The Seventh Sister: Celtic Enchantment Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 82 ratings

The Celtic heart is always drawn home...

Down-on-her-luck American artist Maggie Gleason returns to Ireland, hoping to put old hurts behind her. Instead, revisiting the fishing village that enchanted her years before only reopens wounds - until the unexpected appearance of roguish pub owner Conall Flanagan proves that the Ancient Isle is a magical place where anything can happen and true love always stands the test of time.

"Welfonder writes a fabulous mix of magic and romance." ~ Fresh Fiction

Stand-Alone Read ... HEA ... No Cliffhangers

IMPORTANT: Please be aware that, as noted below in 'From the Author,' this is a SHORT STORY. It was originally published in the Mammoth Book of Irish Romance, a huge anthology of short stories. Mammoth anthologies have a strict word count, hence the short length. Please note as well, that there are excerpts to other books at the end of The Seventh Sister. These are included in the hope of interesting readers in my other work. The Seventh Sister is a quick read, but remains one of my personal favorites. I hope that readers will enjoy it as such, a fast and pleasant journey to a very magical place. It should appeal to anyone who longs for a different time and place. Especially readers of Celtic ancestry. Sue-Ellen Welfonder

Love all of her books! This could have been better with more interaction between the characters themselves instead of glazing over the back story. Seems like a great idea for a full-length with more fleshing out of the characters.

For readers interested in stories with Gaelic influences, this novella provides the setting, the characters and the mystery that abounds in Irish lore. Maggie is an American artist who visits Ireland after her high school graduation, experiences a romance initiated when she meets an old Irish woman and is provided rather misguided advice on how to find a local landmark that will hint to the reader of having a Stonehenge-type of history. In seeking the landmark and hearing of its history, a local man, Connall, whose family owns both the land on which the stones rest and the local pub, introduces Maggie to romance and the magic of Ireland. As time moves forward about thirteen years, Maggie has long since returned to America while Connall seeks his fortune in Spain before returning to Ireland and his family pub, where he encounters the same old woman that Maggie had encountered so many years before. There is concern as Maggie longs to return to Ireland at the same time that Connal works to sell his heritage and head to America to find Maggie, neither of them having communicated with each other since that summer so long ago. With only six stones representing seven sisters, the reader will be caught up in the adult fairy tale, wondering whether the two will actually meet, cross paths or whether magic somehow works with the stones to find some other resolution to allow this story to maybe end in the traditional "happy ever after" ending associated with all the good fairy tales.

The writing in this novella works to convey the story in a style that describes the actions as well as some of the details that would perhaps add depth to the characters and the story should those details have been explored more fully. With all the Irish mystical influences, the largest mystery for me is actually quite minor: how can a woman who can afford to travel Europe for abut a month after high school graduation and then not be able to afford to return for the next thirteen years, particularly in the absence of marriage, children or investment n a busienss that could explain the absence of ready funds. However, for the low introductory-type of pricing, this novella provides value. In order to gain a larger audience and stronger grasp on retaining a loyal fan base, the author may want to consider exploring the potential for stronger connections in the time lines of future stories. It will be interesting to watch future writings to witness the development of this author that promises so much for readers of Irish tales.

Enjoyed this story very much. Especially liked the reference to a Scottish Grandmother type who has red plaid shoe laces which appear in several other stories for a continuous connection.

I just love this authors writing. This is a short so you only get a glimpse of her story telling, but the imagery is there in this story.
And of course the old woman with the black boots and red shoestrings. Magic is in the air.

A lovely short story from Sue-Ellen Welfonder. The storyline is based in a charming fishing village in Ireland, where Connall the handsome dark haired Irishman lives, running the village pub. Maggie is visiting from America, keen to see the homeland of her Granny. The Seven Sister’s are the legendary stones placed in remembrance of a long ago King’s seventh daughter who was snatched in a raid, never to return. With a little magic and help of a old woman, the two meet up, and an unexpected unbreakable bond is formed which lasts over many years. Although Maggie does go back to America, the magic of Ireland has no intention of letting her stay away. The storyline is weaved with such attention to detail, most enjoyable and recommended.
