Implacable Resolve (The Last Hunter Book 12) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,883 ratings

In war, even the simplest things are hard.

Admiral Jack Romanoff and his people have begun the liberation of Vesuvius from the xenophobic Novarites, but even something that straightforward is difficult. The enemy outnumbers them, and removing the threat won’t be easy. Worse, they are killing humans in job lots, so time is of the essence.

When retreat isn’t an option, you must advance.

Jack wants to spare as many Novarite civilians as he can, but the killing must end. With them on a planet and him in space, that limits his options, but he will compel their surrender by any means necessary. It will be a delicate dance, but he won’t stop until they admit defeat or die.

In the face of overwhelming odds, never let your resolve waver.

I reviewed another of the books in this series. I don't usually re-read books once I've finished any of them. I have read literally thousands of books in my lifetime ( am 77 and started reading to get to sleep when I was in my teens).
I am a fast reader, so I go thru slot of paperbacks, hard covers, etc. This series is so intriguing that I have read most of them at least twice and some six or more times. The grammar is also very good, which is important to me. If you like "space opera" type books, I highly recommend this series and others by J. N. Chaney. Great reads!!

This is still an enjoyable series after 12 books. The action and characters are fun. BUT - Things are always a little too easy. Every project the engineers or construction crews work on takes less than two weeks. My biggest peeve in this book - in the first two-thirds of the book, someone says a variation of “you’re not wrong” every few paragraphs. For the love of Pete, mix it up a little! Try “you’re right” or “there’s some truth in that” or anything else. Please.

I really like this series. This was another really good storyline. The Poseidon group is up to something. No news from Patrick. Lisa is coming into her own as an intelligence agent & all of Patrick’s gifts are really making a difference but it’s her additional technology and creativeness that really makes the difference in the ultimate projects. When I say changes are being made to Hunter (& all the battleships), I cannot enough come close to expressing the totality of them. Wow! I do wonder though if in the long run, the battleships exterior strength will be weakened or some areas more vulnerable. The Tarden warriors on Deer have all been executed by the Tarden judiciary. I think we’ll see more of the Tarden civilians in the future. I’m hoping Briggs will be a frequent cool character. Tardens still working to fix their ships for the move to new Copenhagen. The Novarite prisoners on Deer seem to be up to something. I think the decision on the murdering, empiristic, arrogant, power seeking novarite leaders and warriors deserve the same outcome as the Tarden warriors but will that happen? What Jack and crew find at the last novarite held human planet is a surprise. In fact, there’s multiple surprises, ranging from “OMG!” to “oh crap! to “okay, we can make this work,” to “WTH?” And just when Jack and crew think maybe things are finally going their way,…BOOM! There’s one heck of a surprise and intense cliffhanger!
Here’s a question for anyone reading reviews:
If you were doing a job for years, have a lot of experience, and you’re very good at your job. You’ve had another person, who’s been working under you and learning. Now the company is creating your same job (position) for other Admirals and wants to hire that person to do what you do. In their new position they will have the same responsibilities as you. Should they be given the same salary you are currently making? Btw-you will now get a new person (or 2 or3) to teach so that, once ready, they can also then be transferred to do your same job for other Admirals.
I bet this question would get different answers. I wonder whether the answers would be different yet, common to each other on a generation graph? Would be interesting for authors to place on their Facebook pages for comments/discussion 😉

This novel details the preparations for reclaiming Vesuvius from the Novarites. Amanda and Derek are being groomed to be Captains of their own ships once they come on line and Jack is also to get his own flag staff and so the Hunter is being refitted to accommodate twice the crew so that a 2nd crew can be trained. Since it is mainly about the preparation, there is not much action , except for a fight for power amongst the Novarites and a surprise incursion by the Poseidon Group....
This novel deals with the machinations behind the war, describing relationships and strategic manoeuvres before battle will commence and so action is relatively limited. It is however, a crucial step between one battle and the next - even if the next battle may not the one it was planned to be!

Chaney and Mixon just keep you guessing as they prosecute battles on multiple fronts in various systems. Now Admiral Romanoff has finally gotten close to have one or two more battleships coming on line. Simple? No! The war with two different alien forces, a coup that crippled the Confederation as well as splitting it in two has drained resources! Finding qualified personnel and/or training them takes time they don’t have! They will have to get creative! So… Admiral Romanoff and crews have to protect the world where the new seat of government resides, find more resources to eradicate an alien held human world., deal with the other aliens military structure, and free the other part of the Confederation that has been taken over by a coup. Did I leave anything out? Oh ya! There is another far away cluster of humans that were unknown to the Confederation that are very warrior like that may be more advanced in some areas that will have to be dealt with at a later time! Trust me! You don’t get bored reading these books!

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Plot Twist

Complete reversal of character for Jack Romanoff. Meant to be saving the planet Vesuvius where billions had been killed and billions more at risk. Instead they leave the cluster with the only two functioning battleships including the crew in training for an additional one. Jumped blindly without any rational reason instead of just destroying the gate and going to liberate Vesuvius. Very disappointing twist that made no sense. First book in the series that is a disappointment.

Very frustrating that the author used the word behooves repeatedly. Apart from that a good read in a good series.

I am not sure how the author is maintaining the level of action, drama, science, descriptions and character development but this book is as good as the rest of the series, totally addictive.
