaz.

Ross, a casino punter, also takes a shine to Kaz. Ross works in the same City firm as Amy and may be implicated in an IT fraud that Charles uncovers.

When some of Shaun’s ill-gotten gains go missing, Kaz disappears. Amy, Shaun, Jeb and Ross try to track her down and find all leads point to Marty and Erik in Birmingham.

Yes, it’s a complex plot with lots of interconnecting subplots. Nevertheless, it is an easy read. The reader is in safe hands with this accomplished writer and never feels lost. The writing is smooth to the point of invisibility such that there’s not a single flowery sentence to trip on.  This leaves the reader free to enjoy the adventure.

And the best thing about this exuberant and fast-paced book is that it’s the first in a series of Trail titles. I look forward to meeting this great cast of characters in book two very soon.

I enjoyed reading The Bride's Trail by the talented author AA Abbott.
Amy only wanted to enjoy life, enjoy her job, and a guy to love if she ever found the time for one in her hectic life. She also would prefer her parents to be back together and not watch her father go through his midlife crises.
When a man with a knife comes knocking her world is turned upside down. First her roommate goes missing, and then she discovers her name has been used in a marriage fraud.
Can she find her friend in time, or will Amy and her work colleague become another victim.
