- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2021Author Diane K. Yorke writes children’s book – and also illustrates them! Her current series is the Puggy Tall Tales – to date nine Pug stories and THE PUG AND THE REINDEER is the current entry.
Perley the Pug is in bed on Christmas Eve, and in Diane’s fun rhyming pattern we read, ‘It was the night before Christmas and Perley was in bed – dreams of Christmas presents were swirling around in her head.’ A knock on her window reveals a reindeer pulling a sleigh, asking Perley for help. Rudy, the reindeer’s name, shares he has a problem flying high and asks Perley to join him in the sleigh. During their rather slow ride Rudy asks Perley what her favorite part of Christmas is, to which Perley replies “Presents!” – and that response makes the sleigh fall to the ground. Rudy explains, that the magic that speeds the sleigh relies on the Spirit of Christmas – ‘of giving, not just presents, but what’s in your heart.’ The sleigh needs work, and an elf appears, ready to fix the sleigh – and in Perley’s new understanding of Christmas, she offers to help – a gift that allows the magic sleigh to sail on to make Christmas happen. Perley, enlightened, shares her new perception with her proud parents. ’For helping others, giving time or just being here with a smile – these are the everyday gifts that make our lives worthwhile.’
Fine story, great illustrations, and an excellent message about the true spirit of Christmas – this little book has it all! A perfect gift for children – and sensitive adults! Grady Harp, November 21
