About the author

I'm an author of historical fiction (Early English/Saxon, Vikings and the British Isles as a whole before the Norman Conquest, as well as three 20th-century mysteries) and fantasy (now published under a different name). I've also written my first nonfiction book, The Royal Women Who Made England: The Women of the Tenth Century, which is available now.
I was born in the old Mercian kingdom at some point since 1066. Raised in the shadow of a strange little building, told from a very young age that it housed the bones of long-dead kings of Mercia and that our garden was littered with old pieces of pottery from a long-ago battle, it's little wonder that my curiosity in Early England ran riot. I can only blame my parents!
I like to write. You've been warned!
Not sure where to start your journey through Saxon/Early England?
If you're new to Saxon England, then Son of Mercia, book 1 in Eagle of Mercia Chronicles, is perhaps where you should start. And then follow on with Wolf of Mercia and Warrior of Mercia and the continuing books in the series.
King of Kings, book 1 in The Brunanburh Series, is the story of the build-up to the greatest battle on British soil you've probably never heard about, Brunanburh. 'An epic story of kingsmanship that will set in motion the pivotal, bloody Battle of Brunanburh where allies have to be chosen wisely.' The continuing series takes readers to Brunanburh and beyond.
And, coming in April 2025, Men of Iron, the first book in The Dark Age Chronicles. This trilogy will take my readers back to the very beginnings of Saxon England before the creation of Mercia and the other kingdoms.
If you like action adventure with a heavy dose of violence, foul language, and good old camaraderie - The Mercian Ninth Century series is for you, starting with The Last King (there are also Cleaner versions where much of the foul language has been removed - they can be a little harder to find but they are available). Fans of The Eagle of Mercia Chronicles will also find a familiar face. Or The Seventh Century, starting with Pagan Warrior, has a little more politics to go with the set-piece battles.
If you like stories about the forgotten women of history, then the Tenth Century series, starting with The Lady of Mercia's Daughter, is a good place to begin, the story of Lady Ælfwynn after the death of her mother. Or, The First Queen of England, with a little more romance.
If you're interested in the last century of Early England (before 1066) then The Earls of Mercia series is for you.
If you want to read it all, then you can read in chronological order or mix it up. The series weren't written in chronological order (I have a tendency to move backwards through time).
If you're as interested in the ancient kingdom of Mercia as I am, then the loosely connected, The Tales of Mercia is for you. The individual series can be read in this order but can be read in any order. I started my historical fiction writing journey with The Earls of Mercia, so yes, I began at the end.
1) The Dark Age Chronicles starting with Men of Iron, coming April 2025
2) Gods and Kings starting with Pagan Warrior.
3) The Eagle of Mercia Chronicles starting with Son of Mercia.
4) The Ninth Century books starting with The Last King
5) A detour to The Lady of Mercia's Daughter and A Conspiracy of Kings, from the Tenth Century series
6) The Earls of Mercia series starts with The Earl of Mercia's Father.
If you're interested in my 20th-century mysteries, then The Custard Corpses and The Automobile Assassination are the books for you. The Secret Sauce is coming soon. And Cragside, a standalone 1930s murder mystery set at the beautiful North Northumberland estate, and inspired by my Lockdown walks around the property.
My first non fiction book, The Royal Women Who Made England, is now published by Pen and Sword in hardback and ebook, detailing the information I used to write The Tenth Century series featuring Ælfwynn, Eadgifu and the daughters of Edward the Elder.

Happy reading:)

- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2025Some stories start out slowly but you have to keep going and gather the facts. This is the second book in this series and I am amazed how it's turned into an awesome epic.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2025One can believe this is real except that far too many of his warriors survive. The battle scenes are entirely believable.
It is an entertaining read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2022The writing is dynamic with you visualizing the story that mesmerized my imagination. The book was a written movie of the Mission Impossible Movie Series. It kept me riveted to the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2024We watch as Coelwulf adjusts to being Lord King of Mercia now. He is a reluctant ruler. He just wants to be part of the boys and be their leader. One of the big questions here is what happened to Icel? Also who is the traitor amongst the loyal warriors to Coelwulf?
As the band travels through the land, they encounter Raiders along the way. They seem to become constantly fighting and don’t have time to take a breathe. So the first half of the book is a bit repetitive for me. Fighting but not recuperating and barely eating, and somehow they are still strong enough to do this all over again.
But the second half really picks up. There are more personality clashes and individual traits that make some of the characters feel more real and interesting.
Also I must mention the admiration for Haden and the other horses which is apparent. I enjoy animal companions and their importance to their owners. This is fun to read. Haden also humbles Coelwulf, which makes him be more human and not such a super being.
We are left with some open plot lines, so it will be easy to pick up the next part of the journey.

REVIEW
This tale, my peeps, and fellow readers is one of those that makes me kind of upset. It had been too long a period since I read the first book in the series, and now I am agitated that I waited to continue. A rousing tale of battle filled with a plethora of surprises. The newly named King of the Mercians, Coelwulf is one determined individual. Despite all of the unknowns about his enemies, despite not knowing where half of his men are, and despite the fatigue and pain, he rallies his men time and time again to rid his land of the Raiders. All in all, a tale that keeps the reader glued to the pages.
4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ And no long wait to read book 3. 😊
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2021Is read story flows get more depth on characters if you like the 1st love this one. Highly recommend to read
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2020I love the series. I would ask why he uses the word "floor" instead of "ground" when action is taking place outside?
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2021Slither, slithered, and slithering used way to often, and in the wrong context. Why when outside he uses, fall on the floor, and not on the ground?

5.0 out of 5 stars I would read again
As mentioned by other reviews, yes, there are profanities in abundance - however , there are options to purchase ‘Cleaner’ versions as in the attachment here. Down to the nitty gritty now. This review is for book 2 which I’ve just finished. I read the first book very quickly. I agree with the comments of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. I dose it myself now and again; i dose. I have to say I’m not a purest when grammatical and spelling mistakes occur - they don’t detract from the stories and the author writes with a passion bringing out the best and the worst of his characters and I love that. The Eagle of Mercia Chronicles is where I initially read of Icel and I absolutely fell in love with him (it’s allowed- I’m a 74 year old female who can still dream). We are all very different when it comes to the genre of novels we like and I can fully recommend the novels of M J Porter, especially if you like vivid details of gory, blood curdling battles in and around the Viking age. Going back to the rife use of swear words in these novels, well, if you had a warrior with a sword or axe trying to kill you, what would you say??? I’m sure, “ Go away “, wouldn’t work or, “Ouch! That hurt you awful brute”, especially if a sword connected to your arm and took your hand off. “You illegitimate person”, wouldn’t work either if a toothless, smelly Viking warrior was trying to steal your beautiful, Mercian bred horse. M J Porter has become one of my favourite authors and the history lessons at the rear of his novels are very educational as are the swear words, several of which I’m sure will come in very useful. I shall now order Book 3 in this series and continue the journey of a new King who really doesn’t want to be a King. Thank goodness for Kindle.

This is a gripping read and full of action , telling what it must be like standing in a shield wall and to kill .. once again I couldn't put the book down

4.0 out of 5 stars Action all the way
WOW, I need to lie down and rest after reading this. If you love your history with action, blood and guts then this is the series for you. If you don't analyse the battles too much and accept that it's fiction your reading then you are in for a treat. I have read possible thousands ( I'm old ) of historical novels but I don't think I have ever come across so much bloodshed before. There is a story in there as well and some lighter moments, the hero can be a grumpy old s-- at times, but it is mainly about mayhem and slaughter and a great book for it. Highly recommended.
