Tallitha Mouldson is a girl that lives in the very strange and secretive Morrow household. She finds that she is the heir to this menagerie of creatures, rooms, and relatives, and she wants nothing to do with it. This leads her on a search for a more deserving heir in which she finds out about her Great Aunt. Thus the adventure begins. Over, under, and through the most fascinating places Tallitha and her comrades experience intense, gripping and highly nerve racking situations. Put these together with some imaginatively evil creatures and you have a great YA fantasy adventure that you can't put down.

There are many things to admire about Susan McNally’s book, “The Morrow Secrets,” which I picked up last week. First, I love that the protagonist is a strong female character with many dimensions to her personality. That's something sorely lacking in speculative literature and I'm glad to see it addressed in McNally's writing, which addresses this without coming across as heavy-handed. Second, I like that while this book seems especially geared towards YA readers, it has a "certain something" that makes it a good, fun read for everybody. In that sense, it reminds me of the Harry Potter books, though McNally's story and writing style feel unique. I enjoyed the illustrations, as well, and I'm anxious to read more of McNally's work!

There are some very imaginative things in this adventurous story where a girl sets off to find a missing relative. Many things to like, including a big cast of strange creatures and a journey with plenty of thrills. The biggest problem is the uneven writing. Perhaps it simply needs polishing, but more likely the author needs to hone her craft. I'm of the opinion that books for kids need to be held to a higher rather than a lower standard in writing--after all, they're still learning the fine points of language and construction. The second problem is that nothing is resolved by the end--it's simply a cliffhanger for the next installment. That's a bit unfair. It's fine to leave enough to lure us into the next volume, but there should be a satisfying resolution for this story.

Not since Harry Potter have I been unable to put a book down. Talitha is a wonderful heroine, strong, willful and adventurous. I loved the twists and turns in the plot, but it is the world of wild and wonderful creatures that Mcnally conjures that thrill the most. When do you publish the next one?

Get thrown right into this dark and mysterious world full of twists! I was surprised how quickly it jumps into that world, but it just worked for this story. The pace was great for a gothic book and really went into great detail without over doing it. You could get a really good image and the images within the book only enhanced the thoughts you already had.

You go on a journey with Tallitha, and she finds that she is the heir to it all at Morrow. Well she isnt really evil, but she is mean, and has no real structure in life, so yeah....least she is not crazy evil right? She is still a likable character Well this place just can't go to anyone, so she goes to find someone to be the heir. This leads her onto a journey she didn't plan on.

Now I don't read many gothic books or children books. Though after this one, I may start to look into more gothic style books. This was a fun and quick read that anyone could enjoy. I can't wait to start the next book!

Polished and packed with imagination, The Morrow Secrets is a whimsical waltz through an unsettlingly dark world. The reader is plunged straight into the twisted world of the Morrow family and its relatable protagonist Tallitha. There is a hint of the sinister in most of the novel’s quirky characters, creating wonderful colour in the dark and gloomy world of Winderling Spires and beyond. Having read many number of gothic novels in my time, one of the more major complaints usually comes from the slow pace of the story - The Morrow Secrets has no such problem. McNally sculpts her craft well, pushing the pace of the gothic novel to a level that the YA audience will enjoy. Reading it evoked memories of my childhood - macabre stories by Roald Dahl, or perhaps the movies of Tim Burton. There honestly aren’t enough books like this; gothic is a notoriously mature genre, and Morrow Secrets is a perfect stepping stone for young readers interested in darker topics. Its accessibility and charm will leave a lasting impression on the reader, particularly when accompanied by the wonderful illustrations amongst the books pages. I look forward to reading the next installment of Morrow Secrets, and any other works by the author.

Tallitha Mouldson dreams of escaping her domineering Great Aunt and the confines of the east wing of Winderling Spires, a huge sprawling house in a land called Wycham Elva. She longs to explore the rest of the weird old house and uncover its secrets.
Then circumstances give her the chance to not only explore the house, but to go on a quest through dark mysterious places that will test her resolve to its limits.
I loved reading this story, loved Winderling Spires and its cast of dark characters.I also enjoyed the journey to the even darker Hellstone Tors. The plot is good, the characters are great. The world that Susan Mcnally has created is comparable to Tolkiens Middle Earth in its depth and imagination. In fact this could well be Susan Mcnally's 'Hobbit' that I can see leading on to much larger works. Five stars for this book, I do feel the story could have been longer, but that may be because I enjoyed it so much. Also I am not sure about the title, When thinking back to this story I think of Winderling Spires and If I had written it that would have been the title.
You will not want to put this book down and you will not want it to end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Original Story and Characters with a hint of Roald Dahl Darkness

This book had been recommended to me, and I didn't read any reviews or blurb about this book before downloading it.

And I was pleasantly surprised. The plot of a young girl and her brother uncovering a family secret which leads them to embark on a journey was relatively straightforward, but the way it develops, with each clue being cleverly revealed was built well. Well enough for an adult reader to appreciate its subtleties. The twists and turns keep going right up until the last page, meaning that by the end you're really motoring along, hoping to find out what happens next.

The tone is well aimed at it's market of a younger audience, but I sometimes felt that the language could have been more challenging. I also felt that in places it could have flowed better. I also felt that the descriptions of the various inhabitants painted a picture in the mind that didn't necessarily tally up with the illustrations, but having said that, some of the illustrations were wonderful, such as the silhouettes at the top of a staircase.

Initially I found our heroine, Tallitha, to be immature and irritating, feeling that her pouts and tantrums were excessive in a girl her age. Even when introduced to her odd, and often unpleasant, family, I still didn't engage with her as a character. However, the charm of this book is that you see her begin to develop and grow. The other main characters also show more depth than is often found in books aimed at this age range.

In conclusion, I would be curious to see where the trilogy takes me, but it wouldn't be a book I would pre-order. Perhaps more one I would pick up if reminded.
