The Quarter Mage Kindle Edition
Book #1 in the spellbinding QUARTER MAGE series from award-winning, bestselling author Angelina J. Steffort.
“Hasn’t anyone told you there are all sorts of wicked creatures roaming the fairylands?”
Princess Sanja never asked for a crown—or a cage. When she escapes an arranged marriage to a brutal lord, her only goal is freedom—until betrayal shatters her escape and death comes for her on royal orders.
Saved by forbidden magic thought lost to time, Sanja is dragged back from the brink—into a realm that wants her dead. While her husband believes her buried and gone, she’s thrust into the cruel, glittering fairylands, where humans are hunted for sport and mercy is a myth.
To survive, she binds herself to the a group of Mages and falls under the watch of Tristan: cold, powerful, and maddeningly beautiful—and the only thing more dangerous than the enemies hunting her is the growing pull between them.
As Sanja’s magic grows, so does her hunger for answers—and for the man who guards his secrets almost as closely as his heart. But in a realm where love is a weapon and being human is a curse, trusting the wrong person could cost her everything.
Perfect for readers who crave sharp-tongued, flawed heroines, dangerously powerful heroes, and slow-burning enemies-to-lovers tension—THE QUARTER MAGE is a haunting tale of love, betrayal, and magic that exacts a price in blood.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe story follows Sanja Zetareh Lazar, a princess who tries to run away from a fate she doesn’t want to partake in. In her escape, she finds a bigger monster that will threaten to destroy everything she loves and has known.
Sanja is definitely a princess character. When she’s running away from the princess's life the challenges and changes she’s going through are hilarious. I loved the fact she was thinking about her princess's life and how she would be served and how she would be the one giving orders not the other way around. She has been a badass from the very first moment when she decided to run away from the fate her dad imposed on her and has grown so much more ever since. I really loved her change and how many things she has learned.
Tristan at first I thought he might be one of those morally grey characters with a dark past trying to redeem himself, but Tristan has a sad story and all he knows is how to survive and stay away as much as possible from the Fae’s path. I enjoyed the fact he was so hardheaded but slowly opened up to Sanja and he was the first one to share his feelings.
Prince Recienne is definitely a morally grey character. He’s ruthless and such a horrible person but for some reason, he helped Sanja all along – even tho he treated her horribly. I’m definitely interested in what turn his story will take because he has made me feel so confused and have such big contradictory feelings.
There are of course other characters in the story that have some sort of control over where the story goes and an impact but they had their appearance brief – minus the king, he was one of those despicable characters that I cheered when he got what he deserved.
The world-building is definitely amazing. The opulence the fae have, the way they’re delimited by the length of their name, and how so many of them were ruthless and so horrible even tho they were so, so beautiful that were making the people to be attracted to them like moths to light. The world the fae lived in was also very interesting, their food was mouthwatering and the overall description of their world was beautiful.
The magic system for the mages was definitely something new for me. They would store their power into some mage stones, and the more they would use the less magic they would have, but I loved they had so many opportunities to earn more magic, and the way they used it sometimes was mind-blown. Who would love to put food on the table with a flick of a finger?
The pace of the story was definitely great, not too slow not too fast. You got the perfect amount of information when needed, the story was shown to us instead of told which I like the best when comes to stories, and even tho you had only one pov in the story, following Sanja in her adventures was definitely amazing and I’m excited for what’s yet to come into their story. I enjoyed how the relationship between Sanja and Tristan developed, it came naturally.
The book has spice in it but is not overly detailed or too smutty, I’d catalog the spice in it perhaps at 3 flame peppers considering there is some use of words and some more spicy moments – the sexual tension is perfectly made and the way things develop was smooth.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really liked this story it has a young woman running from an arranged marriage to a tryrant but is found and dragged back by her father's soldiers and was wed the same day. But things go from bad to worse for her and she once again is on the run through lands of dangerous fairies and monsters. She has a few possessions and jewelry to trade but a bandit finds her and robs her of it all but does promise too guide her to a town. She's swept up into a world she has no idea existed and finds herself amongst mage's who are trying to help her adjust and learn a skill. She finds Tristan and they start being attracted to each other but once again she's found but this time she's a treat for fairies.
* only thing that I didn't like was how many times she did stupid things because she didn't listen
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBorn into a world of privilege, Princess Sanja finds herself betrothed to a horrifying man bent on controlling her father's kingdom. But when a final betrayal sends her on the run from a husband she never wanted, she finds herself revealing too much to a bandit she meets on her way to the fairylands, a place where humans become playthings and so much worse. Yet, she's saved by Tristan, one of the mages who has found a way to exist in the fairylands, and so begins her training. As she navigates her way through a magical kingdom, she discovers that she might have a little magic of her own. When she faces a more powerful and tyrannical fairy king and a mysterious fairy prince, she doesn't know whom she can depend on, where the path she must follow will lead, or if she and her little mage family will survive.
I expect a brilliant high fantasy every time I open one of this author's books, and I have yet to be disappointed. She is a marvelous weaver of tales that lead in directions we never saw coming, and I am never ready for the stories to end. I cannot wait to read the next one in this series.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe story was interesting and not always believable. It was fun to read and understand the the author's storyline. I enjoyed the main characters and the trials and tribulations they had to go through.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBottomline: 562 pages and I was sorry when it ended. The story begins with Sanja’s attempt to escape her arranged marriage to a cruel tyrant. Her father has bartered his daughter to this horrible person for what he thinks will be his benefit. Most of the story takes place after Sanja has arrived in the Fae kingdom where being human makes you prey. She is rescued from the streets and taken into the protection of a Mage and placed into training to become a mage herself. That is all that I will tell you about the plot, because it is best to let everything unfold as intended by the author. I liked the characters, the world-building, and the magic. There are strong women, brave heroes/heroines, frightening adversaries, and a few interesting characters that neither Sanja nor the reader know whether to trust. The pacing is brisk, and the pages turn quickly. The romance is romantic, but chaste. The violence level is high in a few places. There are plenty of twists and turns. The story will continue in the next book, but, sadly, that book will not be published until February. I am looking forward to reading it. I bought this book on a Kindle deal so the ratio of price to entertainment value was excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not bad
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book was good, the characters were good, growing throughout the book. The storyline was engaging but it didn't grip me by the throat. But I would recommend this book and author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy across the worlds
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDeep dive into the adventure of Sanja. It is slow to start but once the story gets going, it is hard to put the book down. I have finished the 4 novels in the series in a week!
Cleverly written with a misdirect in the love interest. Book 2 is my favourite as you get a better feel for the characters and where the story may lead.
No unnecessary drama or twists. Instead, a cleverly designed plot with depth of character and a deeper underlying story than what is at first obviously seen at first.
Congratulations Angelina on another success.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bit to get into but worth the ride
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEven though I found it slow to start (and in some spots thourought the series) the character development was worth the investment. I debated buying book 1 then book 2 but here I am after book 4 thinking now what. It's over. Hopefully my next read fills the hole this great read has left.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great storyline
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed the plot and how strong Sanja was throughout. I also enjoyed the romance build up, although the Fairy Prince seemed lusciously attractive and powerful to me! Only criticism would be that her trials and pain were pretty relentless. I yearned for a month of massages and beautiful and benign surroundings amid the fear... for relief and contrast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never disappoints
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOnce again this is an excellent read, the author never fails to
Keep my attention with all the twist and turns.
