"Quite possibly your next favourite fantasy author." - Gareth L. Powell
How Do You Kill A God?
Anya longs to be a warrior like her grandmother, the legendary witch-warrior of the Shaanti, and is ready to defy her grandfather's last wishes and take the ink. With her village captured and best friend killed by the invading Kurah, Anya must defeat them before the rest of the Shaanti fall. But the Kurah have a secret weapon: an exiled Shaanti god in search of revenge.
Escaping to the Rift Forest, Anya must rely on her reluctant ally, Vedic, to find her way through the woods and free the goddess of her people. But what is Vedic keeping from her? How can Anya unite the forest and the Shaanti against their common foe? And with the fate of the world in her hands, just how far is she prepared to go to defeat her enemies?
Anya is about to discover that the line between hero and villain is a knife-edge.

About the author

Neil Beynon is a fantasy short story writer and novelist.
Neil has been writing since he could hold a pen, publishing for over ten years and still has most of his own hair. He has been previously published in a number of small press outlets. Neil has lived all over the place including London, Bradford and Somalia but is now settled in his native South Wales where he spends his time running after small children (his own) and endlessly toying with the idea of retiring to a fishing boat.
His first two fantasy novels, The Scarred God and The Alaunt, are both out NOW from Hanesyn Press.

Beynon as written full story weaving the characters and the history together to give you complete an satisfying read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA little hard to get into at first but ended up being a very full adventure. I expected it to be broken up into more books I had to pay for but in fact it was all in one book. Easier to get lost in like a deep dark movie.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHow do you kill a god when belief and dark magic imbues them with seemingly unstoppable power? Through wonderful world building and character development Neil spends a good portion of the book lining up the dominoes and when they fall at the end it’s spectacular. 17 year old Anya struggles with self doubt and doing what’s right while the man protecting her wishes he was anywhere else. I enjoyed the fight scenes and the inner turmoil each character faced throughout the book. Neil blends myth, magic and God’s together in a refreshing way. A few loose threads leave me hoping to see more of this world in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Scarred God sets a stage for a detailed, epic series. In this book we meet a young warrior woman thrust into battle against her people’s greatest enemies, people she’s never heard of, and the gods. She is haunted by the stories of her family’s legacy and those ages lost along the way.
There are a multitude of characters introduced throughout the book, many with intricate and intriguing backstories. Because of this, though, some of their development felt rushed. Fictional titles, mythology mashups, and new species to encounter made following some of the interwoven plots challenging. The text could easily have elicited another 100 pages and perhaps even a second title.
I do enjoy a story that does not feel compelled to wrap everything up in a neat little bow, though. That is certainly the case here. I’m very curious and interested to see what, if anything, comes next.
If you like a fantasy read that will keep you on your toes and you won’t figure out before the end, I would definitely recommend this book. It was a quick read too, great to unwind with!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOkay, I will openly admit that I have a love-hate relationship with this book and so you don't have to read my entire review before getting to my ultimate thoughts, here is what I thought of this book.
The plot line worked for me, but I wasn't hooked by the book because I felt a lot of details were missing or underplayed. The characters never really "bonded" and I never really "bonded" with them. They would be definitely considered acquaintances that I might never speak to again. Long story short...I loved the plot/main idea behind the book, but I didn't care for the lack of detail. It was similar to having a main course with no sides and no seasonings.
I loved the "bones" of the story. The plot moved at a nice pace for the most part; although in some key "situations" things happened entirely too quick for me and left me slightly confused.
What I hated about this book was the utter lack of details - and before I get jumped, yes, the book did have enough details so it flowed. However, it left out WAY too many details for the story to be gripping for me. The back stories for the 99% of the characters in largely unknown until the very end, which frankly annoyed me. Even by the end of the book, you only knew enough of the back stories to connect the dots, which again annoyed me.
In my opinion, this book would have been amazing if the details were there. Tell me more about the back stories of the characters and tell me LONG before you did, build the relationships between the characters, build the setting. Give me the details so that I can feel like I know these characters like I know my dearest friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEnjoyed the storyline and the way the author weaved in the different aspects of the story. Hope to see more stories related to these characters/origins
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2020Format: KindleThis was an original world filled with original characters.. I hope itojust the first in a series that will take me further into the story of Anya and the gods. The writing is compelling and the characters are engaging.

4.0 out of 5 stars Have faith and you will enjoy!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI am no longer a natural fan of fantasy books I struggle with most I have tried in recent years. Here at the start was the same for me with this book I struggled to get into this world and was left confused and unsure of what was where. Then it started to come together and I realised that the setting of sudden and deadly war bolstered by supernatural godly forces in some part only available via the faith of the people of this world was exactly how I feeling...I began to have faith in the writer and his story and consequently the characters came alive and I was invested in their quests physical, moral and spiritual. I recommend this book but hope you don't necessarily have to have the same struggle in getting to like it yourself!

4.0 out of 5 stars What happens to the gods left behind?
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat happens to the gods left behind? The ones left when the new ones come and the people believe in other things? The Scarred God follows Anya, who is forced to commit acts she never believed she could, to defend her village and its people. She seeks to avenge them, but becomes involved in a saga that is much bigger than she is and the fate of her gods lies in her hands.
The story is rich and the setting is interesting, although it takes a while to get going. Once you are into the tale itself, the mythology is well thought out and represents the different aspects of the faiths well. The different points of view voices work well and it is easy to become invested in them and their tales.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseNot normally the type of book I would read but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed it. It was quite graphic at times and I could just imagine it made into a film or tv sereies. Some twists and turns and after each chapter left you wanting to know what was going to happen next. Would definitely recommend it.
