4.6 out of 5 stars 18 ratings

A world on the brink of collapse, and only the fire mother can save it.

Eighteen-year-old Fia Aldridge was just an ordinary Londoner a few months ago. Now she’s trapped on another world, separated from the friends she was trying to save, with no idea if the angel she loves is alive or dead.

Held captive alongside her adversary, Lorn, Fia is acutely aware that every moment that passes is a moment Ohinyan doesn’t have. Only the fire mother can reignite Ohinyan’s dying sun, and Erebus, the ancient darkness that imprisoned them has no idea which of them it could be—only that he needs the fire mother.

Determined to escape Erebus, working with Lorn is the only way Fia can hope to return home. The fate of Ohinyan rests in their hands.

Find out what happens in the epic conclusion of the Daughter of the Phoenix series. A richly woven tale drawing on ancient myths and legends, bursting with adventure, elemental magic, angels, witches, shapeshifters and slow burn romance. Fans of Brigid Kemmerer, Laini Taylor and Sarah J Maas will devour this series.

    ◦ I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ◦

The story picks right where the second one ended. We begin with Fia who is still in captivity due to Erebus. She’s trapped with her worst two enemies – Erebus and Lorn and no one seems to be up to anything good. While she tries to find a way to escape, all she’s left with is a hope that the magical device build by Okwata still sends her messages to Alexander and everyone else around Ohinyan.

This time the story contains multiple pov’s from Fia’s side, Alexander and Lorn, and I found it really interesting the differences between the 3 of them, each one of them having different plans – Fia and Alexander to save the Ohinyan and Lorn to see everyone bowing to her after she rekindles the sun. We’re also learning together with Alexander about his new magical powers that not long ago awakened, its interesting to see how powerful he actually can be and what type of power he has.

At the beginning the book does have a slower pace because not many things are happening, since Fia and Lorn are trapped by Erebus, but the pace picks up after a couple of chapters and things start to roll on a faster pace especially after Lorn and Fia escape and together with Evina they’re on their way to the gate, but all around them danger is lurking and they don’t know who to actually trust.

Lorn is one of the most despicable characters in this book, and she for sure didn’t gain my sympathy. Till the end she didn’t showed mercy or any good feelings – seeing the pov from her side you get to know how evil she is and how heartless. Yes of course there’s past trauma on why she’s so messed up, but compared to Erebus she doesn’t want to be redeemed from her mistakes and to become a better person, but till the end she remains bitter and all she wants is destruction. What I liked about Lorn was, that she was a good teacher on teaching Fia how to access her magic, even tho the way she did it also was very questionable, because she used the worst methods, but that triggered Fia and we actually get to see how strong she is which makes Lorn question herself if she indeed is the Fire Mother.

I really wanted to see a pov from Erebus side, he really impressed me towards the end. Even if he was so despicable and did many questionable things, toward the end he redeemed himself and I was really impressed on his choices and how he had such a weak spot for Fia and always protected her – even tho he did kidnapped her and somehow tried to kiss her, but in the same time you get to understand him how affected he has been during this years and how lost he is – but with Fia’s help slowly he changes and his final decision was actually really beautiful.

Fia on the other hand has grown so much during the third book, if at the beginning she had a copping mechanism where she was counting her breaths this time she shows us how stronger she is and how much she improved. She became such a warrior and while still feels the need to count her breaths and hide into a corner, she doesn’t let the dark thoughts overcome her but fights against them. And what I loved the most is that she always put Lorn on her place in a blink of an eye without being scared that she might get hurt.

Another topic that the book touches is the LGBT there are many differences in the characters sexuality, for example Lorn doesn’t care if someone’s a male or female as long as there’s pleasure involved (lol). There are different characters who have relationships with the opposite sex which I found them really beautiful – one of the relationships that I’ve loved the most was the one between Maab and Ene, two male shapeshifters, their love was always portrayed so innocent, so pure and so loving.

As the other two books, the story doesn’t concentrates a lot on the romantic side of things but a lot on the fantasy, world building and the events in between. But you still get those tiny perfect romantic moments that are just at the right time. I’m sad to see the world of Ohinyan ending but this has been an incredible ride from the beginning to an end.

I really enjoyed the ending to this series! I do wish Fia and Alexander had been with each other for more of the series, but I did like how their time apart put more of a focus on the plot/world than their romance. I had some issues with the way the characters figured out the twist towards the end, as it was not really obvious at all but somehow all of the characters magically deduced it. Other than that, I loved the characters and the story, Erebus and Lorn were especially compelling, and I enjoyed the final read!

Note: I received an eARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review!

This book wrapped up so much for me. Fia's journey is over and I so wish we had more, but it ended so well. This world was so fun to step into that I'll likely re-read it soon! Get it today!

Full disclosure: received an ARC copy for an honest review. But I had already preordered it because I knew I wanted it.

    Speechless.

This last installment (hopefully more stories still come out of Ohinyan) of the Daughter of the Phoenix is everything a fantasy book should be. Action drama love. EVERYTHING.

The weight of the magic. (And of loss) It’s tangible force upon the the characters. The twisting of old legends into new. This series has been a real thrill ride since I heard the prequel as a podcast audio drama. (What a start by the way!)

I have to give more than the available five stars... so we will tack on some rekindled suns!

Hold on for the twist! Very very satisfied!

Cant wait for what the ridiculously talented Lady Vix comes up with next! (Please don’t leave us waiting long!)
