5-Star - Mary Deal has recreated this world beautifully in her novel, in the tradition of Christian Jacq's The Mysteries of Osiris, only this time, readers are treated to great cunning in the plot and twists they won't see coming. The Ka is fast-paced, intense and sophisticated, and the author shows a great skill in character development. Mary Deal creates awesome moments of suspense, holding the reader's attention throughout the story. This is a book that can only be described with superlatives, a story that makes the past come alive, thanks to a masterful storytelling skill. Loaded with mystery, The Ka by Mary Deal is a fascinating story that involves magic, a timeless love, and archaeology, a well-plotted novel with strong characters. As a fan of Egyptology, I felt excited by the magical and mysterious setting, with the unexpected twists that punctuate the narrative. Well-researched, the story explores the concept of the afterlife, only it is curious that the afterlife is this life with characters that have been bound together by the power of magical spells embedded in ancient hieroglyphs. ~Reviewed By Arya Fomonyuy for Readers' Favorite

5-Star - Mary Deal's style is stunning, and has a story that's emotional and layered. The love story is a key part, romantic and emotional, as Aaron and Chione's relationship is a mirror to that of Tauret and Tut. History is brought to life in this stunning journey through the past. The Ka is breathtaking, finding the beauty and tragedy of the past, and the mysteries and magic of ancient Egypt. ~ Reviewed By Liz Konkel for Readers'Favorite

5-Star - I've been to Egypt, and I've seen, heard, and read some of the lore within this book. With great skill Mary Deal had me feeling like I was right back there, in the thick of it. The pace is slow and steady, but will easily keep you turning the pages. The Ka is heavily character driven with a plot that keeps you guessing; it has everything from tomb robbing to paranormal events. If you're a fan of Egyptian themed reads, or anything with a paranormal edge, then this is a read for you. The level of detail speaks volumes to the time and effort that went into researching this book to give the plot a genuine story, from the difficulties of financing a dig, to superstition, complications, unlikely friendships, and of course what Egyptian tale is complete without mysteries, missing people, and death? ~ Reviewed By K.J. 5-Star - Mary Deal has presented the reader with clear visions of life and love in the courts of ancient Egypt through all the senses. It is a tangled web of archaeology, intrigue, love and magic woven throughout this book. The reader will lose track of time and surroundings as they are consumed by the captivating writing and absorbed into the lives of the main protagonists. A great read and I look forward to more works from Mary Deal!

The Ka is a book for all tastes. This beautifully craft novel contains history, science, mysticism, mystery, intrigue, humor and romance in a neat package which is not just entertaining but challenges your mind and your imagination. It tells of the joining of minds and bodies of two lovers in an ancient world with two lovers in a modern world. Mary Deal has created word images so vivid that it is almost like watching a movie. She takes you for a romp through ancient Egyptian history as an archaeological team finds and opens the tomb of King Tut's commoner "wife," the love of his life. An archaeological student has the mystical ability to communicate with the ancient Egyptians, who are frustrated by lack of an heir and want their story told. This keeps the story alive and moves it along at a rapid, breathtaking pace. The final impact of this mystical relationship is left for the very last sentence of the book. The Ka is a delight to read. Once started, it is difficult to put down until the last page is turned. One can only hope that, from a writer of this talent, there will be many more books to come.

From the Author

I woke from a dream wherein I saw vivid scenes from Ancient Egypt. I saw costumes and half-naked adults and children going about their days. When I woke - about 2:00 in the a.m., I lay stunned and visualized those images again. Not till I woke a second time with a fixed image in my mind, like a still photograph, did I realize I had the ending of a story. Running to my computer in the middle of the night was common place, but not sitting there for five hours straight, in my pajamas. I managed to write out or make notes about everything I had seen. By the time I finished, I knew I had the makings of a huge story.
I proceeded to spend the next four years researching the entire 3500 years of Egyptian Dynasties searching for a time period in which to weave the threads of my plot. While researching, I managed to write and publish my first book and complete a manuscript for a second. However, once I began to write this Egyptian story, I spent another four years solely perfecting the manuscript that you and I have come to know as
The Ka.
You, as well as Ancient Egypt scholars, should find that all of the information about Ancient Egypt, how to locate a tomb, retrieve and preserve its contents, and life at a dig site are all real and true to fact. But through it all, I weave my mysterious threads of fantasy to bring ancient life into the present.

