4.5 out of 5 stars 3,479 ratings

Be where your enemy is not. – Sun Tzu

The time has come for Commodore Jack Romanoff and the crew of the battleship Delta Orionis to strike back at the robotic Locusts. He’s outgunned, outnumbered, and commands a battleship flown by battered and bloodied reenactors and trainees.

Yet they must win.

The Locusts control New Copenhagen, but that’s the only place they can get nuclear warheads for their missiles. They must launch an alpha strike to take the system and hold it against all comers. If they fail, they lose their most potent offensive weapons and leave billions trapped under the invaders’ robotic heels.

They must not fail.

Everything I have said about the Author's previous books applies to this book about the characters, dialog and their relationship to each other.

An author, once said to be a successful writer; develope likable characters and then put them into the most horrible situations (well loosely translated). These authors are not bashful carrying that philosophy out.

My only beef is that I believe that in a war being nice only gets your people killed. If you are resource limited and ambush is your only chance, asking a superior force to surrender is not a good plan.

Fortunately that become a non-issue. Which is another thing I like about these Authors is that no matter how the characters game out a battle senario, the 1st contract with the enemy resolves into improvisation. - just like life.

The battle scenes are extremely well done for both the space and ground action drama, with very good pace.

I found this is a very good read, and I look forward to the next in the series - enjoy.

8/10 The action has ratcheted up several notches and things are developing quickly now. There are still too many long passages of philosophizing, introspection, and repetitive explanations but there's a lot more meat on the bone in this book than the first two.
My suspicions regarding the aliens seem to be proving out although nothing is quite certain yet.
I'm still a little torn whether or not I want to continue with the series or wait until it's finished but it's been a great ride so far and I've become invested in the characters and the story. I expect this is going to be quite a long saga as they are still dealing with the edges of the alien incursion and there's no telling what's been going on with the mess they left back home.
Still it's a fun read and technically pretty well done although there are a few proofreading hiccups here and there.

At the Navy depot is a group of people who have set up their own colony. Jack has to negotiate with a former frenemy(?) to regain access to the precious weapons and ships there. Not surprisingly, there are a few teething problems.
The nuclear warheads had been removed and stored at New Copenhagen, so the planet must be liberated from the Locusts so as to enhance their weapons as the missiles are relatively useless without warheads. They come up with a plan to lead the Locusts away from the planet and then to jump back, send down the Marines to get the warheads, rearm the missiles and then be ready for the attacking Locusts. Will everything go to plan?
There are also some incubating aliens on the Hunter. Can they be revived and can we communicate? Only time will tell....
While the lead up to the battle takes most of the book, the actual firefight is over fairly quickly. Fortunately the lead up is gripping enough to keep you entertained throughout.Another exciting and enthralling read in the Last Hunter series.

    So far really good.
One complaint in the story line so don’t read further if you don’t want to know. A ship the size of , or made out of, an asteroid is all good. So how in the wide world of sports do you lose your jump drive, hyperdrives, and most ridiculously, the gate you brought with you that was absolutely necessary for your survival. Did you strap it to the outside of the ship? Come on man. Rant over. Don’t let this keep you from an excellent series. I forge on!

It's a good idea for a movie. I have read 3 of the books and I will start with the next book. This is a great example of a author that makes a story come out

Book 3 had errors throughout and was a fun read. Again the characters and plot are developed well enough. The plot has started to be strung out and reads a bit slower than the others. The characters are developing well and adapting to new problems on the way with creative insights on the aliens. The team must find the warhead's and nettle the locust's in order to save the sector and find their payloads for the missiles. O dos enjoy the overall of the book, bit could of been a bit faster in the telling.

As you would expect of any mixed bag of people, some take it into their heads to look out for themselves first. Fortunately for the Confederation, honor means something to the Navy seeking to defend its people.

The invaders seem to have the upperhand, but our heroes continue to fight and gather more defenders.

That's why it's a series. The story continues to unfold.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book

An excellent continuation of the series. There is probably enough information about past action to allow someone to start here. However reading the preceding book will further enhance the story. There are battle above and on planet, lots of problems to hinder our heroes, with strong description and dialogue to support the action.

4.0 out of 5 stars The first strike back at the enemy

The Hunter has reached the depot system but finds it already occupied. They make an uneasy peace with the people occupying the station and re-supply their ship to strike at the enemy in the nearby system.

Again a good book with a good balance of action and preparation (meaning calmer times between action). The characters are again interesting and nicely varied. My personal Crusherite (combining Wesley Crusher and Kryptonite) Derek Calvo is taking a backseat on this one and there are more different protagonists as before. Maybe the authors noticed him being over-used in book 2. Recommended and looking forward to the next book. Bought the next 5 books on a whim.
