About the author

I write fast-paced action thrillers populated with well-rounded characters.
Born in Addis Ababa in 1960, I spent my first eight years living on an agricultural college in rural Ethiopia where my love of reading developed. After dropping out of university I became a firefighter and served 19 years before leaving to start my own business.
I began writing in 2010 and use my work experiences to add realism to my fiction.
The Mason and Sterling series centre on two ex-Royal Marines, Byron who now runs a security company and Adam who is a firefighter. A strong cast of characters support my protagonists. Long Stop Books published Brotherhood, the first novel in the series, in September 2019 and the second, The Profit Motive, on December 16th 2019. The third, Unprotected, will come out in early 2020. Brotherhood is set in Manchester and The Profit Motive in Manchester and Wenzhou, China.
I live in Manchester, my adopted home since 1984. In my spare time I try to keep fit—an increasingly difficult undertaking—listen to music, socialise and feed my voracious book habit.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe plot of this book gripped me until I finished the book. I didn't care for a few obscenities that were in the dialog, the story was so exciting that I was able to get past them.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2019Format: KindleMy second encounter with David Beckler's Mason and Sterling after reading Forged in Flames a few days before this. Where Forged in Flames related more to Sterling, here our main focus is Mason, with Adam Sterling having a walk on part in the latter part of the book.
Work issues abound. Mason is expanding his company and has perhaps borrowed a little bit recklessly - increasing his staff levels and cost base, before embarking on a lucrative security contract. He won't see any payment from the contract for a little way down the line. In the short term he's in a bit of a hole.
An incident with one of his new recruits on his big job puts immediate pressure on the business. His wife is heavily pregnant - a further worry. His financiers suddenly start playing hard ball. A former soldier from his past puts in a reappearance. His calm and control seems to be deserting him and doubts creep in about his right hand man. Just because you're a bit paranoid, it doesn't mean someone isn't out to get you.
And rest assured someone is out to get him.
Industrial sabotage, blackmail, threats to livelihood, threats to family ........ and a fightback with best friend, Sterling appearing on the scene.
Fast-paced and enjoyable without being the best book ever. I like the main characters and the way they bounce off each other. We get some of their shared history in a flashback to their service days. I quite liked the set-up and development of the plot. There's an inevitability about the outcome, insofar as you expect the duo to come out on top and that balance will be restored to their world and without spoilers that does happen, but it's an entertaining outing getting to that point.
I look forward to seeing this pair again in Brotherhood - the author's first full length novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best free book I've ever downloaded
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was lucky enough to get this book when it was offered for free. In this case, it's definitely not true that you get what you pay for. This book is worth paying for. The characters are well rounded and believable, and the book roars along at a rocking pace. It really is a book you don't want to put down. My only criticism is the end rushes up and the book stops. I would like to have had a final chapter showing the outcome, say, 12 months after the denouement in order to neatly wrap up the position of the characters a while down the line. I had become so involved with them and their story that I felt a bit left hanging, a sort of "and they all lived happily ever after" abruptness. But that doesn't stop me from thoroughly recommending this book as a very exciting read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Action packed
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTakes a little longer to get going than Forged in Flames. But, as soon as it does, the pace is again relentless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Far more than the usual thriller
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBeckler's two new novellas, 'Forged in Flames' and 'The Money Trap' - both excellent stand alone books - together form a perfect introduction to his 'Mason and Sterling' series, launching soon.
Both punch hard from the start, taking the reader along at a cracking pace. 'Forged in Flames' introduces us to Adam Sterling while 'The Money Trap' is based on Byron Mason and the bond between the two men, begun as fellow soldiers. Both have serious difficulties to overcome - journeys that take them through adrenalin-loaded, visceral and violent action. I was drawn in straight away and involved all the way through. Excellently plotted, with closely-drawn characters, they are far more than the usual thriller. Each book balances - on the one hand - desperate fighting with solving who is behind the dangerous situations and why - on the other hand - emotional involvements, romantic entanglements, and issues of trust and justice. All this plus the work of the police alongside Adam's perilous firefighting and Byron's business problems. Totally gripping and finally satisfying reads. I can't wait for the new series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Money talks?.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHaving read "Forged in Flames" ( which by the way can be read in it's own right) I was eager to read the next novella in this pre-sequel series, and I wasn't disappointed. Once again it had me on the edge of my seat,it was a thrilling ride. The story/plot crackled with suspense, excitement and fear. It was interesting with a satisfying twist at the end. We got to know the two main protagonists, the importance of their friendship and how they are able to watch each others back, even when they may not always agree with each other, such is the stuff of friendship. I particularly like the fact that they are ethnically different and I look forward to discovering more about their back- stories in forthcoming books. The ending certainly left me wanting more. Cant wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars A ripping good read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis short novel develops the relationship between ex-marine mates Byron and Adam. This time Byron's in the spotlight and this story pulls no punches. It's full of the action and well-drawn characters we're coming to expect from David Beckler. I'll be reading his next in the Mason and Sterling series
