The Kindly Man (Rumville Book 1) Kindle Edition
“Use your second chance wisely…”
Only the dead get a second chance, so they say in the destitute back streets of 18th century London. For Hannah Ginter, decades of abuse have long since left her without hope of anything, let alone a second chance. Riddled by the pox, addicted to gin, brutalised by her vicious bawd and the men who use her, she already has one foot planted in the corner of Cross Bones cemetery reserved for fallen women like her. Each day is a torment and a trial she can only ever escape via drunken oblivion.
Waking up in a doorway with no recollection of the night before is not something new for Hannah, but when she finds even the people closest to her no longer recognise her, realisation dawns that something far stranger than being robbed of a night’s memories has befallen her.
Escaping the desperate world of rogues, thieves and whores she has existed in for so long, her only friend a broken and bitter ex-soldier, she discovers that betwixt and between the London of money and privilege that first used and then discarded her and the underworld of crime and poverty that slowly destroyed her, exists a third city.
A city of miracles. A city of wonders. A city of monsters. A city that has conspired to give her a second chance.
But is it one she can use wisely or is it one that will simply allow the dark desires of the greatest city on Earth to destroy her once more? Can she escape her past to find a future that does not end in the mud of Cross Bones or is she cursed to simply live through the same wretched life all over again?
Or will a monster with two minds have other plans for her…
The Kindly Man, part one of Rumville, a dark fantasy of broken lives and second chances set against the backdrop of 18th Century London.

About the author

Andy Monk is an independent writer of dark, speculative fiction, a professional daydreamer and inventor of worlds who lives in Suffolk in the UK
His mind, however, is usually to be found in various other fantastical places.
Andy always wanted to be either a writer or a professional footballer. As his fledgling footballing career was hampered by an inability to kick, head, pass or doing anything with the ball other than trip over it and faceplanting in the mud, he eventually decided to plump for the writing.
Though he is still more than capable of tripping up and faceplanting in the mud...
The majority of Andy's books are dark historical fantasies, focussing on vampires and the humans who find themselves drawn into their orbit. This world currently encompasses three separate series and three novellas, In the Absence of Light (primarily set in London between 1679 and 1737) is Andy's first published work. All works branded as In the Company of Shadows - currently Rumville (set in London in 1710) and The Night's Road (set in the Holy Roman Empire between1630-1631), and the novellas Precious Things (1837), The Burning and A House of the Dead (both 1630) - are all subsequent works, featuring both new and returning characters in the same universe.
Outside of his vampire universe, Andy has published the Hawker's Drift series, a fantasy saga chronicling the inhabitants of a remote town in the old American west and their interactions with the town's mayor, who may, or may not, be the Devil. Plus the standalone fantasy novels The Sorrowsmith and The House of Shells, which, while not forming a series, are both set in the same universe.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2021This book took hold of me and wouldn’t let go until I devoured it. Though the street language was a little difficult at first, I quickly got used to it. I’ve read four of the Rumville books in several days and anxiously await the fifth releasing in December. This is one of the best authors I’ve read in quite some time and probably THE best of the Amazon independent authors I’ve read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2020Great book. It started out great with interesting characters and plots. I just couldn’t get into it at the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2020I have not read anything else by this author prior to reading this. I love this book. It is very spooky and keeps you engaged throughout the novel. The characters are believable and the pacing is perfect. I look forward to reading more by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2020I've never read a book from this author before but the description I read of The Kindly Man (Rumville Book 1) sounded intriguing so I signed up for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. Having just finished reading, i'm still not sure what I just read. While the story seemed to flow well it dragged a lot and while I can understand the use of slang and dialect of the characters for their time and place, it made things confusing and hard to follow. I willingly admit to googling some of it for a better understanding of what was being said. Then I find a glossary of it all at the back of the book. The twist ending left me with an "ugh, now what" feeling but made me glad I finally reached the end of the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2020Great book was interesting and good. I was given an arc for a honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars favourite of all Andy Monks series
It took me a little time to get my head around the flash speak, I would recommend anyone to bare with it if they feel the same took me about a chapter to get into it but now I find my daily language has the odd sprinkling of it!
This series like all his others is a romping good read (with two of my favourite characters), strong and gripping story arc that makes you think. After all who wouldn’t want a second chance to maybe do things better this time around or maybe make the same mistakes. In parts made my heart fair thump in anticipation of what would happen, hallmark of a great story in my humble…….
Thanks to the author and yes please I would love some of more of these characters story please and thinking you!

5.0 out of 5 stars The beginning of an exceptional series!
Down amongst the slums in eighteenth century London lived the thieves, murderers, disease ridden prostitutes and all the other dregs of Society. A short and brutal life "enjoyed" by all. One such debased older woman wakes up in an alley and finds herself young and beautiful again. How and why? She finds herself becoming involved with a one eyed and crippled former cavalry officer who had fallen on hard times. The pair are being blackmailed by one of London's most feared gangsters . The prognosis being, hanged for witchcraft or hanged, drawn and quartered for high treason. I just couldn't put the book down and cannot wait to read the next instalment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good storyline but too long in getting there
Good storyline but then gets boring and drawn out. Will not read other books in the series
