The Devil You Know: A Grumpy Boss Romance Kindle Edition
There’s a devil on my shoulder, and every Monday morning she announces herself. She’s this delicious flame in my chest, a flurry of whispered suggestions in my ear. Suggestions I ignore…because every single one of them is about Ben Tate.
Ben—Stealer of Clients, Evicter of Homeless Women, Nemesis. Sitting across from me every damn Monday with his lovely, smug smile and his too-perfect teeth, the living symbol of everything I hate.
It’s been my policy to avoid him, but when a case comes into the firm—one that could change his career and mine—I make an exception. It means weekends and evenings by his side. It means enduring his smirk and his smart mouth and never taking the bait.
Until the night Ben says “Beg"...and that devil on my shoulder decides to make a few demands of her own.

About the author

Elizabeth O'Roark has a bunch of degrees she does not use and gave up working as a medical writer to craft grumpy, alpha heroes and the flawed women who love them. When not writing, she likes to spend time with her three kids, who are now teenagers and wish she'd find a different way to spend time. She can be found on Facebook feverishly debating whether or not "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie and telling people to read "The Hating Game", which she did not write but wishes she had.

Gemma Charles has harbored deep-seated hate for co-worker Ben Tate since she started at the FMG law firm. It did not help that he steals her clients, favors another associate, and seems to antagonize her at every step. When one of the senior partners assigned her to a high-profile case, she knows it is the ticket to becoming a partner. Too bad Ben will have to work with her on said case.
Elizabeth O'Roark is batting 1.000 for me. Her books always have such depth that starts with a simple premise and builds into a wonderfully layered story. The journey from beginning to end is about the readers -- and characters -- uncovering that there is more to the people involved than we assumed.
She also gets readers so invested in her characters, and Gemma and Ben are no different. Gemma is the person you want in your corner. She is unapologetically ambitious and driven; she has no qualms about wanting to be the first female partner at FMG and is willing to work hard to get it. On the flip side, she is also kind and protective and follows her values and instincts...sometimes to a stubborn fault.
Ben has officially made his way to my book boyfriend list. The seemingly cocky firm partner is every bit Gemma's equal. He goes toe-to-toe with her banter, creating a delicious tension from early on in the book. He also has serious depth to him, and it was so gratifying to uncover these clever little details along with Gemma.
The spice between these two could light up a Kindle. I also enjoy a fantastic enemies-to-lovers buildup, and when the payoff is equally hot, it just makes the literary ride all that more fun.
This is the third book in O'Roark's Devil series, but it can be read as a standalone. As someone who read the Book 2, it was fun to get updates from characters in previous books, but if you're new, it will not take away from the story at all.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2022I am not sure how it is possible (since the previous two books were essentially perfect), but this series somehow keeps getting better and better! At this point, I am convinced that Elizabeth O'Roark can do no wrong, because every single time I read one of her stories, I immediately fall in love with the snarky, damaged, and complex characters that she creates.
I did not think anyone could beat Josh from "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" — who was the perfect blend of grumpy and protective when it came to his feelings for Drew — but Ben Tate has officially ascended to the top of the podium. He is not only smart, caring, driven, and smitten with Gemma from the moment he lays eyes on her in a courtroom, but he also always tries to put her needs first and shows patience with her insecurities. As for Gemma, she is a perfectly imperfect heroine who takes no prisoners, works twice as hard as everyone around her, and has such a big heart (especially for women who have been mistreated), so it's easy to see why Ben was infatuated with her right away. I loved reading about such a strong, ambitious, and intelligent female protagonist, and I admired Gemma's determination to challenge the "boys' club" at her firm.
Ben and Gemma were great characters on their own, but together? Wow, talk about explosive in the best way possible! Their chemistry was electric and palpable, to the extent that I could almost feel the intense passion and yearning between them as they tossed insults back and forth. I have said it several times before but I will gladly say it again: Elizabeth O'Roark is the queen of banter, and "The Devil You Know" has just cemented this fact, because so many of Ben and Gemma's jibes toward each other were hilarious and pure gold. It's clear from the beginning that Ben and Gemma's mutual verbal mistreatment is actually just a fun game between them, and in the latter character's case, it also serves as her way of pretending like she does not want him. This is probably one of the most fiery couples that O'Roark has ever written, and I am here for it! Now I am really looking forward to the next book about Graham and Keeley, who was such a cool side character (especially since I can relate to her love of junk food). These two seem like complete opposites, so I cannot wait to see what O'Roark has in mind for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love your sense of humour!
I loved this touching story which brought me lots of laughter (I peed in my pad at one point) and sadness where Kleenex were needed. I love your writing style and how much discrimination still exists in this world.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'd sell my soul for Ben Tate
I’ll be very honest, it took me a bit to remember where I’d heard the name Ben Tate before, but once it registered, everything just fell into place. But even if you’ve not read the previous two books in the series, this one works perfectly well as a standalone. And if you have read the first two, then you are going to love this one because my god it was so beautiful.
In The Devil You Know, Elizabeth O’Roark tackles a topic that is common and frustrating, but she does it pretty well. I feel like tons of readers will relate to this and understand the struggles of being a woman in a male-dominated workplace, because this book takes on harassment, misogyny and even the #MeToo movement, while at the same time weaving it into a gorgeous romance between the two leads that by the end of it you might feel slightly hungover. But in all the good ways, of course.
I have a thing for strong, bada** and powerful women taking men down one day at a time and O’Roark does that with all the books in this series. But I think Gemma’s level of sass, bada**ery and determination might just be my favourite. As a lawyer with a well established firm in LA, Gemma’s working towards making partner and being the only woman at that level. But there are more than enough obstacles standing in her way. Not just the man she considers her rival and archnemesis, but literally every man who is already a partner. But that doesn’t stop Gemma, no. She’s going to get that partner position no matter what it takes, even if it means staring her bosses in the face when things go completely wrong. But on the other side, Gemma’s history with her parents divorce and her obsession with Hallmark movies shows you how determined she is to not just stand to the side and let everyone else do the work. She was the perfect balance of every heroine I’ve read and I think that’s what really drew me to her.
And then there’s Ben Tate. I was a little disappointed that we didn’t get his POV, because after we got Josh’s side in The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea, I figured we’d see more male perspective. However, the story still flows and works perfectly without it. So I’m not complaining, just…observing, I guess? Anyway, Ben. I loved that there was so much more to Ben than meets the eye, and we learned about him and discovered things about him as Gemma does and that lended to that mystery about him right from the start. I liked that even through Gemma’s eyes, he comes across as slightly complex and he’s got a lot going for him that we don’t get to know all at once. Which was strangely endearing.
Their relationship is hot. Not just the steam (which is fantastic), but the chemistry. As rivals competing for the partnership position, Gemma and Ben are constantly going to head to head on cases and different things. And that banter, that back and forth, the tension and the burning lust and desire really amps everything up. Honestly, I could spend forever just writing a review about the banter, because it was fantastic. It was snappy, cutting, funny and entertaining. It gave such insight into these characters too and that was probably one of my favourite things about it.
I didn’t want this book to end, so I tried to drag it out, but at the same time, it was just so brilliant, it was hard to put down! Elizabeth O’Roark has done it again and I am absolutely and completely in love with her writing, her mind and I cannot wait to see what comes next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellente romance de bureau !
Son but ultime ?

I was going to say Ben is my fave in this book series so far but then i remembered Hayes and the I remembered Josh and how they both were in their books so I can’t choose now. But I love these books so far and love this writer.
