i love romance books. i do. my biggest gripe with them is that people miscommunicate often and it drags on forever. no one has adult communication skills.
while there are a lot of secrets and miscommunication in this as the two characters try to figure things out, i appreciate the fact that the idiocy doesn’t last like 3 chapters. it’s not perfect but at least one of the main characters forces the other to be honest about what’s going on within a reasonable time.
the characters and dialogue were engaging, the story was solid. if you liked the hating game you should def check this one out.

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ STEAM: 🔥🔥🔥 Gemma Charles has harbored deep-seated hate for co-worker Ben Tate since she started at the FMG law firm. It did not help that he steals her clients, favors another associate, and seems to antagonize her at every step. When one of the senior partners assigned her to a high-profile case, she knows it is the ticket to becoming a partner. Too bad Ben will have to work with her on said case. Elizabeth O'Roark is batting 1.000 for me. Her books always have such depth that starts with a simple premise and builds into a wonderfully layered story. The journey from beginning to end is about the readers -- and characters -- uncovering that there is more to the people involved than we assumed. She also gets readers so invested in her characters, and Gemma and Ben are no different. Gemma is the person you want in your corner. She is unapologetically ambitious and driven; she has no qualms about wanting to be the first female partner at FMG and is willing to work hard to get it. On the flip side, she is also kind and protective and follows her values and instincts...sometimes to a stubborn fault. Ben has officially made his way to my book boyfriend list. The seemingly cocky firm partner is every bit Gemma's equal. He goes toe-to-toe with her banter, creating a delicious tension from early on in the book. He also has serious depth to him, and it was so gratifying to uncover these clever little details along with Gemma. The spice between these two could light up a Kindle. I also enjoy a fantastic enemies-to-lovers buildup, and when the payoff is equally hot, it just makes the literary ride all that more fun. This is the third book in O'Roark's Devil series, but it can be read as a standalone. As someone who read the Book 2, it was fun to get updates from characters in previous books, but if you're new, it will not take away from the story at all.
