The Human Relief Project: When The World Stops Working (A Novel) Kindle Edition

4.9 out of 5 stars 27 ratings

What would you miss in a world without work?

In 2038, the Human Relief Project is on a mission to eradicate labor, using AI to ‘free’ humanity from work. Bert, after years of struggle, has finally found his calling as a conductor for the Project. Yet as he moves from one relief facility to the next, his newfound sense of purpose is increasingly challenged by the disruption his work brings to those he ‘relieves’. Beyond his work, Bert's personal life becomes a microcosm of the conflicts shaping society – a partner who never tires of questioning his work, a mother struggling to find joy in her post-relief life, and family and friends deeply divided over the Project’s mission.

Meanwhile, Alex, the Project's newly appointed leader, faces fierce opposition as she pushes toward a workless future few can truly grasp. With the support of Hive, the Project’s central AI, she methodically removes one obstacle after another – stubborn politicians, greedy governments, and a skeptical public that doesn’t always share her conviction in the beauty of a world without work.

As the world nears total relief, a series of events, from the global stage all the way to Bert’s childhood home, push Bert and Alex into a shared crisis that tests their beliefs about humanity’s future in a post-work era.

Set in a meticulously crafted near-future shaped by AI, The Human Relief Project challenges our understanding of purpose, identity, and humanity itself, and ultimately asks: In a world without work, what makes us human? And who gets to decide that?

Sci-Fi to boost your critical thinking. My favorite!
If you appreciate hand-made goods, and enjoy aspects of life with a human story behind, this novel will hit a core for you. And if you enjoy contemporary Sci-Fi, add this one to your queue. I enjoyed reading and exploring what a near future could *feel* like. I am sure many of us have wondered ‘what will happen to me if this Artificial Intelligence revolution makes my profession obsolete?’. I loved how the novel guided me through a journey of exploration of those heavy ‘what ifs’ in a light hearted and deeply human way. There are many leitmotifs of relevant interest for me: AI ethics, Labor, Work-Life balance, Biopolitics, Post-humanism, Climate Change, among others. My favorite by far, is the trope of critical thinking. You can connect with different characters through this basic life skill. This book will allow you to exercise your critical thinking muscle at a time when it is such a scarce and heavily necessary skill for humans as we enter the late Anthropocene.

This incredible science fiction novel can explore a complex and profound theme like the “meaning of life”, all within a fascinating and entertaining framework of imagination, with dazzling visual elements. The tension between human free will and the rise of AI is a central theme, questioning whether AI can replace humans in decision-making or if we are needed to bring ethics and responsibility into play. Furthermore, it raises the crucial question of what the role of humans will be in this new context and what space will remain for human ability to create, an essential aspect of our identity that machines cannot replicate.

Throughout the story, the author masterfully weaves every detail, creating a domino effect in each scene, as if it were a meticulously crafted work of art where everything fits seamlessly. Excelling in world-building, the author presents thrilling supersonic travel scenes alongside vivid descriptions of futuristic settings. The novel skillfully blends philosophical and technological themes, exploring how AI reshapes society while maintaining our basic emotional needs for connection and belonging. It's a thought-provoking work for those interested in the intersection of technology and human responsibility. Highly recommended!

A captivating book colliding technology, AI, and human society - Max creates a world that feels exploratory and futuristic while also being relatable to modern day societal problems. This novel made me think about how the universe shapes with technology and what it really means to be a human.

What a fun and insightful read! The book offers a holistic perspective on what the world might look like if AI took over all jobs.

What I liked most is how the author explores this “what-if” scenario in a way that’s both creative and surprisingly realistic. It had me reflecting—and debating—topics like AI and the future of education, politics, power, and fulfillment.

I think it’s a perfect pick for a book club since it can spark so many interesting conversations.

Loved the characters, the story, but mostly the world they live in. A bit black-mirror-y—fun and smart.

    Highly, highly recommend it!

The book follows Bert and Alex as they navigate a world where AI is in the process of taking over all human jobs, making work obsolete.

What stood out to me was how detailed the characters were. The book explores their past and how it impacts their beliefs and the choices they make. The personal journeys of Bert and Alex (as well as the side characters) definitely made me reflect on how my own identity is connected to my work and what gives me joy and purpose.

I also appreciated how thoroughly the author built this future world. From the daily lives of people involved in the Human Relief Project (and those impacted by it) to the ripple effects on policy and how governments got involved, the level of detail was immersive. The story spans over two decades, offering insights and excerpts from different points in time and different perspectives, so I felt that as a reader I was connecting the dots as I was understanding the context the characters are in, which is a very fun experience.

In the last third of the book, the pace picks up with many events unfolding quickly, which kept me turning pages. After I finished the book, I kept thinking about how our world might look in 30 years, and it got my own thoughts and imagination running. If you're interested in exploring the human side of technological change and enjoy stories that make you think about the future, I'd definitely recommend this book.

I enjoyed the story overall, especially how it provoked self-reflection on questions about work, life, „freetime“ and which role AI could play in the future. Furthermore, it connected to situations in political affairs that I could easily relate to, to our generation of global citizens and personal struggles of the main characters. A very good and refreshing read!

I've read this book at a defining moment in my life, where a burn out forcefully relieved me from work. Although it's not AI that offers the abundance and bliss for me, the book did make me think more about what it is that gives my life meaning outside work.
Max has a pleasant writing style that gradually takes you on the journey from close to present time to 2060, where the story lines pick up the pace in the same speed as the singularity. If like myself you feel in the mid section that it becomes repetitive on its message of the mission, know that this is part of the HRP messaging and will pass soon! Keep going!
Thanks Max for reminding us that we don't have to wait for an AI to relieve us from work before pursuing our inner calling.
