The Gifts of Solitude: A Short Guide to Surviving and Thriving in Isolation Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

Roz Savage knows all about self-isolation. The most prolific female ocean rower in history, she has rowed – solo – across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, spending over five hundred days and nights alone at sea, often many hundreds of miles from the nearest human being.

Roz offers her hard-won wisdom to all who are feeling lonely or afraid during times of solitude. Based on her own struggles and breakthroughs at sea, along with tales of other individuals who have sought out or researched the impacts of loneliness, this book gives simple, practical, often humorous coping strategies for dealing with fear, helplessness, disorientation and self-doubt. When you can’t change your circumstances, you have to change your perspective.

With an attitude of acceptance and curiosity, you can learn not only to survive aloneness, but to thrive in it. Solitude offers unparalleled opportunities for self-awareness, personal growth, and purpose-finding that will stand you in good stead, no matter what the future may hold.

In her mid-thirties, Roz Savage decided there was more to life than doing a job she didn't like to buy stuff she didn't need. So she quit her job, sold everything, and took to rowing across oceans.

Between 2005 and 2011 she became the first woman to row solo across three oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian. She rowed over 15,000 miles, took about 5 million oarstrokes, and spent 520 days of her life at sea in a 23-foot rowboat, becoming the most prolific female ocean rower in history.

Not bad for a 5-foot-4 woman in her mid-thirties who doesn't particularly like physical exercise. Or oceans.

Roz describes her trials and tribulations, and occasional triumphs, in her two books, Rowing the Atlantic (2009) and Stop Drifting, Start Rowing (2013). These are not so much adventures books, as tales of a woman getting outside her comfort zone to find out what life is really all about.

I have been a fan of this author's writing for a long time. I first read all about her adventures as the first woman to row solo across three oceans. Now, I am so happy she wrote this book about the gift of solitude. During these challenging times, it's so encouraging to read her reflections and to realize that we are in control of our reaction to what's happening. Instead of being completely stressed out about the situation, we could leverage it to better ourselves. I love that she was able to base her lessons on the similarities between the solitude we are experiencing during the health crisis and the solitude that she experienced during her voyages. Overall, an uplifting, thought-provoking, and engaging read. 5 stars!

Roz tells a beautiful story of how achieving great challenges is 99% about the self, and very little about the resources. She is humble and humorous in telling the story. Worth a read for some additional courage and inspiration.

Over hundreds of days traversing the world's oceans, alone, author Roz Savage chose the confinement and isolation required to achieve her mission – and arrived at her destination with a rich collection of skills that can serve all of us, in times of solitude and far beyond.

If you are looking to find peace and purpose during times that take you off the "normal" path, if you want to use solitude to build a healthy and loving relationship with yourself, and if you want to be inspired by people who have faced solitude and seen its gifts, this book is for you.

Roz Savage rowed the major oceans alone in a small rowboat. All the oceans. Alone. So if there's anyone who can write about how to survive isolation, she's the one. This is a perfect remedy for it even now that 2020 is gone.

Timely book! I am a solo wilderness explorer who spends long periods of time in the wilderness, by myself. Solitude is one of my most precious tools either for my art or my spiritual growth. Roz expresses beautifully the gifts one can receive when welcoming solitude in your life, engaging with it, embracing it and letting it teach you about the treasures that hides within it. For anyone who is looking for powerful and much needed insights in this time of transformation and uncertainty, this is a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solitude - Our Chrysalis of Transformation
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 10, 2020
This lovely new book by Roz Savage is both timely and timeless. It is a book that should speak into all our lives well beyond this current serious health situation. I have already ordered two more copies as gifts and would thoroughly recommend it to others .
I love the way she simply and honestly shares the struggles she faced and the many precious insights she gained from bravely stepping out of one boat and spending endless days alone on the ocean in what she calls her ‘chrysalis of transformation’. I love that phrase. I love butterflies. We often see them as a sign of hope and new life but we tend to focus far less on the pain, the struggle and the essential process of change that goes on within the chrysalis. As Roz says, getting out or being forced out of one’s comfort zone is bound to be uncomfortable!.
As a counsellor, I know that lots of us struggle with feelings of low self-esteem and negative voices within and suffer from fears and anxieties. This book is a very useful tool offering lots of practical suggestions. Each chapter offers questions to ponder that gently challenge and invite the reader to change and grow.
In seeking our ‘new normal’ we may not aspire to the amazing challenges Roz has embraced or the extreme isolation of some of those she interviews. But hopefully, through reading this book, we can capture something of that joy and ‘magic’ in our own experience of solitude.

5.0 out of 5 stars A practical, profound companion to these demanding, continuously temporary times.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 10, 2020
Courage = walking with fear. Or in this case, rowing with it. I can't imagine a more radical departure from my own comfort zone than rowing alone among 30 foot waves, for thousands of miles. It is literally beyond my imagination. So the perceptions and wisdom that derive from that courage and discipline deserve a particular and deep regard, and now Roz Savage has written it all down. This is both timely and forever advice. From the simplest and most urgent pointer "remember to breathe" to more complex concepts, every word of this is honed from lived experience, and has all the value of that. To be read in chunks and acted upon as suits the moment - an ideal companion to our strange, 'continuously temporary' Covid times. And I do love a book that matches my sofa... :)

5.0 out of 5 stars This book will help me survive and thrive in my Coronavirus solo self-isolation
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 18, 2020
I bought this book because I am in self-isolation alone and wanted to give myself some perspective. I also hoped for some tools to give me a bit of direction. I found both of these things in this excellent book.
I found it very quick and easy to read, with some fascinating human stories, laughs, a lot of deep insights, and brilliant ideas about how to approach and react to this random time.
I believe that I will emerge from the other side of this Coronavirus Cocoon into an improved world. With the help of this book I will have some new skills. See you all out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gift to quiet my overwrought, worrying mind!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 19, 2020
Aptly named, The Gifts of Solitude is a welcome gift, helping us navigate these challenging times of forced isolation. Roz shares her insights, not just for coping strategies, but for ways to find opportunities for happiness and growth that will serve us well beyond the current pandemic. The gentle tone of her writing mirrors the guidance she offers us to be kind to ourselves and to nurture our own inner voices with positivity and compassion. Her book is a gentle salve for the overwrought, worrying mind, whether taken all in one dose or in small daily doses. I'll be sending a copy to my mother!

5.0 out of 5 stars Timely and highly readable

My hat’s off to Roz Savage for producing such a timely and helpful book. There is no doubt that humans are social animals and many of us are experiencing difficulties during lock-down. Although this book is packed with ideas to help us through, it does not read like a self help manual. It is an easy and enjoyable read, offering well chosen quotes as well as interviews with others experienced in isolation. Highly recommended.
