About the author

Holly lives in a little white cottage by the sea. She studied media at university which led to a very glitzy career as a hotel receptionist followed by a even more glamorous two years working in a bank. The moment that one of her colleagues received the much coveted carriage clock for fifteen years’ service was the moment when she knew she had to escape. She quit her job and returned to university to train to be a teacher. Three years later, she emerged wide eyed and terrified that she now had responsibility for the development of thirty young minds. She taught for four years and then escaped the classroom to teach history workshops, dressing up as a Viking one day and an Egyptian High Priestess the next. But the long journeys around the UK and many hours sat on the M25 gave her a lot of time to plan out her stories and she now writes full time, doing what she loves.
Holly has been writing for 8 years. She was shortlisted for the New Talent Award at the Festival of Romance. Her short story won the Sunlounger competition and was published in the Sunlounger anthology. She won the Carina Valentine’s competition at the Festival of Romance with her novel The Guestbook. She was shortlisted for Best Romantic Read, Best eBook and Innovation in Romantic Fiction at the Festival of Romance. She is the bestselling author of 26 books selling over a million books worldwide. Holly's books have been translated into French, German, Italian, Dutch, Bulgarian, Estonian, Turkish and Russian.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2013I was told about this book by a friend and decided to give it a shot. Even though it's listed as young adult, I really, really enjoyed this book!
It starts off with a big event, which had me hooked right away. I actually sat and read the book straight through, which over the holiday season probably isn't smart! I still have shopping to do!
The story is about a young girl, a teenager, named Eve who is a lot more special than she ever could imagine and the things that 'people' will do to keep her safe are amazing. I won't give away what/who she is and why she's important, but just know she's a lot more important than some guy with a cape or someone who climbs buildings. :)
When Eve finds out what her mission in life is and who she is, things change for her. As if being a teenager wasn't enough stress!
The aughor did an excellent job of laying out the story, adding the right kind of details to keep me interested and to make me want to read the next one. I'm really looking forward to seeing where the story goes!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2014By the crazy onslaught of 5 stars reviews, I'm sure whoever is reading this will be able to find quite a few reasons to buy this book. There's no point in me going over all the great things happening in this book, it's all been said, and for the most part I agree with them. But when I read reviews I like to see the good and the bad, because nothing's perfect right? So I'm just going to talk about the things that annoyed me with the book, and leave the upside for the many reviewers before me.
This is a romance book disguised as an adventure/psi-fi novel . I love romance, I love a little bit of it in every genre. When everyone in this book started hooking up more or less though, it started feeling like a weird sorority drama, and not the suspense filled adventure book it was. I swear the heroine was shooting high school level hormones at everyone around her (which funny enough was more or less the explanation the book gave) For me this took away from the book, it felt like I got tricked into reading a genre I didn't want.
They introduce minor characters, tell us a bunch about them in two pages and then either forgets about them or forgets about them and then kills them off. We didn't meet her doctor and nurses for instance, I could of lived without so much on her teachers. I guess the author was either making her world more complex or setting us up for the sequel, but it was mostly annoying.
I didn't like the heroine as much as other people. She really annoyed me, (although she was more tolerable than a lot of recent YA heroines/heros to be fair). I'm seriously waiting to see whose going to have to needlessly die before she stops acting so reckless. And the way she treated/treats her best friend Seth really bothered me, and it kind of lowered my opinion of her. She actually tried to "force" him to forgive her. She definitely became more egotistical as the book progressed (though it's not all her fault) but as I'm all over egos, arrogance, and that ridiculously popular alpha personality, it's something I can't deal well with anymore, even in a girl, even if she feels guilty about it later. It's also the main thing that might keep me from buying the sequel, as I fear she can only get worse.
Most people seemed to enjoy this book way more than me, and even I with all my dislikes gave it 4 stars. It's definitely worth a read. If you dislike the things I dislike however, I wouldn't buy it unless it's on the cheap side (I got it for free and while I don't regret reading it, I definitely would have if I paid more than 4 dollars on it - my personal ok kindle books limit)
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2013I have to admit, I thought (keep that word in mind) reading this book would be a challenge for me. I have never read YA Fantasy, or any fantasy story. I am a romantic comedy kind of girl. But so many of my friends were talking about this book I thought, okay, let's give this a chance.
WOW.
You need to grab your seat belt and buckle up because from the first page, the action starts and NEVER LETS UP! You are in a speeding car, so to speak, going from adventure to adventure in an entire new world created by the author, Holly Martin. Ms. Martin's mind must be an amazing place to be--for she created this whole fantasy world rich with layers, action, and intrigue. It's a book that is hard to put down, and you are left wanting more at the end.
What is this fast paced YA story? The Sentinel is the story of Eve, who is involved in a terrifying bus crash in the first page of the book. When Eve is rescued, her world is upended with the revelation that nothing in her life is as it seems. She is, in fact, The Sentinel--the girl who has been created to save the world, and everyone around her--family, friends, teachers--is actually her Guardians who are designed to protect her, including her best friend, Seth.
