The Plan: a fake dating sports romance (Washington Wolves: Next Gen) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 6,706 ratings

Have you ever fake dated your bodyguard? I highly recommend it.

Especially if he's anything like Erik Wilder: former football player, world class know-it-all and unrepentant grump.

Trust me, I know how that sounds. Despite all that, this man ticks every single box I want ... ticked.

From the outside, I get why we wouldn't make any sense. He’s suspicious, never talks about his past and has the comfort skills of a cactus. I’m a happily-ever-after kind of girl who knows exactly what she wants out of life. We're not oil and water—more like Erik is the fire and I'm a can of gasoline he wants at a safe distance.

All it takes is one touch, and I want all the heat he can give me. And I'm not the only one holding a match, even if he won't admit it.

Erik's words might say that the lines have to stay firm between us, but those dark eyes of his? They tell another story when he looks at me.

When our fake dating plan starts to heat up, it's only a matter of time before that line between us is reduced to ash. I just have to hope my heart doesn't burn right along with it.

binge-able slow burn, body guard, age gap romance

binge-able slow burn, body guard, age gap romance
I knew I would love Lydia’s story and I was so, so right. Lydia is recovering from a serious paparazzi caused car accident at her parents house (who we already know and love from The Bombshell Effect). She doesn’t really feel like herself, is having anxiety attacks and is apprehensive to leave the house. Her family decides to hire a bodyguard to help her ease back in to normal life. But Erik isn’t your typical bodyguard. He is a broody former NFL player whose career ended suddenly and no one really knows why. Their relationship should remain strictly professional, but Lydia is too sweet and Erik can’t help but warm up to her. Erik is as protective as he is grumpy, and Lydia is as sassy as she is smart. He helps steady her through the rough times and when roles are reversed she is his rock. And boy do the roles reverse when she travels home with him to spend time with his family and learns his secrets along the way. Lydia derserves the world, she’s one of my favorite heroines ever. The slow burn tension between these two is off the charts good, add in an age gap and a little fake dating and you get a completely binge worthy romance. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5

Thoughts: There were so many new characters introduced in this book! It seems like a new chapter for Karla Sorensen, even though it’s the second book in a next gen series. All the new characters allow for a bigger world than just the Washington Wolves and I loved it.

Erik is the oldest Wilder and has a lot of baggage. He retired from football after an injury he could have come back from and the reason isn’t revealed, in full, until the very end. He struggled to accept his feelings for Lydia. She was young, a little wild, and his complete opposite, but she was his perfect match.

Lydia was such a fun character. She was struggling with her own demons and the change one moment had made in her life. She strove to be better and to make her dreams happen, and that included the faceless man of her dreams being Erik. Lydia fought hard for Erik. She charmed his family and fit right in. But Erik had to choose her too and it took him a little longer to understand that he couldn’t just keep running from the things that scared him.

Retired NFL player Erik is working as a bodyguard. After being injured in a paparazzi car chase, Lydia needs protection. She's suffering from PTSD and he has her back. During the first half of the book, you admire and like Erik for his perceptiveness about the sources of Lydia's fears and how he helps her regain confidence. In the second half of the book, feelings ignite between the two and Erik becomes the one who's running scared. There's an age gap (8 years) and a wealth gap (she's from a very wealthy family). A hyper responsible character, Erik feels both guilty for his previous divorce and frightened about risking his heart. The slow burn and Erik's willingness to confront his emotions are both kind of drawn out.

Ms. Sorensen has crafted a good story that combines several fan-favorite tropes (older man/much younger woman, falling for the bodyguard, and fake dating), decent characters whose behaviors stay true to their mindsets, and an easy-to-read narrative.

One thing with this author (and/or her editor) that I see in most of her novels and that is driving me nuts is her confusion of the words clamor (describing SOUND) and clamber (describing MOTION)! Photographers do NOT "clamor" all over each other to get the best angle - they CLAMBER. Or better, they "push, shove and elbow" each other. Audiences CLAMOR for one more encore, or, better, they "scream and shout" for that encore.

Anyway, obviously, she keeps hitting a nerve, and that's just me.

Read the novel (and series). If you are a contemporary/sports romance fan, you will enjoy it!

“Welcome to the other side of the Washington Wolves—where the women reign supreme, and they will never make things easy for someone telling them what to do.”

All I’ve got to say is that this bodyguard romance made me incredibly happy! Give me a grumpy, protective hero and a ray of sunshine heroine and I am a smiling fool! The banter and sexual tension in this book was EVERYTHING! Lydia was a spitfire and I loved how she pushed every one of Erik’s buttons. That man was not going to be able to resist her no matter how hard he tried, she was the perfect sunshine to his extra grumpy ways. When that sexual tension finally snapped between them boy was it HOT, Erik wasn’t going to let Lydia be unsatisfied after making her wait to feel’s his lips all over her.

“The only woman who dared to push me out of my strictly defined comfort zone would be there every step of the way as we descended into lust-fueled madness.”

After surviving a paparazzi caused car crash, Lydia’s anxiety and fear were ruling her life and causing her to become a home body, the complete opposite to her social media persona. So when Erik was hired to be her personal driver and bodyguard she was none too happy, but his bulging biceps and sexy bearded scruff made the hardship a little less daunting. I loved watching how kind, caring and attentive Erik was in knowing just what Lydia needed to come back to herself, even if he was reluctant to open his heart to her relentless pestering. When the fake dating situation arose, it created the perfect opportunity for Lydia to prove to Erik that he needed her wild heart just as much as she needed him. Dare I say this is my new favorite book from Karla! Absolutely LOVING this second generation series!

“You’ve already wrecked me in the best possible way. I’m willing to risk any hurt, if it means I can have you in my life.”

Erik is truly a grumpy hereos. Not really talkative. With Lydia, the daughter of Luke and Allie Pierson, he meets a strong and stubborn woman, despite the fact that she has a form of PSTD following a car accident.
    I loved it.

This is one of the best sports romances I have read. Erik was a sports man until an injury took him out of the game and he was asked by his old team to act as a bodyguard for his daughter. Lydia had been followed by the paparazzi and ended up crashing her car and breaking her arm. She started to get nervous around everybody and Erik even with his grumpiness and lack of words looked after her. She wanted to get to know him and managed to push his buttons. He was starting to fall for her until he put the breaks on. Lydia eventually gets to know about things that truly hurt him and why he kept everyone at a distance. I hope we get more books in this series.

I love this story. These two have a bit of a different start in their relationship. He stays as her bodyguard to get her out of the house after an accident. She knows there is something about him that she can't figure out, but she's determined to get to know him.
I love that they had their time, and it caused their family to get back together as a family, even though he was an a** before it could happen.
