A curse that lasted 900 years, a legend that lasted forever.

From the Iron Age of Ireland to the dawn of Christianity, this epic retelling traverses the realms of magic and sorcery. From the fort of Fionnachaidh to the watery wastes of Sruth na Maoile, it tells of the downfall of an ancient race and the children caught in its wake.

Grieving for the loss of his wife, King Lir marries her younger sister, Aoife. Jealous of her husband’s children she calls on the power of the Aos Sí and their Phantom Queen, making a bargain that will cost her life.

The children, turned to swans, are cast out upon the waves in an adventure that sees empires rise and fall as centuries pass. Eventually, they must choose between the world they once knew and a future they do not understand.

Take the fuzzy legends of outsized heroes, impossible magic, and incestuous couplings. Turn it into a recognizable labyrinth of family tribes struggling to find their place in the world and make their days as joyous as possible. No small order!
As a consumer of Celtic tales, I appreciated MGW's bringing those ancient heroes down to human scale and making their motivations clear. I loved her deft use of Gaelic language and simple palette of symbols that unlock a lot of the emotion of the characters for the reader. The gods, magic, time itself seem to be characters here, and I loved being wrapped up in the fabric of ancient Eire and whirled through the highs and lows of the children's youth, then peeking in as history skated past them. They were enchanted; so was I.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartbreakingly Beautiful

Moving. Heartbreaking. Profound. Bittersweet. Only a few words I can think of after having just finished this book.

A brilliant retelling of a classic tale which also breathes new life into the legend of the Children of Lir. The children and their kin felt more like real people than just characters in a fairytale, their heartbreak and sorrow was mine for as long as I read the words between these pages. I myself cried multiple times throughout.

If you know the legend then this is a definite must. If you aren’t familiar this is still a tale worth discovering.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful re-telling of an ancient Irish myth by a young, contemporary writer.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 10, 2019
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and didn’t want it to end. It’s such an enchanting, sensuous and sometimes bawdy blend of mythology, history, fantasy and gritty reality, and the writing is elegant and atmospheric.

The many characters unfold and are peeled away until we are left with our four beautiful protagonists, the children of Lir (an ancient king of Ireland) transformed into swans but still thinking and feeling as humans. Marion is a master story teller, the research, attention to detail and beautiful prose make it a very satisfying and rewarding read.