With this revelation, Eve's entire reality has changed. But there is no time to process it, as her life is threatened by those who want to kill her, those who do not share the beliefs of the Guardians. Now that the secret is out, Eve begins to learn to use her powers and learn her destiny...as well as the price that is to be paid by being The Sentinel...
I absolutely LOVED this book. Ms. Martin did a wonderful job of creating this world, and explaining to the reader the different groups and their powers and beliefs. The action sequences were brilliantly written, and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to read them. There are lots of characters in this book, all drawn vividly and uniquely.
And I cannot wait for the second book in the series to be released. Brilliant storytelling, fantastic heroine, and breathless action. Wonderfully done, Ms. Martin.

5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't think I liked Fantasy. I think I thought wrong.
The Sentinel was insanely good.I mean, INSANELY insanely good. More so because I don't usually enjoy fantasy books and this was completely out of my normal genre range. And do I regret it? Hell to the no, because The Sentinel by Holly Martin rocked my freaking world.
Firstly, the whole idea behind The Sentinel was amazing. I swear, the imagination of Holly Martin was phenomenal. She creates the craziest scenarios, adds her magic of words to the mix, and BAM! You've got a novel that's impossible to put down, impossible to forget about, and impossible to not rant and rave about too. She could bottle up that mind of her's and sell it for millions. She really, truly could. The beginning of The Sentinel was brilliant. Completely hooked me in, and then continued to keep me hanging on by a thread the entire way through. I could not tear my eyes away for a single second. There was always action taking place, some kick-ass fighting on Eve or her Guardian's behalf, and the powers that Eve held were just AMAZING. I wanted to be in her shoes so many times throughout reading The Sentinel, just to be able to read somebody else's mind or have conversations with them without actually moving my lips ;) I was completely immersed within Eve's new strange and unusual world, holding my breath and cheering her on constantly. The plot really was something else. There wasn't one single moment where I felt my attention waning. With every turn of the page (or swipe of my finger on my Kindle screen) something new was happening, or developing at the very least. I was never bored. Never, ever, ever.
Holly Martin's characters in The Sentinel were absolutely fantastic. Firstly, there was Eve, Holly's protagonist. I admired Eve so much whilst reading, mainly because her life was turned upside down pretty much as soon as The Sentinel began. Despite the awful turn of events, Eve comes out the other side stronger than she has ever been, and a lot more powerful too. (In more ways than one!) I found her to be brave, courageous, and more than once Holly provided a side to Eve that proved she was still completely and utterly human, no matter what super strength powers she may have.
Seth was another character that I adored. Mm, I found him to be on the rather yummy side too ;) Seth had been Eve's best friend since they were children, therefore knew Eve before everything went up in the air. The relationship between Eve and Seth was a raw, beautiful one, and they both knew it. I loved reading about them interacting with each other, and definitely found Seth's protective and caring nature towards Eve incredibly endearing. I loved him, he was always there for Eve, and I was just waiting for something more to blossom between them.
As well as Eve and Seth, there were Eve's many Guardians. They were totally amazing and I was captivated with each and every one of them. I found them intriguing to say the least, especially the males with their huge muscles and heroic characteristics. One of the Guardians I found particularly interesting was Eli. Eve knew Eli when she was younger. He was incredibly protective over Eve, more so than the others I felt, besides Seth. He was also quite strict with Eve, not wanting to let her leave his sight. I found it charming but could understand completely why Eve felt the way that she did sometimes, basically being constantly under lock and key.
One thing that I just have to comment on, as silly as it may sound, is the fact that Holly titled her chapters. It has been so long since I read a book with titled chapters, and I can't even say why I enjoyed it so much but I loved it. Just absolutely loved the fact that her chapters had titled. It's such a traditional way to write a story, one I remember being around much more when I was a child, and I felt like I was slipping back in time.
Becca's Books is rating The Sentinel by Holly Martin with an incredibly worthy rating of 5 out of 5 gorgeous glittering stars. As I said at the beginning of my review, totally not the sort of book that I would normally go for, but totally the sort of book that I'm now willing to pick up and read again and again. The Sentinel would be perfect for any fantasy lovers out there, anyone who loves a fast-paced, action packed novel full of weird and wonderful ideas that will absolutely blow your mind. In fact, to hell with it, my normal genre is chick-lit and I freaking loved it, so I'm going to recommend this book to everybody and anybody. It's definitely one to read if you haven't already. Take it from me.

4.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining read!
The Sentinel is very different to most of the books I read. It’s YA fantasy and I didn’t really know what to expect from it. I enjoyed it far more than I thought I might. It’s been like a breath of fresh air to step completely out of my comfort zone and try something different for a change.
Eve is a very likeable character, with the weight of the world on her shoulders. What she discovers after being rescued from a crash would be a lot for anyone to come to terms with. I could fully understand her feelings regarding the unusual situation she finds herself in.
This is a fast-paced story which has inspired me to add book two in the series to my reading list.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast paced, thrilling fantasy about saving the world, love, friendship and everything in between.
