- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2022This book was a complete surprise for me. I knew it was a love story, but it was so much more than that. Anna and Adam met when the time was right in both of their lives after both suffering heartaches. As some married couples, they started losing that honeymoon feeling. Little things started becoming big things, annoyances. Add in infertility and the stress really came on. They decided to take a trip to their favorite place to rekindle their feelings. A tragic event unfolds and makes Anna realize that the little things aren’t worth arguing over. That love is everything. The book does take a turn into what I would call fascinating stuff. I was glued to the pages and now I’m googling the topic. I haven’t been this invested and swallowed up by a book like this in a long time. I know I hugged my family a little bit more today. Amazing and thought provoking. Not to be missed! I’m so happy I was chosen by NetGalley to receive an arc of this masterpiece.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2023Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was slow in a few spots, predictable married life, then a major twist which really kept me reading feverishly as Anna progresses forward.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2022Anna met Adam right after she's jilted at the altar. Adam has a sense he will her almost immediately. As much as I don't usually believe in love at first sight, this author made me believe it. It was meant to be a vacation fling. Over in a few days. They get ready to say goodbye at the airport but everything changes in that moment. This story is tragic and incredibly told from both Anna and Adams point of view.
If you don't fall in love with this couple, you shouldn't be reading romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 20224 1/2 stars!
The title on this one gives a great deal away. You already know it's going to break your heart...at least a little....and it definitely does. Yet, it's still a beautiful love story with an ending that leaves you hopeful in a different way. So, be warned, if you're looking for a neat and clean Happily Ever After with this one...keep looking. But if you're wanting a book that takes you on a journey of love and sacrifice, then this one just might be for you.
Anna and Adam meet on holiday. It was supposed to be her honeymoon with another man so she was there with her best friend instead since the wedding had been called off and the groom was already with another woman. With no intention of starting anything romantic, Anna meets Adam and they were instantly drawn to one another. For all intents and purposes, they didn't plan for their relationship to extend past the vacation...but their hearts had other plans.
Years go by and life is hard. The relationship they had to start with doesn't necessarily look the same after all the wear and tear life has put it through. Yet after tragedy strikes, they find their love is still solid and true underneath all the other bluster. And where there's love, amazing things sometimes happen.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I voluntarily chose to read and review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2022“The Life We Almost Had” by Amelia Henley is a touching story about love, connection and second chances. Emotionally gripping throughout, the book will break your heart and put it back together multiple times. Relatable on so many levels—especially for anyone who’s struggled with infertility—this contemporary love story is set to be a summer must-have especially for romance and womens fiction fans.
The story was told in alternating points of view (for the most part) between Anna and Adam. It’s such an intimate way in to each character’s minds as we get to see how they first fall in love, fall apart, and lose their ability to communicate with each other out of assumptions and fear. It’s painful at times because we see how the breakdown in communication is affecting them (and how wrong they are in their assumptions on what each other is thinking). The characters are real, relatable and compelling. You are championing them on the entire time, hoping for their happy ending.
Just about every chapter ends dripping with foreshadowing and while that kept me turning the pages, it also annoyed me. I like a little foreshadow warning here and there but to end nearly every chapter with it was overkill. The plot does move quickly and while it is character driven, it isn’t slow or plodding. It’s hard to put down.
One thing I’m not seeing in reviews is the splash of magical realism you’ll find in the book. It wasn’t expected or alluded to in the synopsis and that can be bad or good depending on your reading preferences. If you’re a fan of magical realism like myself, then it’s a treat when you stumble across it (quite the twist that I’m still wrapping my head around), but if you aren’t a fan, you may chuck the book out the window. So be warned that there’s definitely a splash of that in here and will affect your take on the book.

Anna wasn’t looking for love when Adam swept her off her feet but there was no denying their connection, and she believed they would be together forever. Years later, a cruel twist of fate delivers a crushing blow, and Anna and Adam are completely lost to one another. Now, Anna needs Adam more than ever, but the way back to him has life-changing consequences. Is a second chance at first love really worth the sacrifice?
I don't want to give anything away but when I started reading this book I expected one thing and got something completely different! It was a pleasant surprise! It's a story that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. The author covers some heavy topics such as loss, grief, infertility and much more! Following along with Anna and Adam as they face that and much more is an emotional ride. Anna was a wonderful character and my heart went out to her and I'm sure yours will as well. Adam was a sweetheart. You could feel his love for Anna! It's a wonderful story and Anna and Adams' story will be with you long after the last page! Thank you Books Forward and Amelia Henley for sharing this beautiful story with me!

