SHORTLISTED FOR THE ADULT FICTION PRIZE: THE SELFIE BOOK AWARDS 2023

A single phone call can destroy your life.
Joey Clarke has been responsible for his family since he was just fifteen. Ten years on, his only pleasure is spending time with bubbly Becca, his best friend… and the secret love of his life. She’s his only escape from a dead-end job, ever-increasing debts and the fear that enforcement agents will knock on the front door any day.

So when a phone call brings Joey the chance to ease his family’s financial burdens, he grabs the opportunity — even though the bags he’s delivering seem suspicious. What he doesn’t know can’t hurt him, right?

But Joey soon finds himself party to a crime that turns Becca’s life upside down, and he panics.

Should he confess to the police? Tell Becca? Or keep quiet and hope for the best? After all, the only woman who knows the truth may never speak again…

A psychological suspense thriller, full of
twists and turns, perfect for readers of Lisa Jewell, Frieda McFadden, Shari Lapena, Adele Parks, Miranda Rijks, Jackie Kabler, Lucy Foley, Sally Hepworth, and Daniel Hurst.

This book kept me on the edge and I couldn’t read it fast enough. I could feel Joey’s anxiety in the way each scene played out. He was a young man with a lot of responsibility for his family and trying to do his best to support them. I felt so bad for him as he ended up in one bad situation after another. The book is fast paced and exciting with a very satisfying ending.

I read a lot of psychological thrillers and although I've never read this author, I can say this is one of the better UK thrillers I've read this year. It accurately depicts how many families are struggling financially right now. and makes the motives of the main character Joey understandable given his situation. I won't go into plot details here, you can get that from the blurb, but its an interesting tale on how quickly lies can spiral out of control. The story kept my attention throughout, and I read it in a day which is the best compliment I can give any author.

It's a fun read, and for 99 cents this was a steal. I'll definitely look into the author's other books.

Middle of the road plot and way too tidy at the end. I desperately hoped for deep dark secrets but this is really more romance novel than thriller.

This book was filled with dark secrets, deceit, suspense and romance. It shows how greed and power can ruin lives. It also has some sad and shocking events that alters the lives of many. It wasn’t one of my favorite books but very entertaining. I didn’t like the author using God’s name in vain. There’s never a good reason for that. It certainly doesn’t make the book better if anything it makes me not want to read anything else written by them. But that’s my opinion and you have yours.

Enjoyed reading this thriller! Felt sorry for Joey as he had a good heart and intentions, but not much luck. He was also a great son to his mom and thoughtful brother to his siblings. Lots of twist and turns which had me trying to tell him no!! Lol highly recommend!

The Phone Call is told from the perspective of Joey (My son is Joey so I love the name already!) Joey is a voung man that is working super hard to provide for his family. His dad is deceased, his mother has health issues and he has two younger siblings, Dylan and Megan. He works a dead end job at a supermarket and is struggling financially to keep everything afloat. He receives a phone call that will change his life. From there, the book is filled with incredible twists and turns, I found myself willing Joey to do something different. The biggest question is what would you be willing to do to protect your family?
This book was awesome. The plot was fantastic and intriguing. I had a hard time putting down my phone to do the things I had to do. I really loved the characters, especially Joey! Campbell's writing style is perfection, I could feel all of Joevs emotions! The chapters were the perfect length!

I was invested in the character of Joey straight away and wanted to know how he got out of the situation he found himself in. AJ writes so convincingly I had to remind myself it was a story as it was so believable.

You have to know! Anxiety provoking, will Joey get away with it or not or will someone else mess it up for him. Realistic characters in sticky situations. Enjoyable with satisfying twists and conclusions.
