I don’t do boyfriends. Or dating. Or random hookups.

Not when fictional men do it so much better, and not when my heart has been through the wringer. So when retired MMA fighter Matt Haywood crashes into my life, I’m not impressed. Quite the opposite actually. I avoid him at all costs.

At least, I try.

His persistence wears me down and it’s me who ends up wandering into his gym looking for more. I have to admit he’s nothing like I assumed. He’s witty and smart. His physical condition could win awards. Problem is, somewhere between rolling around on the mats together, I let down my guard.

I thought I was over relationships. That I’d never risk my heart again. But he’s out to prove it’s never too late for a comeback.

I listened to the audio version of this book formerly published as My Undead Heart. This was my first introduction to Kacey Shea and I'm very glad I found her! It was also my first time to hear the dual narration of Stephen Dexter and Virginia Rose. Wow! They were fantastic!
The story of Matt and Mia is not your everyday sports romance. There was a whole lot of stuff in their pasts that really could have ruined their lives. I actually think Matt was the stronger character (no pun intended here, since he was the ex-MMA fighter). He was really pushing the crud life had handed him and forging forward. Mia was more held back by her past and let it form her actions. She was so afraid to let any man control her that she reacted to the smallest incidents, like Matt calling her an Uber to get her home when she was drunk. While in the Uber car, she actually tried to cancel that ride and reorder the same exact car herself.
Even though they had their issues, they were incredible together. Maybe it was just all the incredible hot and funny at the same time portions of the book that Ms. Shea wrote. Boy were they hot! Boy were they funny!
This is actually one of the best books I've listened to for awhile. Loved it! Can't wait for another by Kacey Shea, Stephen Dexter and/or Virginia Rose. Super audiobook!

From the moment they meet, Mia and Matt throw some sparks. She is quite prickly and he is a sweet man behind a hard exterior.

Mia is a hard one to like, but as her story unfolds, what shapes her to be the woman she is become a clear. Hang in there with her!

She is a good friend and a strong woman. He is a man humble a who loves fiercely and cares for others. A former fighter who wants to help others defend themselves. He is a proud but soft man.

I really liked the ending to this story where it all comes together.

    **spoilers in this review**

i love matt. love love love matt. i love male heroes that are badass but sweethearts. and badass he is. so hot. such a sweetheart but a total badass. if i could pull him from the book and make him real i would. he's my ideal kind of man.

then there's Mia. this is my main issue with the book. I get where Mia is coming from with being jaded and coming from an abusive relationship kind of past. i get the being a bit guarded and having walls. but she wasn't just jaded with Matt. she was a straight up bitch. too much. everything was a glare response. everything was a snarky comment. even her best friends. she glared at every single thing they said. she way overreacted to everything. it got tiresome. everyone in Mia's life deserved better than that. I think Mia could be likable if she just dropped the "i hate everyone and everything" act and finally opened up to people and started being nice for once. which she maybe seems to have realized and started the path to by the end but not having her interact with more people it's hard to tell. I feel like her bad attitude caused more drama than was necessary. I wouldn't put up with it. friend or otherwise. It made the story hard to push through. by the end i was struggling but pushing through just to see the ending for Matt, Xavier and Chantel.

the dialog tags got to be a bit much. too many "he said, she said" tags and things like that. also every smile and every grin was "pulled". there's a lot of smiles and grins. a lot of "pulling". gets hard to read.

there were a lot of loose ends. what happens with Nikki? What about Victoria and why is she still friends with them when she talked crap about them in front of Mia? what about that stalker coworker? why was he mentioned if nothing came of him and his creepo self?

the sex scenes were steamy and passionate so that was nice.

i'm glad we finally learned the story of matt and applaud the domestic violence and rape awareness. Again, i love matt. he is one of my fav male leads i've ever read.

Overall the book was good but i wouldn't continue any further with this author or if it became a series. I enjoyed the time i got to spend with Matt, Xavier and Chantel (i love Jared too) and that is what i will take with me when i archive this book.

This book was an entertaining read. It had heart, a bit of angst, sweetness, and snark. Matt and Mia are a great couple. Matt is a retired MMA fighter who owns a gym in Chicago that has fallen on some rough times financially. To try and make ends meet and keep his gym from closing, he has to find some part time jobs. He’s training an up and coming fighter but works as a bouncer at a bar which is where he meets Mia. Mia is a huge nerd who loves zombies. Unfortunately, the day of the event she has been looking forward to becomes a major bust and she ends up at the bar Matt works at. Matt is immediately attracted to her even with her face painted up to look like a zombie but Mia rejects him with her usual snark. Matt offers to teach her some self defense after she and her friend are harassed and assaulted by a drunk. Matt is actually a sweet guy. He’s drawn to Mia despite her being prickly and anti-relationships. He wears down her defenses and gets her to see him in a different light. Mia’s best friend Jared is a hoot. He makes you laugh while wishing that you had a best friend like him. There are moments of angst because both Mia and Matt had to deal with rough pasts but you end up rooting for them. There is some heat in their love scenes. This was a very enjoyable read.

This is a great opposites-attract kind of read! I really enjoyed how dimensional the characters are and the slow burn of their romance. For Matt and Mia they couldn't be more different or more stubborn about those differences and yet that makes the attraction between all the more real. They pushed each other and at the same time are the perfect compliment in each other's lives as well. I liked how Mia stood up for herself and is proud of who she is and all that she's accomplished between being a video game designer and zombie aficionado. Matt is the same with his ambition to own a successful gym and his drive to achieve UFC status for one of his fighters. They're both passionate about what they do and who they are that makes their journey to love even more sweet. Really enjoyed this read and plan to read much more from this author.

Hidden depths abound for the characters in this story. Highly emotional undertones weave their way through an emotive story.
There are varying degrees of abuse, but the one thing they have in common is that no one has the right to inflict it on someone, whether it’s controlling behaviour, emotional blackmail or violence.
Kacey covers a few of these with this compassionate comeback.
Read it and discover them for yourself.

His life has never been easy, but could he wish to finally have all that he ever wanted or will it all be snatched away just as he finally has hope.

She is not willing to compromise nor change who she is. But he likes her just as she is, she just needs to open her heart & realise that she is lovable.

Very slow to start and gotta say that a 34 year old female acting like an immature teenager was hard to take. Thank goodness it got better but I’ve pushed it to tea three reluctantly. Not the best by this author who usually has me ensnared quickly.