5.0 out of 5 stars It’s not your typical love story!
This is not a typical love story, but it’s our love story.
This story begins at the end, seven years after Anna met the love of her life, Adam on holiday. Is love at first sight really a thing? It certainly was for Adam and by the end of the holiday they were inseparable, but seven years later their world has come crashing down around them, can they ever retrieve what they've lost, and is the risk worth it?
This is Amelia Henley's debut novel in the romance genre, but this author is not new to writing, most will know her as psychological thriller author, Louise Jensen, whose books are amazing and her expertise in that genre shines through in this new one, with the intrigue she interlaces throughout this story, her words suggesting that one thing has happened when actually it's something completely different and not what you expect at all. The scientific element of the plot makes it so much more than just a love story and it's evident that the author has done some very extensive research to make this as realistic as possible and achieved what she set out to do. I did wonder at one point if what was happening was actually possible but, with modern technology, who knows what science can achieve.
I loved everything about this story, the characters, who were realistic, the plot, which was authentic and creative, it was heartbreaking and uplifting in equal measures, it was thought provoking, reminding the reader that we never know what is around the corner and we should never take our loved ones for granted, have that conversation today because tomorrow is never promised. I adored Anna and Adam, Nell and Josh and all of the other characters and, being an old romantic myself, I was desperate for a happy ending. Henley wrung every emotion from me throughout this book, and then some. I was so immersed in this story that I read it in two days and felt emotionally drained by the end, it was such an all consuming heartwrenching read, I can't wait to see more from her. I highly recommend this one, but you'll need tissues...lots of them!

4.0 out of 5 stars An unusual, twisty tale of love and loss
I wanted to read this book from the time that I found out that Louise Jensen had written a romantic fiction. I love her psychological thrillers and her writing style. Romantic fiction is not really my favourite genre, but if Louise was writing it, I knew it would be something a little different.
I got into the story of Adam and Anna right from the beginning. From the first page, we know that all isn’t well between the two, and so began the romantic tale that was just a bit different from the usual. Amelia’s writing style was great, and her chapter conclusions the best. The story was interesting and the writing kept you reading just a bit more all the time.
I thought all the characters to be believable and well rounded. I loved the character of Adam, even though he was a bit too perfect for me. The character of Anna was also very believable, however she annoyed me as I felt that she was nasty and the way she spoke to Adam at times made me want to slap her!
The setting was glorious and very easy to imagine. Falling in love in such a setting is easy, but staying in love? Real life plays it’s hand here as with all couples, and as you get absorbed into Adam and Anna’s world you need to prepare yourself for some heart wrenching emotional twists.
The tale balances precariously between romance, sentimentality and real life. The twists to the story are reminiscent of Louise’s thriller writing. You know when you have to hold on and just go with the flow, but it might tear your heart out! A very different read for me, but one that I will remember with a big smile on my face. No tears for me, but I’m sure there are plenty who are left sobbing at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your usual romance
Unlike some authors, I don’t think Louise Jensen has made any secret of the fact that she has a writing alter ego – Amelia Henley. It’s not uncommon with authors who turn to different genres. Having made her name with psychological thrillers, The Life We Almost Had is a romance. Well, kind of.
Romance isn’t really my thing – as my partner will cheerfully attest! Still, I’ve been known to read the occasional romance, mainly to ensure I don’t get too stuck in my reading habits. Even so, I was torn about reading this one. I thought of Jensen as a thriller writer and didn’t want my expectations messing with.
Then I started reading the reviews. And they were intriguing, so I had to try it.
What can I say about it? Certainly not a lot about the plot. It’d be too easy to include spoilers. What I will say is this. It is a romance, but it’s something else as well, which is hard to slot into any genre. And that’s not a bad thing, not by a long chalk. What Jensen (or Henley) has done is bring something very different to the game.
Her experience writing thrillers means you rarely reach the end of a chapter without having more questions. She leads you up the garden path several times – or possibly up several garden paths.
And she also does what she’s always done: she gets you to care for the characters. You invest in them, certainly enough to feel a range of emotions as you follow their stories. I won’t deny that I felt my own getting the better of me as we reached the end – and, yes, that does mean tears were involved.
If you want a story with a difference (not a romance, not a thriller, not anything that neatly slots into a category), one that will broaden your reading experiences, read this. And see whether you cry too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving, heard warming life affirming
WOW !! What an incredibly talented writer Louise Jenson is @fabricating_fiction.
If she’s not writing gripping psychological thrillers under her real name, she’s writing equally incredible romance novels under the pseudonym Amelia Henley. Where I’ve read a number of Louise Jensons psychological thrillers, this was my first time reading one written under Amelia Henley and I was not disappointed.
The Life We Almost Had was the most gripping and moving novel I have ever read. It’s taken me three days to compose myself enough to be able to write this review, as the novel was so fantastically written that I became completely engrossed in the whole story and I just had to compose myself and rejoin the “real” world.
I couldn’t put this book down and yet I didn’t want it to end at the same time. This novel really put my heart through the wringer, it was brilliant and life affirming. I cried at multiple parts of this story both happy and sad tears. I was just so completely moved. This whole novel was just on another level and I thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend this book to anyone. Just remember you might need a box of tissues 😥.
5/5 starts from me🌟💫

3.0 out of 5 stars I loved the love story.
The live story was you wanted for yourself. Girl meets guy in a bar etc. But the rest was so far fetched and unbelievable. Three star's as I did have a little tear in my eye
