The Last Hunter Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.6 out of 5 stars 5,960 ratings

Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Two centuries after the Confederation staved off an invasion by the robotic Locusts, Captain Jack Romanoff faces mandatory retirement from an ever-shrinking navy. Actions speak louder than words. The Confederation doesn’t think the Locusts are coming back.

But what if the politicians are wrong?

Snared in a scheme he doesn’t fully understand or trust, Jack gets his promotion, but it comes with a catch. With a crew of rejects, he must restore the most powerful warship humanity has ever built, after centuries of neglect and decay, before time runs out.

If he fails, humanity might not need to worry about history repeating itself ever again.

I've read most of the books in this series. If Amazon allowed half stars, I would probably give it 4.5 stars. Since I can't do that, and since I have enjoyed the series so much, I chose to give 5 stars instead of 4.

Does the book have flaws? Yes. Is it perhaps a little weak in the science area? Probably. I will be honest, I can enjoy a well-written book even if there are a few flaws, and some misuse of scientific fact. It is, after all, a work of fiction. I took to the lead character quickly and did the same with supporting characters as they were introduced. For me, it took a few books for this series to hit its stride, but it's been a wild ride since then.

Mr. Chaney is on the short list of my favorite authors, and I have purchased many of his books. And it doesn't hurt that this series was written with Terry Mixon, another author I enjoy. He's teamed with other authors I like, such as Jonathan Brazee (a very nice series) and Terry Maggert (another of my all-time favorite series).

I realize that people are looking for different things when they read a book. You can read other reviews to see if any issues that concern you are in this series. If you don't discover any showstoppers, I highly recommend that you try this series. And go beyond the first book before you make up your mind.

This is a really good book.

Sometimes Chaney projects, while always solid and a decent read, lack somewhat in real character development...and characters come out slightly cookie cutter.
I am not trying to be critical, just stating a fact as I see it. Note I still buy his books lol.

This is Not one of those book where it lacks!
In fact the character development is absolutely stellar. In fact, it's pretty much close to perfection... without going overboard to the point of boredom.
This is Space Opera at it's best.

The story is really good...and trust me, it expands significantly in book two.
It's similar to Battle Star Galactica...if someone put a lot more thought and imagination into Galactica...and wrote better characters...then tossed it in a blender with Lost Stars... only without getting mind numbingly boring by avoiding entire repetitive chapters on the math and timing of space battles.
In short, it's obviously inspired by some really good stuff...
    And done better.
    A Lot better.

    It's also entertaining and Fun.
Heck, I absolutely love some of these characters.
Some of the way situations are handled are a bit over the top but...in a 'chuckle about it and keep reading' type of way, not a 'ruins the book' kind of way.

As long as this series is written this well...
I will be reading every book that comes out in it.
And, no real spoiler - the second book is awesome thus far!

    Great Job!

Excellent start for a new series by Chaney and Mixon. ‘The Last Hunter’ involves Captain Jack Romanoff, a Naval captain soon to be forcibly retired from the Confederation navy. The Confederation hasn’t had a major battle in the past two hundred years, and it shows. Gradually rotting and increasingly corrupt, the Navy is now a shell of what it used to be, especially when it comes to absolute naval power. Gone now are the old warships of the past; the Hunter class, replaced by smaller, more efficient, and cheaper battle cruisers. It's all down now to the forward thinking of Jack’s father, the previous Grand Admiral of the Confederation Navy, and his vision of needing both the old ships that won the last war, but are slowing rotting away, and his son doing the impossible. Excellent writing, and character development is superb. The story moves very well as would be expected by these two fine writers. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the series as it comes out, as ‘The Last Hunter’ is an excellent introduction. I was provided an ARC for an honest review, but as good as it was I purchased the book anyway. Gotta support those authors who do such good work.

This is an excellent start to this series. The story has been done before, obsolete ship, crew of misfits and criminals coming together as the last hope for humanity against the alien horde. However the writing is crisp and smart, the characters are good if a little lacking in depth but the story is the main driver. I liked the writing a lot and am Looking forward to more of these. The narration is very good Jeffrey Kafer does an excellent job, the narration does the story justice.. The book ends on a cliff hanger but a good one. Highly recommended.

Purchased the book because I have many books written by JN Chaney. The start made me slightly apprehensive, but it very quickly caught my attention and held it for the rest of the book. 5/5 for sure and I am buying the rest in the series as they come out..
