The Half Wolf Kindle Edition
Quinn grew up feeling out of place in the small town he calls home. Yearning for something he can’t name, he’s always felt different but never known why.
Kellan is part of a nomadic shifter pack. When they set up camp in the woods near Quinn’s town, the humans are unwelcoming and suspicious of the newcomers. The moment Kellan catches sight—and scent—of Quinn, he knows Quinn is special. But for the first time in his life, Kellan can’t trust his instincts. Quinn is human, and Kellan is a wolf shifter, so how can they ever be mates?
Their bond is instant and exhilarating. It breaks Quinn’s heart to know their relationship can only be temporary. Love isn’t enough when pack law forbids shifters to mate with humans. Tension explodes between pack and humans, and when Quinn discovers a shocking truth about himself that changes everything, he fears he’ll have to choose between the only life he’s ever known and the man he loves.

Jay lives just outside Bristol in the West of England. He comes from a family of writers, but always used to believe that the gene for fiction writing had passed him by. He spent years only ever writing emails, articles, or website content.
One day, Jay decided to try and write a short story—just to see if he could—and found it rather addictive. He hasn't stopped writing since.
Jay writes contemporary romance about men who fall in love with other men. Jay has five books published by Dreamspinner Press, and he also self-publishes under the imprint Jaybird Press.
Jay is transgender and was formerly known as she/her.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2017I enjoyed The Half Wolf quite a bit. I know Jay had mentioned on Twitter it was a bit different than what he usually writes, but the voice and style were still his, even though the material was more paranormal than contemporary.
In this book, shifters are known entities, and typically nomadic. They travel in packs, interacting and working on the fringes of human settlements. Kellan's pack sets up camp near Quinn's village (I would say town, but it seems rather tiny in the story), and Quinn takes an immediate interest in the group. Their first interaction, down by the quarry, was kind of cute, especially as followed by their face-to-face conversation in Ruth's shop.
There are clues all along for how Quinn's story will play out, but he doesn't put everything together until it comes to a head. Just as he disregards information, the pack knows something is off, but their knowledge doesn't allow for certain possibilities, so they regard Quinn as a puzzle, or curiosity. Sometimes in books, the story is laid out so obviously that you don't understand how the MCs can just ignore all of the glaring details. Here, it's all very subtle, and while all the bits and pieces together would make a single truth, there are enough individual gaps in knowledge (or awareness) that it's entirely possible, even likely, that all of the characters would behave or react as they did.
I'm looking forward to reading it again! It gets a little frustrating reading shifter romances where it's all alpha/omega/mpreg/dominance. This book is definitely not, and it was a pleasure. I don't know if Jay was planning to create a series to follow this book, but I kind of hope he does. :) We get enough world-building to allow for any number of things, if he chooses to continue.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2020I really liked this shifter story. The character development was very good. I liked both Kellan & Quinn. I kind of guessed Quinn’s issue but still found the build up enjoyable. I wished we had more background story for the Omega and I definitely wanted to know more about Joel. It would be great if he got his own story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2018I have been keeping my eye on this story for a while now and I do love me some shifter romance. When I decided to buy it (using an Amazon credit), I knew I had to read it right away, otherwise it was going to collect dust, lol. And I am so glad I jumped right in. This was a very nice story with characters I liked and wanted to see happy. Quinn and Kellan have an instant connection, and for Kellan - since his is a shifter - knows that his feelings towards Quinn aren't simply lust but something a whole lot more. For Quinn, he doesn't know why he feels so strongly toward Kellan, but he isn't going to fight it. Now, I knew where this story was going between Quinn and Kellan from the start. [As soon as I read that Quinn had to take his "medicine" I knew he was a shifter and his aunt was hiding the fact thru special meds to suppress his wolf. (hide spoiler)] Knowing this "spoiler" didn't detract from my enjoyment of all that came, but I did give them the stink eye since it took them so long to figure it out.
I really rate this story with 3.5 stars because there are few things left hanging that I didn't felt were clearly answered. First, there is a rouge Omega who just happens to show up at the same time Kellan's pack arrives.
