The King's Dragon (Fire and Valor Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 801 ratings

Lord Tristram Radcliffe has a secret—he is the only dragon at the king’s court in Llangard. It’s a secret he’s kept from the knights he’s fought beside, from the ladies who bat their lashes at him, and from his closest companion, Prince Reynold. If it were to get out, he’d be banished to the Mawrcraig Mountains along with the rest of his kind, but the kingdom of men is the only one he’s ever known, and his heart lives in the stone halls of those who’d count him an enemy.

When the old king dies and Prince Reynold takes the throne, two visitors from the north throw Tristram into the middle of the ancient conflict between dragons and men. They put him on a collision course with the king’s shadow, Bet Kyston, a dangerous assassin who may want him dead or may want more of Tristram that he’d ever thought to give.

With the eyes of dragons upon him and a threat from the north creeping toward the home he loves, Tristram must weigh his allegiances before his dual legacies tear him apart.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Simmering with sexual and political tension, The King's Dragon will pull you close, and won't let go until its final pages. A wonderfully rich and compelling world."
~
Ariana Nash, author of Silk & Steel

"Intricate plot threads intertwined with gripping tension, chemistry, and built on a fantasy world that rivals any peer in the genre. Vivid characters that aren't cutouts of fantasy tropes, but real people with faults and virtues that will engage the reader.

This book showcases the best of Fawkes and Burns' writing and style--perfectly meshed storytelling rich in complicated and complex characters, with a plot that kept me afraid, engrossed, and my heart in my throat. An added dash of upended gender stereotypes and a refreshing addition of varied LGBTQ+ romances made this a standout in the genre. A fantastic start to a series and I cannot wait for the rest!"
~
SJ Himes, author of Knight's Fire

"Burns and Fawkes weave a complex, multifaceted fantasy tale of heroes and heroines facing dangers from both within their kingdom and without that captivates you and keeps you turning the pages. The world they've created is full of potential--I want to know more about the dragons and the threat from the Torndals! And after that unexpected twist near the end, I especially want to know where these two authors will take readers next."

~
Jenn Burke, author of Not Dead Yet

"Incredibly detailed world building, and a raft of characters who keep me guessing and turning pages!"
~
Allison Temple, author of Hot Potato

I waited until I read all 3 books before reviewing because often the series doesn’t live up to the first book’s potential. Thankfully, this set of books is delightful from start to finish. The author chose to tell the story from the viewpoint of many characters which makes for a very rich tale. By far the best dragon shifter stories I’ve read. My highest recommendation!

    4 stars

This one took me a fair while to get into. There are a number of POV’s used to tell the story, and they’re all needed to understand everyone’s motivations, but thats what I found hard to get the swing of. All of a sudden it clicked and I was hooked.

I enjoyed Tris and Bet with their dance around each other. I can’t wait to see where it goes from here. I loved the dragons in this and the way their hoards work, that they all focus on one particular thing. Watching Tris give away a piece of his hoard away it was shown how hard it was to part with.

I’ll be interested to see if there is a reason behind Reyands actions throughout the book.

All of the characters are interesting and I hope we see more of each in the next instalment.

I devoured this book in two days. I came upon this work after asking a writer friend about recommendations for a solid fantasy novel with queer protagonists. I was not disappointed. Fawkes and Burns do an exceptional job of creating distinct, compelling characters in a familiar world. The fact that each chapter switches POV was not a distraction for me; in fact, I found it to be a more rewarding storytelling format. I grew attached to several of the main characters quickly because we are given such an insight into their inner workings. The overall plot was a simple one, but the intricacies of each character's journey layered on so many elements. The sex scenes were just what I needed - steamy and realistic without plunging the book into any stereotypes of a traditional romance novel. And when I say the scenes were realistic, trust me. Not that it needs it, but this works gets the stamp of authenticity from a promiscuous gay man. I shall be impatiently awaiting the next book in this series.

There is a fun story here, and some promising world building, but the pace, family and court history, and relationships need time to percolate. While books like this can be too long, much of what happened here lacked intrigue and romantic burn, and the book cried out for more development.

I'm at a newish job that is very stressful, and I need something to get out of my head. For the first time in my 32 years of living, music wasn't enough. So I was desperate and tried a couple of smutty audiobooks but they were... overwhelmingly unsatisfying. Not a good venture into audiobooks and I almost gave up, which would mean hell at my job. So I threw in the towel and was like, how about less smut?

