The Lost Princess (The Balcom Dynasty) Kindle Edition

3.7 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

Where is Layla Balcom?

The most famous woman in the Galaxy, heiress to the Balcom empire, has vanished.
Has she simply exchanged her celebrity life for peace and quiet or has the unthinkable happened?
In the midst of the search, where rumours and speculation are rife, journalist Miles Goram thinks that he’s found the answer.

A girl on the run suggests that Layla could be a hostage, in a secret club where the rich indulge their fantasies. It’s located on Dalyster, a corrupt and secretive world. A place where his status as a reporter will do him no favours in his efforts to uncover the truth.

As he investigates, Miles finds that he is caught in the rivalry between a senior politician and Layla’s father.

And he has managed to upset both of them.

Review

Advance Readers comments.
Holy cow is that one hell of a story!
Lost Princess has a very similar feel to it as the Watergate movies from the '80s, but with space travel! It's dark, mysterious, and is almost equal parts sci-fi and thriller. I LOVED it!
It's a spectacular precursor to Ribbonworld and Jungle Green that really adds depth and perspective to already fantastic stories. It answered a lot of questions that I was left with after the first two.
I still can't get over your talent for taking technical dialogue and fitting it into a story without bogging it down, and really having it add to the story. All in all another excellent story!

This is my second or third from this aithor and he does not disappoint, yet again. Mystery, intrigue, and the search is on...quick paced, in-depth, and looking forward to exploring Ribbonworld now.

Half the fun in discovering a new sci-fi author is that they really are like the candy in a box of chocolates. Each author presents to us a universe that is unique to them. The Lost Princess is the first Richard Dee novel I've read. The main character, Miles, seems to be rather naive and idealistic. So, of course, journalism is a great career choice for him. Unfortunately, his naivete lands him into some serious trouble while he is out searching for the lost “princess”. As he searches for her, he starts to discover more and more awful things about the world he lives in. The worlds built for this story by Dee are interconnected by a large corporation that, like all totalitarian corporations, tries to exert as much control, over the worlds populations, as it can get away with, aided by a corrupt system of governance. This corruption is evident to me from the beginning of the story. It took Miles some prison time to get to the same conclusion. He is a bit broken toward the end of this part of the story. For some reason, I kept thinking about Animal Farm and 1984 as I read it. This story is part one of a three-part series and ends in a cliffhanger. It will be interesting to see if Miles gets to come on top at the end of the series or if he’s going to allow the system to chew him up and spit him out. Though I don’t think the “princess” is getting the Disney treatment in this series, I do hope she does get rescued from the awfulness she must be living.