Not a sci-fi guy’s book, but it kept me reading. Lots of 18th Dynasty history and some reasonable political activity, plus a fair amount of woo-woo psychic stuff and a lot of straight-up romance.

With a little bit of history, a little bit of mysticism, and a lot of paranormal events, The Ka by Mary Deal is a great book for anyone interested in the Egyptian pyramids, tombs, Tutankhamon and more. The main character, California archaeology student Chione Ini-Herit is beginning to have vivid dreams about a special tomb. She travels to Egypt to explore more about these dreams, along with an archeology team, and comes face to face with the Valley of the Queens. She has no way of knowing she will soon be transported to ancient Egypt, along with her ex boyfriend. With well developed characters, a keen sense of history, and a fast moving plot, this is an exciting book especially for history buffs. While some of the detail may drag in places, the emphasis on the paranormal and exceptional depiction of visions and the mystical, makes this book a formidable entry into the paranormal/history genre. An interesting story that would fully support a sequel to see what the characters are up to next.

This action packed story about an archeology student named Chione was interesting to read. Especially with the recent discovery of a new hidden chamber in one of the pyramids, this story becomes almost fiction. Almost, if not for the time travel part. Chione is compelled to travel to the valley of the queens in Egypt after she starts having recurring dreams about an undiscovered tomb. Together with the founder of her Institute and her archeologist ex-boyfriend Aaron, Chione discovers that her dreams about this tomb may not have been just happenstance. Transported back in time, Chione and Aaron have to figure out a way to return to their own time and escape being used by Tauret for his own nefarious purpose.
An engaging story, it has been some time that an author has been able to grip and mystify me in such a fun and intriguing way. The story was original; it did not feel as if I was rehashing some other story with new characters. The writing was good and I did not find any major errors that jarred me out of the story.

I chose the rating because I feel the story dragged in many places. While the storyline was a good one, and paranormal is an acceptable style, there was perhaps too much delay in accomplishing the outcome. I liked the character development and felt most were believable, but still overdone at times. I would recommend this book to fans of paranormal books with intense detail. I also like the time period covered, but maybe remiss in my history, thus felt the detail dragged the story down.

A wonderful detailed story that took me back 45 years to the first time I read “The Sunbird” by Wilbur Smith. Both are stories that involve past and present lives that are entangled through time. Both tell of lives lived in ancient Egypt.
In “The Ka”, we see Chione having dreams and visions of a past life with Aaron, who are both on an archeological dig in Egypt. Or, are they memories and flashbacks to a life she lived and loved as Tauret who fell in love, and was loved back by Tutankhamen, the boy Pharaoh.
I loved the intricate detail of the excavations of the tombs which could only have occurred with meticulous research.
This is more than just a paranormal romance/thriller, it is a rich tale woven together beautifully by brilliant author Mary Deal, whose characters and descriptive narrative are the key to bringing the reader into the story.
Five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for a novel that lets the reader breathe in the story and exhale the dust from the ancient tombs.

Pyramid, Pharaohs, and Paranormal, the three Ps of this novel set in mysterious Egypt. Moreover, the writings are on the wall.

Chione has a gut feeling and dreams that lead her and a California archeologist team to the land of the Pharaohs to what is called a "Find," the business of digging up the graves of the ancient wealth. Each step of the way into "The Dig," she receives extrasensory perceptions and cryptids that lead to events that most may not believe.

Her friend/lover is also on the dig and shows up in what Chione perceives of two ancients' union. The ending of those relationships leaves the reader with the thought of what will come next.

During the dig, strange events happen which unravel. People die, go missing, and fall in love. What is learned from digging up graves? Nothing but much, the mystery behind a world that hasn't changed in centuries was nice to dabble into through Ms. Deals prose.

The detail in Ms. Deals writing is worth the read if you care about Egypt and Paranormal events. I found the read a pleasant diversion from my usual readings.

For anyone with an interest in Egypt, the pyramids, Pharoahs, magic et al. you will love this book. Its origins are primarily based around a love story that has stood the test of time and ancient magic that has lasted for centuries.
From the depth of information contained within this book, it is clear the author has thoroughly researched this subject. Not only did she painstakingly explain each aspect of an archeological dig, but also covered things that I had never even begun to think about. These surprises made me sit back and readdress what I thought I knew about this subject.
An enjoyable story that I think is well worth a read.
Highly recommended.

