Northumberland, 1470s.
Ambitious reiver Will Hetherington wants to prove himself a competent man in the company of Robert Mathers, head of the village.
Headstrong Meg Mathers, Robert’s younger sister, wants to remain at her beloved home, caring for her family, the land and the village of Long Ridge where she’s grown up.

When tragedy strikes, can Meg and Will find their way back to each other, and can Will finally take his own personal revenge on Gray?
“…[Will] is a marvellous example of what a historical romance hero should be… The Raided Heart is a wonderfully tender romance set within a backdrop of hostility and questionable allegiances.” –Winner of the Bronze Prize for Historical Romance, in the Coffee Pot Book Club Book of the Year Award, 2019.
"A delicious mix of historical action and romance."
"Exciting, passionate and ultimately the ending keeps the spirit of true love alive."

About the authors
Jennifer has been stalking dead monarchs since she was a child. It started with Mary, Queen of Scots, then moved onto Richard III. At least now it results in a story!
She won North Tyneside Libraries' Story Tyne short story competition in 2014 (no dead monarchs, but still not a cheerful read), and has been filling notebooks and hard-drives ever since. Her Kindred Spirits series, following the 'lives' of some very interesting ghostly communities, is published by Darkstroke, and her historical romances by Ocelot Press.
Jennifer is currently exploring some new ideas for historical romance, and hoping to visit Kindred Spirit friends old and new, north of the border...

- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2020"The Raided Heart" is a beautifully written story that you'll be hard-pressed to put down. Set in a Lorna Doone-esque era, it's both exciting and realistic, with a heroine worthy of the reader's support. Five stars!

