The Diamond Courier: Sequel to In Picardy's Fields (The Resistance Girl Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,215 ratings

A gripping WWII historical fiction novel about courage, resistance, and a young woman who risks everything behind enemy lines.

England, 1942

As war threatens all of Europe, Lili Hamilton refuses to be confined by society’s expectations. The daughter of a WWI heroine, she craves a cause worth fighting for—and finds it in London’s communist circles, where whispers of resistance and revolution echo through the streets.

When she’s recruited by the enigmatic Leo Oppenheim for a covert mission to Antwerp, Lili steps into the shadows of Nazi-occupied Belgium as a diamond courier. Her task is dangerous. Her loyalties, uncertain.

As she navigates the tensions of the Jewish quarter, forms a deep bond with the Goldmunz family, and crosses paths with the charming yet brutal Gestapo leader Ulrich Lemberg, Lili is drawn into a world where every move could be her last.

Inspired by true wartime operations, The Diamond Courier is a story of courage, conviction, and the high cost of resistance. With echoes of The Nightingale and The Rose Code, this standalone installment in The Resistance Girl Series blends espionage, emotional suspense, and a clean romantic arc into one unforgettable novel.

Reviewer quote I especially like the emerging role of women in the military and in the medical field. Nobody escaped being caught up in the ugliness and cruelty of such a horrible period in Europe's history. Takes you deep behind the mists of time and politics that obscured the horrors and struggles endured during German occupation. Provides an accurate historical background, but is also an emotional and engaging story of human drama, patriotism, action.
Can't miss scene “I’m going to the front, Papa, I need to save lives.” “Because of you I became a doctor, a freedom fighter, a lover.” “I know who betrayed my family, and he’s a dead man” More shots rang out, ricocheting on the Benz’s armored chassis.

"Hannah Byrons Resistance Girl series is outstanding! The Diamond Courier is packed with adventures and hardships and will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end!"
Reader Review

"Byron gives us a superb plot, relatable characters and exquisite writing. I felt I was in the settings and could see and hear the people around me. Recommended for readers of WWII fiction."
Reader Review

"I usually avoid historical novels, the authors tend to write in stilted language, trying to portray the time period they're writing about by aping the style, which often gets in the way of the story. Hannah Byron manages to authentically capture the time, in every detail, but without you ever losing the sense that you are reading about real people that you could meet today."

Thank you Hannah Byron for creating this treasured chronicle of these hidden gems of history! So well crafted and such a little known slice of WWII that sparkles like diamonds in the rough!

This story illustrates the many facets of war. The history of the conflicts across the Continent illustrate how WWII affected the different regions, cultures, and the personal conflicts that each person had to confront and resolve. I knew so little about the actual diamond trade! Sharing this history through Issac and Chaim's operation enlightens the reader to more than the age old story that "Jews put their money in jewels so they could take their fortunes wherever they went".

Also, the enlightenment of the roots of Communism and it's spread across the Continent during the conflict of the political doctries of Fascism and Democracy illustrates just how easily it takes hold of those facing personal hardships earning an adequate livelihood to support their families. A good education for American readers, business leaders, and real educators!

Tying WWI history to WWII through the family chronicles and memoirs of two generations is a perfect example of how war itself may solve an initial conflict but can create another conflict
through the disregard of personal hardships. This disillusionment usually creates a vacuum from which another ideology seems to solve all ills in society!

If this story had been a chapter in a history book, its significance would have been another "lesson lost"!

Thank you Hannah Byron for another job well done!

I actually read this book out of sequence, and with the exception of Lili’s stay at the Swiss finishing school, the main character’s story was quite different. There were unexpected turns in plot, initially with her being tasked with smuggling diamonds, but the consequences of her actions after events during her return to Antwerp to Isaac and Elizabeth Oppenheimer.

A broken engagement by the bride to be....at her engagement party is the jumping off point for this incredible work of historical fiction. Lili knows in her heart that marriage is not right for her right now. From here she embarks on a life changing journey. In spite of her family owning the mine that allows her to enjoy a luxurious life she has, Lili is drawn to the communist party. To make matters more interesting she also falls in love with the charismatic leader. Both of these decisions lead Lili to defy her parents and jeopardize not only their livelihood but also her life.
Follow Lili’s path as a journalist for a communist newspaper and eventually a diamond courier. Along the way she finds not only her strength but also that of those that love her.
Set against the backdrop of WWII Lili’s story will break your heart and slowly put out back together again.
Give yourself the gift of The Diamond Courier and realize just how golden Lili’s story is.

This beautifully written book is a rich tapestry about war, communism, bravery, love and sadness. Lili is a strong, endearing character that you can't help but to admire and love. There was a twist that I didn't see coming but the ending made up for the heart in the throat moments. Iain is also a wonderful character and I have a new book crush! I highly recommend this historical fiction story with a pinch of romance and a splash of suspense.

Just finished this very different book in the series. It is a brilliant depiction of how war effects different people in different ways. It is great love story that I normally wouldn’t read but cleverly interwoven with an amazing story of war time bravery, resistance, and amazing courage and sadness. During a time of great oppression by an evil regime comes the story of great turmoil, danger, amazing love and loyalty, among people who maybe would not normally react in the way they did. Can’t wait to read the next book in the cleverly interwoven series, I would recommend this book and Hannah Byron to anyone