It is rapidly dawning on me that I have wasted a huge chunk of my life by refusing to read fantasy novels. And this book is just one example of why.
Eve is a normal seventeen year old girl on her way back from a school skiing holiday in France. Everything is seemingly average until the coach she is travelling on ends up dangling over the edge of a cliff. Two of her teachers rush to help Eve to safety but Eve is confused: why are they so focused on rescuing Eve and no one else on the bus? Things start to get even stranger as her teachers have the ability to hold the bus and stop it from falling and as Eve soon discovers, so does she.
Very quickly she becomes aware the two teachers are called Guardians and that they are there to protect her at all costs. When she returns home it soon becomes apparent that everyone around her is there to protect her. Even her dog, Quinn. Slowly she unravels the mystery and finds out the reason why she needs to be protected and why people are out to get her.
This book hooked me, from the second I started reading I couldn’t put it down. I even read it whilst I ate my breakfast this morning and I ended up trying to put a spoonful of cereal up my nose. I was dubious about starting this book at first because even though I’ve seemingly fallen massively in love with the fantasy genre, I was worried this book would confuse me and leave me back at square one. I needn’t have worried for this book was so engrossing and wrapped it’s large arms tightly around me. Everything was explained perfectly which meant I was able to follow the story extremely easily and do a lot of gasping and swearing when things started happening!
The plot moved at an alarming pace which kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I was expecting it to unravel slowly but I loved the adrenalin filled plot that it turned out to be. My heart genuinely started to beat faster in certain parts; I was so immersed.
Without a doubt, this book contains some of the most intriguing and lovable characters I have ever read about. Eve is charming, kind, shockingly mature and beautifully sympathetic. Seth, her best friend is everything you could ever want in a best friend: loyal, kind and protective. The supporting cast of characters are just as fantastic and I found myself warming to Quinn and Eli especially quickly.
I loved Holly’s style of writing. It wasn’t overly laden with superfluous descriptions and scene filling; every sentence was crucial to the narrative and each one flowed seamlessly into the next. My favourite kind of story is one that can give you vivid descriptions of the settings but also keep the story moving. Holly nailed this.
There are going to be another three books in this series and I cannot tell you how desperate I am to read them! The Prophecies will be out in April and I for one cannot wait!
A fast paced, thrilling fantasy about saving the world, love, friendship and everything in between.

5.0 out of 5 stars OMG WHAT A BOOK!!!!!
OMG WHAT A BOOK!!!!!
So I was in need of an epic fantasy novel and I had hear so much chatter about this book on twitter and Jo (@cometbabe) had been telling me to read this book for a while so I had high hopes for this book. I am VERY glad to say that it did not disappoint. I hope this review can do it justice but I very much doubt that.
This book begins with Eve on the way back from a skiing trip in France and she selflessly and heroically helps to save the whole class from dying. She always thought she was an average girl with a great best friend. She then discovers that most of the people she knows, are not people but guardians, pledged to protect her and keep her alive at all costs.
Eve is selfless and brave. Eve being Eve can’t face the thought of them dying to protect her (tbh nor can I). While her guardians are trying to keep her alive she is fighting to keep them alive. Eve is an easy character to like and associate with.
Eve’s best friend is Seth. Oh how much I love Seth. Holly put me through some trying times in this book. There were times when I couldn’t read for fear of what would happen to Seth or any of the guardians.
Eli is the head of Eve’s personal guard. He is a bad boy with a hidden soft centre. He tirelessly fights with over the fact that her guard is there to protect her no matter what, even is it means risking their own lives. Lucas and Quinn are two of my favourite characters in this book.
It shows such skill as a writer for Holly to be able to switch from the swoonworthy 100 proposals to the epic fantasy of The Sentinel. Holly makes every word count in this book. There isn’t a sentence that is just there for the sake of it. Every character is well described you can imagine their facial expressions, their stance, the exact location they are in without it being overbearing.
I absolutely loved this book and I am dying to read the second book (The Prophecies) so I will be bumping it up my TBR.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb super hero fantasy adventure - can't wait to read the next in series!
From the coach crash start to the very end this is an enthralling, action packed fantasy adventure in which seventeen year old Eve Jones discovers that her nothing in her life so far has been what she’d assumed. With super strong guardians protecting her against foes she’d never known about, it is a race for Eve to develop her own powers to help prevent the world as we know it being totally destroyed.
As she learns more about her real origins, the prophecy concerning her future and that of those she cares for as well as about those seeking to assassinate her, this is a real page turner. The characters are robust, believable and they and the scenarios are brought to life by the author’s skilled word craft. I just didn’t want to put it down! There are so many unexpected twists and turns on this roller coaster ride, complete with kidnapping, amazing powers, high speed car and airborne chases all skilfully woven into a well formulated plot that keeps the reader guessing.
I thoroughly enjoyed this and can’t wait to read the second book in this superb series! It is a fascinating story in which friendship, loyalty, love and tantrums(!) play key roles. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fast paced fantasy adventures involving super hero type characters fighting to protect their friends and human life as we know it.
