The Last Kill (A Murder on Maui Mystery Book 10) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 237 ratings

Lights. Camera. Murder. When lies become reality, can Poe find the truth before a killer strikes again?

As Maui’s best private investigator, Edgar Allan “Poe” Rutherford understands the importance of keeping a low profile. That becomes impossible when a new reality TV show comes to the island, which features an eccentric handful of divorcees looking for love. But when one of the women is poisoned to death, the show’s production comes to a grinding halt.

At the same time, a few miles down the beach, a divorce attorney is stabbed multiple times while she sits on a lounge chair and watches the sun set over the Pacific Ocean. The methods of murder, as well as the victims, couldn’t be more different, yet Poe has a sneaking suspicion they’re somehow related.

As Poe dives deep into the backgrounds of the show’s cast and crew, as well as the attorney, he learns that nothing’s real in reality TV and everyone has a dark secret.

The Last Kill is the tenth standalone novel in the Murder on Maui series. If you enjoy colorful characters, a touch of humor, and plots that bend and twist like a palm tree on a windy beach, then you’ll love Robert W Stephens’ mysteries.

You can’t go wrong with a Maui setting, interesting characters who you would actually want to know and good, feasible plots with a fresh twist. I like to follow how Poe, the lead character, reasons things out. Got me hooked and I am OK with that.

This was another excellent story by the author. As one reviewer stated "Poe is a thinker and makes thoughtful deductions". His decisions are based on deductive reasoning in his investigations. As usual his supporting characters, Alana, Foxx, Hani, Mara and Kalani are part of the story.
My wife and I also like the way "Poe" talks to the reader. Makes the reader feel involved in the story. Look forward to the next installment.

how can you not like books about hawaii? good story line, Poe is not your usual bumbling idiot detective that stumbles into solving the mystery. he's not even a detective! however he is a thinker and manages to make deductions which is evidently difficult for the bureaucracy of many police departments. i gave it 4 stars because i would have liked more writing about the sights on the island; and to know about why he thought what he thought; and that his bar partner seemed to be one of those dummies that isn't a clear thinker. would Poe have gone into a financial venture with a dummy?
all in all, i read it in a day and enjoyed it.

  • Shirley Blane, author of The Widow's Revenge
5.0 out of 5 stars Another murder mystery in this series based on Maui
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 10, 2019
I have read all the books in this series and enjoyed every one. Poe, an independently wealthy ex-architect, now lives on Maui, having visited an old friend and stayed on. He now has an adorable little dog called (wait for it) Maui, and a beautiful wife who is a police detective on the island. Strangely, for a man who has no need to work for a living, he gets himself involved in murder investigations. Modest to the core, he solves every one, hands the credit to the police and the fee for his private investigative work to the local dogs home. In between, he swims, suns, runs and occasionally visits the bar he now owns with the old friend. Warning - reading this series may cause you to throw up your job and book a plane ticket to the Hawaiian islands!