Oh boi. So I read a good deal and I was nervous about the voiceovers- so far no good- and these narrators come along and I'm just blown away. I don't read much anything with women as main characters but god this is good stuff. I want to hear her and him and all their characters! Everything you read in other reviews is true, but I have no problems with pacing if I want to know what happens (and the author is not wasting my time) nor multiple POVs if all the POVs promise something different and delicious. And it's all here. And SO FUNNY. I'm pretty biased for anything that makes me laugh and I'm 3 hours in and I'm already quoting the book in my head and smiling. Love it so far! Already can't wait to read anything else!

The King’s Dragon by W.M. Fawkes and Sam Burns
Fire and Valor Book 1. High Fantasy with multiple lands in a kingdom and dragon shifters. Traces of romance beginnings that are expected to become more in subsequent books. Alternating chapters between six or more main characters.
Lord Tristen Radcliffe is a dragon in hiding. When the current King is killed and Prince Reynold takes the throne, the conflict between dragons and men escalates.

Kingdom politics and intrigue with danger and darkness. The new king is more a monster than those he’s imprisoned. Obviously my sympathy lies with the dragons here.
This ends without a cliffhanger though it is clearly not the end of the story. A great hook will want you to proceed directly into book 2.
Enthralling once you can keep all the POV’s separate and clear.

🎧 I listened to an audiobook version narrated by Lessa Lamb and Greg Boudreaux. They did a fantastic job, each with multiple character voices that were distinct for all the different POV’s. It was a bit slow in tempo so I listened to this at 1.5.

3.0 out of 5 stars Took a little long to get going

I like most of the characters and the plot is okay. The little kid Roland is cool. I like perceptive characters. Rhiannon kicks a××. Hafgan is a sugarbun. Tristram is a precious little knifenerd. Not such a fan of Bet, though. Shame, that of all people, he's the guy, that get's to hook up with Tristram. Their chemistry is weird and when they are alone, his complexes shine through heavily. Yeah, he's hot and mysterious, but that's it. My only other beef with this book is, that i found myself getting bored a few times, because there are so many POV characters and they usually dance around the same subject, eyeing it from different stances, but that mostly just slows down the narration of the story instead of enriching it. The pacing feels longwinded. (Attention! Angry spoiler: and what inconsiderate schmuck of a "lover" do you need to be to not bother with getting your partner prepped, before the deed?! That ain't sexy and you can't tell me otherwise)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fire & Valor series - amazing, engrossing, thrilling
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 7, 2022
This series is a stunning, well written and engrossing trilogy. As an avid reader of science fiction, fantasy and many LGBTQ+ tropes, I’ve adored every minute of these books and would recommend them to any likeminded readers. My only critique is that there are only 3 books from this world to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nation and self
Reviewed in Canada on May 27, 2020
This was an absolutely fantastic, read in one sitting, impossible to put down book! With an intricate world and multiple well formed characters there were so many woven stories going on of interest and each person had a stake that the reader comes to care about.

In a nation where dragons once ruled through slavery before being driven out, dragons are seen as monsters by humans. Surprisingly none of them seem to know that dragons can also shift into a human form, which has benefitted Tristram, a lord living in the kingdom for most of his life. As a half dragon his heritage must remain hidden but that secret becomes a risk when two dragons come to see the human nation in their own human forms.

The story is told from the POV of each different character for the different things that they have going on. This gives the unique side of the story from each angle as the Crown Prince takes over as King and starts to make changes. It starts small, affecting the Knights and the guard, and the shadow who has always worked, well, in the shadows. But soon the new King's actions are spiraling out to affect more of the kingdom and threaten a host of new problems. There is the concern if loyalty and treason against the rights and needs of a nation. It ramps up continuously until it seems there is no way out to lead to an explosive climax. The results promised a solution to the immediate concerns, but far more problems to come in the continuing story. Excellent book and exciting new series!

5.0 out of 5 stars This bok is AWESOME

    SO FUN!
I loved all the characters! I particularly loved that the women were competent. Not a damsel in distress in sight! (Ok people get in trouble but it's not the "I randomly lost my brain and only a big strong man can save me" sexist version"). All the blatant sexism that bothers me to no end (for men, women, and anyone in between), is absent in this book. And the story was even better for it.

I also thought the authors did a great job of following the story by changing character points of view. I didn't find that hard to follow at all.

The only complaint I have is that the second one isn't out yet.
