About the Author
Chad Dankert is a creative director and storyteller. As a child, he grew up doodling on all of his papers in school. Similar to Mr. Wilson, he believes design, art, and creativity can help engage people and bring them together in meaningful ways, and that anyone can learn to be an artist through practice and patience. This is his debut picture book.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2022We love this book! This book is a great tool to use to talk to kids about the meaning of kindness and how they can be kind to others and themselves. I have not yet run across a book that teaches kids early on that being kind to oneself is just as important as being kind to others. I have a 7 and a 9 year old and we have read this book multiple times, and each time we have a different discussion as to what kindness actions they can do. It is easy for them to understand and, as a parent, I have so much appreciation for the questions on the bottom of the pages as they have led us to have more in depth discussions about how my kids view kindness and what they take away from the kindness “ingredients”. The illustrations and bright and colorful, the students represent a diverse group (we were especially excited to see kids with glasses!), and we had fun imagining what would happen if the other buttons on the kindness machine get pressed. I highly recommend this book as a simple, and informative way to teach kids about how they can show kindness to themselves and others! And because all of the buttons on the Kindness Machine don’t get pushed, my kids have already said they want a sequel! High praise from a 7 and 9 year old!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2022I received The Kindness Machine ARC to offer my honest review.
Everyone’s favorite teacher, Mr. Wilson, invented the Kindness Machine. He frequently creates clever gadgets to teach math and improve reading. This time, he brought in a huge contraption that harnesses superpowers—The Kindness Machine. The Kindness Machine produces prompts that immediately engage the children in simple acts of kindness—Smile, Say It, Love Yourself, Invite and Include, and Be a Chef (my personal favorite). Soon these kind actions turn into superpowers that propel the class to choose kindness. The illustrations are bright and cheerful, making the book a joy to turn each page. I love the discussion questions before the story. This gives teachers and students a starting point to think and talk about kindness.
The Kindness Machine is a must in the classroom and children’s libraries. Bravo, Dankerts on your debut success.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2022The Kindness Machine deserves to be in all schools, libraries and homes! This book dives into why it’s important to be kind to others but how to also be kind to ourselves. To teach being kind to ourselves at such a young age is so important! The additional questions throughout the book that help parents, teachers, grandparents dig a little deeper and actually engage in a discussion is something I found to be very unique. It’s a creative story that is fun and so enjoyable. The illustrations are very inclusive, which we need more of!! Looking forward to a book series or kids show for this because it would totally take off! Kindness matters!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2023First and foremost, as the author of The Kindness Machine, to everyone who has written a review. I truly appreciate it and enjoy reading each review.
I wrote The Kindness Machine because as a mother and a teacher, I want my children and students to be a lot of things, but when you peel back what it is really important, it all comes down to kindness. This book celebrates the power of a teacher, an eager class, a lifelong concept and the importance of being kind to others and also to ourselves. Thank you for being part of this journey. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. It is my goal that this book helps to continue the kindness ripple in homes and classrooms around the world.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2022I won this book in a giveaway and loved it so much I bought 10 more copies here on Amazon to give away to local teachers. A simple yet powerful message to instill in our young children.
The illustrations were simple and very inclusive. I read this with my son in the days leading up to him starting kindergarten and it held his attention and we were able to start a conversation about what it means for him to be kind. Overall I think every elementary school teacher should have a copy to read with their class, and have students make their own kindness machine with the printable the author provides on her website.
Thank you Christina Dankert for a wonderful book!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2022The Kindness Machine is a great addition to my classroom library and home book shelf! I loved the illustrations of this book and the whole concept of the kindness machine. I love how it introduces ways to be kind that are easy for kids to understand and the kindness machine gets them excited about carrying about those ideas in the real world. My 4 children enjoyed this book as much as my 18 preschoolers that I teach. I also enjoyed the discussion questions in the book to get the children engaged in the conversation of promoting kindness. It’s a terrific book and one I will read many times throughout the school year to my class.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2022The Kindness Machine has been the perfect addition to both my classroom and my children at home for their personal collection.
Mr. Wilson introduces his 2nd grade classroom to the Kindness Machine. When he asks the students, “Raise your hand if you have a superpower”, no one raised their hand.
He talks to the class about how everyone can show kindness through a smile, being compassionate, using kind words, and by loving yourself.
The students discover their superpowers by simply showing they know how to be KIND.
The colorful pictures, happy faces on Mr. Wilson and his students, and the drawings are simply amazing. The illustrator truly took the words in the story and painted a picture that explains it beautifully.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2023This is a fantastic book that shows kids how small acts of kindness have a HUGE effect on others! I bought 5 copies of this book to put in local Little Free Libraries. This is an essential book for every teacher as it has question prompts to begin a valuable discussion about how we can all show more kindness. My husband is a teacher, and took it to school and the principal read the book in the morning announcements ... and it was a hit for the entire elementary school. Just buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful story with a strong message - loved it!
What a fantastic story and message! The story draws you in and along with the children as they learn all the different ways to be kind, both to each other and to themselves. I think it is so wonderful to have included being kind to ourselves in the book - that is often a component of kindness that is overlooked and undervalued as we get older. I appreciated the discussion questions at the beginning, as well as the special kindness questions on some of the pages - they were helpful in engaging the reader. The illustrations are colourful and engaging and I love the look of the Kindness Machine. All in all, a wonderful story I can highly recommend!