Question #1: Why now? Why did the rogue Omega decide to harass the town now that Kellan's pack arrived? This was very weird to me and it's not answered. Was the Omega following them? Was he already in the area?
Question #2: Who was this rogue Omega? There is no on-page information given as to who this person was, where they came from or why the were there in the first place. Aren't they worried there could be more?
Question #3: Why wasn't Kellan's pack worried or more interested in finding the rogue Omega? Yes, the sent out "search parties" but they would find his scent and loose him to the water. I was screaming at them (mentally) to run up and down the stream to find the scent; the Omega came out of the water somewhere. They should have sent a larger group of wolves to track this rogue Omega, and they could have found him sooner. To me, the Omega wasn't just a risk to livestock, but could at any moment turn on the humans in town, AND on the wolf pack. I didn't feel the pack had an extreme sense of urgency about this. I would have been ALL OVER this thing. Like hell I would suffer blame for someone else. (The townspeople of course believed the wolf pack to be responsible for all the livestock killings.)
Question #4: [this medication that Quinn was on the suppress his wolf - what is the deal with that? He didn't suffer from any side effect? Really? And how did it work? Could this not be something the government would want to use to force wolves from shifting? They were ALL very blasé about the medicine Quinn was taking. It didn't even really seem to ping for them that this medicine could be bad for the wolves. (hide spoiler)]
Overall I enjoyed this story and loved Quinn and Kellan's relationship. Yep, it's an insta-love thing, but it's also a wolf thing - so whatev. :) I really, really loved the epilogue and enjoyed seeing the humans and shifters become friends and be together in harmony. They don't quite sing Kumbaya, but it's close.
I do recommend, just note my questions above. Also, there were some editing errors that should have been caught in the review process. There were words missing from sentences and it did pull me out of the story a few times because I had to figure out how the sentence should really read. Like I said, 3.5ish stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2017Great story, strong character development. I had a little trouble adjusting to Jay's take on Omega wolves which doesn't match the pervasive approach to Omegas in most M/M shifter stories. And as soon as Quinn's aunt mentioned meds I could see what was coming. That actually worked well in this case, I didn't mind being clued in before Quinn and Kellan.
A solid story, enough internal monologue from the MCs to understand them but not so much to slow down the story. Plenty of suspense as well as a sweet love story and a perfect HEA. I'd be glad to see more shifter stories from Jay Northcote. I'm a big fan and he is on my must buy list.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2017I've loved everything I've read by Jay, and this was no exception!
From the small town feel, to the characters of Quinn and Kellan and the mystery surrounding Quinn and great secondary characters, it made for a well rounded, fantastic story that held mystery and suspense. Add to that the bond shared between Quinn and Kellan, and their evolving story, and it was one great read.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shapeshifters and Love
I love it. Of course I love the way Jay Northcote writes and of course I wasn’t disappointed by reading it. I like a lot stories that involves shifters, werewolves or vampires and especially with male/male couples and this book is really really great.
The story line is well structured, I never get bored and couldn’t put it down easily and wait the next day to finish it. But it was worth it. I love a nice and romantic HEA and this one is very very cute.
The most important thing that I like about it is that, apart from the fact that the main characters Quinn and Kellan bond instantly, being shifters and magic is involved, I seriously love that during the course of the book I had the chance to read about the growing relationship, growing trust and of course the growing of their love. Definitely 5 stars for me! Worth it all!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy with More Than a Little Realism (and That's Not a Bad Thing)
I adored the characters, the plot and the lore. Even the predictability was not an issue. The title is a pretty good indication of where this was going.
There is a degree of transferability in this writing. I couldn't escape into it like I usually can. All I could see while I was reading was the realism (take out shifter add whichever minority you like). It's super clever in a way. And there is some phycology I didn't want to think too hard about in there too.
The writing made everyone human. It makes it so easy to see all the perspectives. Props to Jay for that alone, it's so easy to create good guys and bad guys and let the reader figure them out. This book doesn't give you that option. It forces your empathy. That really is a skill for an author.
What frustrated me was the lack of skill in writing intimate scenes, it is a learned skill. One that be dealt with over time.
I would recommend this to fans of the genre and those wanting to stretch their empathic muscles.
