The Divide: Some things are best left buried. Kindle Edition

3.8 out of 5 stars 64 ratings

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a macabre horror story that will linger in the mind long after the final page. THE DIVIDE – Some things are best left buried. Five teenagers head into Dartmoor’s bleak National Park for a final adventure together before they all go their separate ways after the summer. These lifelong friends have no idea what terrible secrets this place holds. One by one they start to realise something is not quite right about this moor. Something is lurking there – some malevolent and ominously primeval force is buried deep beneath this ground waiting to emerge. The locals know the truth about what lies beneath this land but the five friends are met with a sinister silence everywhere they turn. Then the Divide is split in two. What is unleashed is hell itself and the friends know they need to find a way out before it’s too late. Lured into an ancient forest that appears on no maps, the friends’ fight for survival begins. But who is the little girl in the white dress? With her hideously disfigured face and transfixing voice, why has she suddenly taken a keen interest in these teenagers? The Divide is the chilling tale of five friends’ fight for survival against an evil beyond comprehension.

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.

In 2013 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.

3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor Cornwall series.

The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.

I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results. I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series and was published in July 2018.

After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brings together the brooding, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor. Dropzone followed shortly after and the third in the series, The Raven Girl finished things off.

Miranda is something totally different. What was to be a stand-alone psychological thriller, it is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before. The ending begged for a sequel and, Mistress was born. Medusa completes the Miranda trilogy.

There are now 25 DS Smith books available with many more planned for the future.

I wanted a break from the crime thriller genre so I came up with The Divide - a macabre horror tale of survival, but crime will always be my true love.

A new series featuring Irishman, DI Liam O'Reilly begins with Blood on the Island, and that was followed by ten more mysteries set on the island of Guernsey.

When I'm not writing I love sailing, guitars and jumping out of perfectly good planes. I'm lucky to have a huge lake on my doorstep as well as a world-class skydiving drop zone.

THE DIVIDE is eerie before anything even happens. Then horror struck, the question is to freeze to the chair or run. After a heart stopping tragedy, normal life resumes .... For awhile...
Heart racing, spine-tingling suspense and terrorizing, captivating mystery keeps THE DIVIDE riveting to the haunting, macabre finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloody brilliant

I have been a fan of Stewart's work for a little while now. I first discovered how flipping fantastic an author he is when I was invited to take part in the blog tour for one of his books. I haven't quite caught up with his back catalogue yet. I keep pace with his new releases and when I have a minute I try to catch up on a previous book. When I heard that he was due to bring a new book out, I just knew that I had to read it as soon as I could. 'The Divide' is a horror story, which is a departure from Stewart's usual crime novels. I am not normally a fan of horror stories but I thought that I would give it a whirl as I love Stewart's books. Oh blooming heck 'The Divide' was a fantastic read, which I thoroughly enjoyed but more about that in a bit.
I must admit that it took me no time at all to become addicted to 'The Divide'. As soon as I started to read that was it, I just knew that I wouldn't be able to put this book down. I couldn't bear to miss a single second of the story. The book wasn't exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I immersed myself so deeply into the story that I managed to cut out all other distractions and focus on the story. I must admit that every so often I felt like diving to hide behind a cushion after I had read something scary. 'The Divide' certainly isn't a book that you should read last thing at night before you go to bed, as it would be liable to cause some pretty weird and wonderful dreams! I am just a scaredy cat! I soon raced my way to the end of the book. This was one of those gripping, unputdownable reads that had me on the edge of my seat throughout (well when I wasn't hiding behind a cushion that is).
'The Divide' is superbly written but then I think that to be true of all of Stewart's books. He initially grabs your attention from an eye catching synopsis and then much like a fisherman reeling in a catch Stewart reels you in. Escape then becomes impossible- not that I would want to escape. I felt as though I was part of the story itself and that's thanks to Stewart's fabulously vivid and realistic storytelling.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'The Divide' and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I will be reading more of Stewart's work in the future, which knowing how quickly Stewart Giles writes will probably be some time next week! The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different and complex but strange ending

Like the other reviewers I'm a fan of Stewart Giles's detective novels and rate them all very highly - but this is a horror story, not my favourite genre. The plot is good but I'm not keen on the characters and I was quite confused by the ending. Just my opinion
