The Schoolmaster's Spy (Winsford Green Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 230 ratings

With Bonaparte defeated, King’s spy, Captain Mark Dexter is furious at being sent to investigate the latest headmaster of his old school rather than a smuggling ring on the south coast. Things look up considerably when he realises that the schoolmaster he admired above all others, Felix Brook, is still there. The man who listened to him, the man who cared about him, the man who is still out of bounds. With only half an eye on the job, Dexter inadvertently puts Felix in an extremely compromising position. The mission goes catastrophically wrong, leaving Felix to bear the brunt of the repercussions. With his commanding officer after his blood, and Felix running from him, Dexter is desperate to put things right.

Felix Brook, schoolmaster, is devoted to Hestingley’s school and its pupils. His life is quiet and unremarkable, but When Mark Dexter turns up at an Old Boys’ dinner, he turns Felix’s life inside out. In the decade since he last saw him, the wild, unpredictable schoolboy has become a devastatingly attractive man. Felix can scarcely believe it when Dexter makes his attraction clear, it’s like a dream come true. Until it all goes wrong.

Reluctantly thrown together at the Winsford Green annual Summer Fete, Felix and Dexter attempt to piece together what happened, rebuild trust, and deal with the searing passion that still burns between them. When the truth is finally revealed, Felix must not only prove his innocence, but hold tightly to love as Dexter’s world crumbles beneath him.

My name is Ruby Moone and I love books. All kinds of books. My weakness is for romance, and that can be any kind, but I am particularly fond of historical and paranormal. I decided to write gay romance after reading some fantastic books and falling in love with the genre, so am really thrilled to have my work published here. The day job takes up a lot of my time, but every other spare moment finds me writing or reading. I live in the north west of England with my husband who thinks that I live in two worlds. The real world and in the world in my head...he probably has a point!

This one is loaded with twists and turns and there are plenty of frustrating moments revolving around the more prominent man on the cover, the undercover spy Mark Dexter and the man in the bottom corner, his former schoolmaster Felix Brook.

However, if you've read the first two books in this series you will know that author Ruby Moon is sneaky that way, drawing you in with an arched eyebrow here and there only to present you with the most logical conclusion before your stomach drops.

The basic plot (well, it's complicated, not quite basic) is most properly explained by the blurb for the book, but you will need to be prepared for the wonderful little surprises she tosses at us when it comes to Mark and Felix getting romantically involved.

The ever-present dangers of Regency era homophobia are dealt with in a manner that brings in characters from previous books in the series, and there are plenty of reasons to believe this could have actually happened.

Outstanding addition to a superb series.

This one was close to five stars until those last three chapters, where editing fell off noticeably, and the entirely wrong name (!) appeared, which yanked me right out of the story. The themes of trust, betrayal, family, and childhood trauma played out well, so even in the less well-edited resolution chapters, I could fully appreciate the healing and renewal.

An enchanting story of love, intrigue and family discovery. Dexter and Felix had known each other since Dexter was a student at the school where Felix was a master. As the story unfolds so does their love come to life.
Characters that have developed throughout the series make this book compelling and delightful. Read them in order for the best appreciation.

(Spy) Captain Mark Dexter had a long-ago boyhood crush on Schoolmaster Felix Brooks that may now hamper his new spy assignment. This is a well-written, intriguing, adventurous, and romantic tale. It’s funny, sweet, sexy, has bits of derring-do, several heroic rescues and other surprises. Throw in dysfunctional families and a multitude of spies, and of course, sexy, smart, and frustrating MCs. I loved every bit, but I also love historical romance.

The suspicions are everywhere rampant and consuming. No one knows who or how to trust. Friends come under the glass and acquaintances rise to the fore. A rollicking good romance surrounded by suspense. What could be better?

This started out strong, but as the action tapered off (after they left the school to go to Winsford Green) so did my enjoyment. It was good…just not as exciting. I hope the author continues this series (I would love the Marquis of Winsford and Hessledon’s story); she’s very talented.

I enjoyed that the intrigue of the investigation added complexity to the romance between Felix and Mark. I especially appreciated that while they met when Mark was a student, this takes place 10 years later. It makes sense that neither man has any models of relationships and family (gay or straight) given their histories, which adds to their struggle to build a relationship.

While this _could_ be read as a standalone, it will make more sense read in series to have the larger context of Winsford Green, Hesseldon, and the Home/Alien Offices.

I was a bit disappointed that we're just told about the resolution to the investigation.

An interesting read, with a reasonable plot. My only criticism is about language- would men in this era have used the f word in such the way it has been used? I think not.

What a great book! Fantastic characters, intriguing story and with a great ending too. I have read the previous Winsford Green books, and they are all really great.
