- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2021I simply ADORE Suki's writing. There is something so genuine in the way her characters view the world but mostly their special person. Tommy and Kim, like many of their characters come from a difficult background and yet there is still innocence and wonder to everything they share. Life might have tainted them in certain aspects but luckily not all.
In the year and a half they knew each other, Kim and Tommy became fast friends and nearly a bit more. But though Kim knew exactly what he was feeling towards Tommy, Tommy was still uncertain about his sexuality or willing to explore this side of him. They share one kiss on the night of their highschool's prom before Kim disappears from Tommy's world leaving both guys with a longing they can't shake.
This special kiss was Suki's gift to us this winter in her free "The First Boy HE Ever Kissed" which was available at the beginning of January through Prolific Works. But if you didn't manage to grab it back them, don't worry about it. It's still a part of this book. It's worth the read on it's own, I really enjoyed the glimpse before I started reading this one.
Getting back to Kim and Tommy's story.. Two years go by. Tommy has a steady job he is now leaving to pursue a bit of traveling. He is rather content in life even though his longing for the boy who got away never left. His last night on his job as a security guard they experience a break in and who he finds himself chasing? Kim.
I won't say more about what happens next, how Kim came to be there and what he was doing and why - not to spoiler anything. After all this isn't a very long novel (on the verge of being considered a novella). Let's just say seeing each other again rekindled everything they hoped they could have. But Tommy is scheduled to leave, he already has a plain ticket and Kim's life is a whole lot of mess. He might WANT to get out and ran into Tommy's arms but it's not that simple.
This book was as heartbreakingly beautiful as all of Suki's books are. I wasn't in the "best mood" while reading it. I was actually siting in a waiting room waiting for a probable surgery I didn't know I would be having just hours before. Nevertheless I was hooked from the first page. Maybe what made this book so perfect for that exact moment in time was the simplistic way Suki's characters tend to look at life and deal with life's worst situations. How could I NOT be optimistic about MY outcome when I could feel it in my bones these guys are going to have this WONDERFUL possibility to find both love and compassion and their own kind of Happily Ever After.
Grab it and read it. You won't regret it!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2021Author Suki Fleet delivers a beautiful happy ever after in her latest holiday story, The First Boy I Ever Kissed. Told with alternating points of view Tommy and Kim fill us in on the background of their first kiss and what has happened in the years since. While details tend to be a bit sketchy since this is a novella, we still get enough story here to understand both the danger Kim is in and the reasons he left Tommy behind. We get a less clear picture of what has been happening for Tommy in those intervening years but we do know that he has not had a relationship since that kiss—nor has he wanted one as he has in many ways been pining for Kim ever since.
There is just enough of a story here to make me want a longer novel about these two and how their time together began. If ever there was a good reason for evolving a shorter book into one that spanned more of the past then this one would be a contender. I find myself desperate to see how they grew up—Tommy being in foster care most of his life and Kim with a bipolar alcoholic mum. With the little bits of relationship clues the author does give us I find it only whet my appetite for more. One can argue that as novellas go this story is fairly complete and certainly very entertaining. There are some real nail biting moments for Kim in this story and that sparked a real desire to see these two young men get their happy ever after. I just greedily want more of their story.
If you are looking for a hard earned second chance at love with a virgin hero who loves a wounded and nearly broken boy then The First Boy I Ever Kissed is the story for you. Suki Fleet always gives a reader lots to chew on in her stories and they are most definitely beautifully romantic no matter how gritty they can be—this novella falls in line with those truths completely.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2021I don’t know how Suki Fleet manages to capture and dissect every feeling, no matter how minute, but they do and it’s absolute magic. Every time I read a book by them, I’m transfixed and in awe of their talent. The characters and experiences pour from the page and ensnare me so I feel as though I’m living alongside them. Better yet, their characters are always incredibly unique and raw- different from those who usually star in romances.
The First Boy I Ever Kissed had all that. Relatively short, this is a novella that doesn’t waste a minute or leave the reader wanting. I enjoyed both characters and loved their simple, pure connection in the face of a difficult world. The way the story moved between timelines provided a good glimpse of the backstory while explaining both characters’ current emotions. I also liked how the full story to Kim’s disappearance slowly came out. The unveiling kept me engaged start to finish, delivering some unexpected turns along the way. If you like to be moved by emotion and appreciate a talented wordsmith, I’d definitely recommend The First Boy I Ever Kissed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Second Chances.
I love books where people find their way back to each other. This book had me hooked from page one. I fell in love with both Tommy and Kim. There's some angst, but on the whole it's simply a sweet second chance story, which gives you a warm fuzzy feeling. It's very well written, and, packs in a lot of feeling and emotion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get to this goodness. Get to it now.
Get to this goodness. Get to it now.
I am a big fan of Suki Fleet's writing. And even in a novella of a few pages, she manages to show us a glimpse of love unrequited, the yearning for better times, the beauty of found family and how hope shines through even in the darkest of times.
A chance meeting leads to Tommy and Kim rehashing and rekindling the warmth of the love they shared and how they had spent all this time in anguish, wondering about the if's and maybe's. But as circumstance and harsh reality threaten to crumble away this second chance at love, the two fight for their love against all odds.
The author's writing is simply beautiful, like lyrics on the page and the way she writes about the emotion that is love is mesmerizing.
If you are in search of a short read that will captivate your readers' heart, look no further.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected Reunion
Tommy and Kim had not seen each other since their prom night and found themselves reunited two years later unexpectedly. Kim is in a bad situation that he doesn't know how to escape from and he's worried that Tommy could get hurt.
Young adult romance full of angst and drama. HEA . Great short read.