A forbidden love that could potentially lead to their demise.
The Raided Heart, the first book in the Historic Hearts series turned out a fast-paced, action-packed glorious historical romance that kept me in thrall the entire time and wouldn’t let go once I got into the story.
I don’t normally see myself as a big romance reader but I have always liked reading historical romance. As opposed to contemporary romance where characters are free to fall in love with whoever they fancy (basically), there’s always some underlying themes such as “practical constraints and differences in social ranks ” in historical romances that pretty much set up the stage for the story.
This book, The Raided Heart, is no exception. Meg, the heroine of the story and the youngest sibling of a reiving family (the effective matriarch of the family) falls in love with a raider but there is no way they can be together. There’s a huge gap in their social ranks and they have to be content with stolen kisses and secret glances exchanged in fleeting moments.
Meg was convinced that she would remain at her childhood home in Long Ridge for the rest of her life, but the volatile situations and circumstances of her time throw a curveball at her, and before she knew it, she is almost forced to marry the eldest son of a tyrannical Alexander Grey of Cliffside. Life on the border has become increasingly challenging and they are in dire need of the protection provided upon allegiance with Cliffside as Alexander Grey has become more and more powerful each day. Meg, of course, vehemently voices her objection but there is no other way but to agree on the betrothal to ensure everyone she cares about are safe and sound.
Now, my heart broke when Meg was technically married off to Cliffside. Meg’s heart belongs to Will and Will’s to Meg. They both adore and love one another but the situation doesn’t allow their love to be acknowledged. My heartache became more acute as both Meg and Will try to make the best of the time left before the marriage, telling themselves the safety and survival is of more significance than their tears and heartaches. The typical forbidden love scenario, but I would maintain this was what truly captivated me and wouldn’t release me till the end.
The romance itself is mellow and sweet, but as if it wasn’t enthralling enough, the author threw in the menace radiating from Alexander Grey here and there to showcase what atrocity Alexander is actually capable of, what a cold-blooded tyrant he actually is.
As the Grey gain power, fewer and fewer people voice their protest against him, and the retribution towards those who did had a chilling effect enough to make my blood run cold. Small wonder neither Meg or Will is willing to risk their life by declaring their love. With ever-present danger that could befall either, or both on Meg and Will, the tension was ramped up higher and higher as the story developed.
Short chapters helped to keep the forward momentum of the story and made it easier to pick up and put down at the same time which I’m sure will come in handy when you have to read this on the go.
That said though, I recommend you set aside some of your time to sit down and focus on this book. I absolutely enjoyed reading this thrilling, fast-paced, and beautiful historical romance, but I must point out that I did struggle to get my bearings in the story especially in early part of the book. I kind of failed to visualize the big picture regarding the territorial feud and power dynamics among Cliffside, Long Bridge, and the Elliot, and I had to read the first 20% twice to get things right.
In addition to that, I found the early part of the book a tad underdeveloped or move too quickly, and I didn’t feel as much strong an emotional pull as I had anticipated.
Nevertheless, as I mentioned earlier, I got totally invested in the story once the “forbidden love” twist was thrown in. From that point onwards, the pacing and the execution is spot-on, and I was flipping through the pages eager to know where Meg and Will end up and whatever would become of them.
The dramatic effects in the end wrapped up the story nicely and neatly, and I must say this book turned out much better than I had originally expected.
If you enjoy historical fiction set in volatile, turbulent times and don’t mind some romance thrown in the mix, this book is certainly for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2020The Raided Heart is a historical fiction set on the borders of England and Scotland in the fifteenth century. Between the amazingly researched historical details, compelling characters, and beautiful writing, I was immersed into life during this period of history.
The forbidden romance aspect of this novel was really well written. I feel like this is a trope that can fail easily, but Jennifer Wilson knows how to write the spark between these two characters, build the romance, and show the danger of the relationship. I love the constant drama in this.
The Raided Heart is suspenseful. Meg is in a dangerous predicament, and as a reader, I was constantly worried about her. I love the passion and turbulance. This is the kind of story that makes me love this genre.
If you’re a fan of well-researched historical fiction, forbidden love, compelling characters, and strong writing, The Raided Heart is the book for you. Check it out!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2019The Raided Heart is a beautiful and emotional historical saga!
Meg is the youngest child of a reiving family. She has taken the place as the matriarch since her mother’s death. She is a strong woman who is protective of her family and the land she has grown up on. One night when her brothers and their band of reivers return, Meg sprains her ankle, and her brothers make young Will care for her since they blame him for the accident.
Will is pretty resentful and doesn’t want to be stuck taking care of a woman. However, as the two spend more time together, this unlikely pair fall deeply in love. That happiness doesn’t last long as Meg is promised to marry Alexander Gray, a neighbor. This is when the novel gets very emotional. Gray is a terrible person, and I’m putting that mildly! He epitomizes the meaning of a villian.
Meg has to endure a great deal living with him. Despite their separation, Meg and Will’s love doesn’t fade. It somehow grows stronger. They are in a race to find a way to find their HEA despite the danger that may pose to both of them.
The book is a beautiful love story yet it is also an adventure. The author goes into detail with the raids and really puts the reader into the story. It is also filled with intrigue because Gray and Will share a connection because of their past.
If you are looking for a book that is a breath-taking romance and adventure, you can’t go wrong with this historical fiction book! Looking forward to more in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, realistic romance with dark undertones...
I must admit I know very little about the border between England and Scotland, and I feel I learnt much when I read this riveting story. Set in the 15th century, Ms Wilson really shows her in-depth knowledge of the era. The terminology suits the time and setting, and the reiver practices are well described.
We meet Meg Mathers early on as a headstrong, slightly spoilt young woman. When she is kicked by Will Hetherington's horse, she blames him, although the fault was hers, so he must support her as long as she is unable to walk. This provides ample time for the two of them to get to know each other. There is some subtle humour that shines through now and then, but all is set against the uncertain backdrop of the day – with nightly raids on other villages, on both sides of the border, regular and dangerous occurrences. These dangers make for a strong undercurrent that remains in place throughout the novel.
Despite Meg and Will falling in love, they know they cannot be together. Will appeared in their village to stay with his sister and her husband, and has nothing of value to offer her. So when her brothers arrange her marriage to the son of their new ally, a brutal but influential reiver called Alexander Gray, they are distraught but resigned to their reality. But when Gray's wife suddenly dies before the marriage, seemingly of an accident, Meg finds it hard to come to terms with her new fate...to wed scheming Gray himself.
The story carries a sense of tension throughout, and despite some light-hearted moments, Ms Wilson keeps readers in no doubt about the daily dangers people faced. There is plenty of conflict, external as well as internal, to occupy the main characters, and the fast pace leads to a gripping ending.
A beautiful, realistic romance with dark undertones, The Raided Heart is one of those books you find hard to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable tale!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story, set in an era I love learning about. Border reiving was a way of life and a hard one, at that. For a woman to be efficient and reliable, at times of turmoil, must have made life easier for the men of the keep, or house, or estate.. and Meg is a very capable lass. Till a little hitch happens and things turn about. I could feel her frustration when she was unable to get on with her normal day. Will, on the other hand, has more than waiting on a lass on his mind... I loved the setting and the fact that love triumphs.
No spoilers here - but nasty characters like Alexander G aren't my favourites. ;-)

4.0 out of 5 stars A delicious mix of historical action and romance
It was a pleasure to read this tale of family loyalty, power struggles and romance. There are some deliciously evil characters here, as well as a feisty heroine you are driven to cheer for right through the book.
Choosing the 15th century as a setting is a brave move, but it works well especially in using the fascinating background of the Border Reivers, who will be familiar to those of us that live in the north of England. The descriptions provide a clear picture of the surroundings and I liked the short chapters that conveyed movement through the narrative. Very enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book.
This is my first Jennifer Wilson book. Loved it. Liked the short chapters and the way it was easy to follow who was talking.
I would have liked Alexander Gray to have had more of a back story, perhaps more detail? Liked the descriptions of setting and detail of buildings and how they all worked together. It was an easy read and I wondered if it was intense enough for me! Having said that it was a page turner and I read it all in a day and a half. AND have ordered three of her other books! Says it all really.!