A well-written story that provides the reader with elements of suspense, fantasy, and adventure like a board game full of clues from beginning to end. The author well-researched the history of Egypt and the pyramids. I enjoyed this book immensely and look forward to reading more stories by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Immaculate story, conceived in the mysteries of the Pharaohs.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 25, 2019
This was a big step outside of my usually preferred genres, but I have read several of Mary Deal’s books, loved them, and so, trusted in the writer. I was not disappointed, although it took me a little while to ease into the slow-burning pace of a story of faith, trust and belief, so lovingly constructed.
This is a novel of mystery, magic and history, set bang up to date as an archaeological team go to Egypt to discover the tomb of a consort to Pharaoh Tutankhamon (that is how it is spelt in Ancient Egypt). It was a tomb considered lost forever, except one of the team had a dream. This starts the journey of a thousand layers that has running in the hidden depths a love story and, a woman’s desire for a child.
Enough – no more plot spoilers except to say the book is incredibly well researched, and here, we take a breather, because it could be possible to give up as the technicalities of ancient Egyptian culture and beliefs can at times confound. But, I say, stick with it because after a short while you are in it yourself, you are a part of the mysticism, glyphs, spells and ancient raptures.
The mystery and magic of the discovered tomb begins to effect all the members of the archaeological team in fascinating ways. There are deaths. There are murders. There are snake oil salesmen looking to take over the findings. But, in all of this, the mystery drives the narrative through the one woman, Chione and, Arron, her erstwhile love.
I am a slow reader and the pace of the novel was just right, because I did not want to miss the descriptions of ancient and modern Egypt. And the end? Sublime. Lovely. Moving. A Faith repaid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating from first to last

From the opening scenes in which a group of hot-tempered academics prepare to uncover a forgotten Egyptian tomb, The Ka draws its readers into a mystery centred in the ancient history of the pharaohs, one that pivots on mysticism and the paranormal. This is undoubtedly a potent mix.

Distinct and believable characters fumble and tumble their way through discovery and danger. The author clearly knows her subject, and provides a vivid and detailed portrait of the tombs and pyramids of ancient Egypt, along with the stories, the tragedies and cruelties, and the betrayals that went on. The historical exposition is cleverly woven into the narrative in the conversations among the party and in the mind of the protagonist, Chione.

The story maintains a good clip and is well-plotted with plenty of twists and surprises. The plot is driven by Chione, who endures many dreams and visions, at times clear, at others murky. Through Chione, Deal blends the present with the ancient, all the while imbuing the narrative with a looming sense of dread. Danger, is everywhere, as pervasive as the sweet odour that so enchants Chione.

Questions prevail, not least what is it between ex-lovers Chione and Aaron and will they re-unite? As the story unfolds the past and present collide in a dramatic way. Suddenly, ancient Egypt is a lived reality, not something dead and buried, but alive and influential, having lured Chione and Aaron back in time and trapping them there. What unfolds makes for a highly engaging read.

Original, refreshing and captivating from first to last, The Ka will appeal to historical fiction fans with a fascination for the supernatural.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ka, A superb coming together of past and present as the magic of Ancient Egypt reaches into our contemporary world.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 19, 2015
Being a lover of all things to do with Ancient Egypt and having read previous works by the author I was interested to see what Ms Deal would do with the time of the pharaohs. I wasn't disappointed as, in The Ka, she weaves a magical tale that takes us from modern-day Egypt, deep into the time of the pharaohs as Chione, and Aaron, part of an expedition to the Valley of Queens, begin to feel that they have more then just a passing connection to events that transpired in this very spot thousands of years earlier. Chione in particular, is prone to 'visions' or moments of intuition which lead her to discern that she may have walked this path on earth long before her current lifetime. Could she be the reincarnation of the one whose body lies entombed somewhere below ground as the excavation seeks to uncover what may be the greatest archaeological discovery of the century? It's difficult not to give too much away here, but let me say that the reader will be entranced by the ongoing relationship between Chione and Aaron, who despite trying to remain detached, find themselves being drawn ever closer by the events that took place so long ago. There are unexplained deaths, attempted robbery of the ancient tomb and vicious sandstorms for the archaeologists to contend with before the final secret of the tomb is revealed and with it, Chione and Aaron's connection with ancient history. Expect a wonderful twist in the tale as we reach the conclusion of The Ka, which will leave you wishing and dreaming of that land far away and a time long before ours, when great kings ruled the land and powerful magic transcended time itself.
