The Signal (Earth Song Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 1,739 ratings

For decades radio telescopes have scoured the skies for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence but have found none. Why?

Could it be we really are alone in the universe? Or is it that the truth has been withheld from us by a global conspiracy of silence?

When radio telescope operators Lauren Stelleck, a woman with a special gift enabling her to literally see certain sounds, and Steve Andrews, a diehard sci-fi geek, detect a signal like no other at Jodrell Bank in England, a chain of events is unleashed that propels Earth towards all-out nuclear war. Can Lauren and Steve unlock the secret of the signal before our species tears itself apart?

The Signal is a prequel novella to the Earth Song series, and the Fractured Light trilogy, and is part of the Multiverse Chronicles, an epic series of interlinked stories that follows the struggle of humanity to survive across parallel universes.

Watch the skies because the darkness is coming for us.

What Readers Are Saying...

★★★★★ “This book was a total blast - a lean, fast-paced, intelligent sci-fi thriller that reads like the very best of classic (and classy) British sci-fi. Taut, contained, with an almost real-time feel to it, it’s a perfect read-it-in-one-sitting page-turner. Will I be back for the follow up books? Oh yes!”

★★★★★ “I am so pleased that I am rather late at this party and the remaining books are already published and I don’t have to wait. That’s it. I have something urgent to do now. Read the next book in the series.”

★★★★★ “What a thoroughly enjoyable short story and a brilliant introduction to the Earth Song series. I came across Nick Cook’s book by accident, and boy am I glad I did. Decided to start with this book first, then move on the Earth Song series. Nick is obviously a very accomplished writer as I stayed up into the small hours to complete this book. A brilliant story with really good characters too. I shall be reading all his books now!”

★★★★★ “Superbly written short story. Great characters and plot with twists and turns on almost every page. A great introduction to Nick Cook’s work!”

Follow humanity’s epic struggle to survive across parallel universes in the
Multiverse Chronicles, a series of interlinked stories that include the Earth Song series, its prequel The Signal, and also the Fractured Light and Cloud Rider trilogies, as well as the Inflection Point time travel series.

Author Note: For my friends across the Pond, please note this book is written in UK English and uses single quotes rather than double ones. Yes, Brits are weird like that! Please also note that there is the occasional use of strong language in The Signal and the story deals with adult themes. Recommended age is 16+.

The truth is out there! Beware the AI.
Exciting & very X-files like. Female protagonist is very surprising & steps up as a Dana Scully, Jack Reacher mix/clone & I lust for her. Look forward to her bad ass kicking some deep state ass & ongoing adventure for the truth & AI mystery to save us. Big thumbs up, read it you'll enjoy. Thank you to the author for this free intro to the series, I'm on board for the rest.

A great story for this time line. All of a sudden more important information from credible witnesses have begun to make an appearance about UAPs that have been squashed by national governments around the world going back over 80 years.
This story takes the outer space theme and morphs that into a visit from an alternate universe with a message of danger for our earth.
The story is written so unscientific minds, like my own, can easily deduct what's being told and why. Once I began reading I was hooked from the first chapter. If you loved Scully and Mulder then this is your story!

I liked it! The story drew me in and kept my interest, I cared for the characters, etc. My only issue with it was that it's short - at 134 pages, it's basically a novella intro to the actual series.

Well written, fast paced and very believable. Good story line good character selection and fun to imagine happening. I liked the location ideas and the expected government involvement. I would love to someday visit the Lowel Observatory, being an old sifi nut myself. But in these uncertain times it's probably not going to happen. But that's what dreams are for. Right!

Lauren Stelleck has a rare ability to ‘see’ sounds in her head as colors and images. Not all sounds, but the sounds received by radio telescopes from the ‘ether’. However, while indulging her passion for experiencing these sounds at the Lovell Radio Observatory, the equipment goes crazy with an unbelievably strong signal that causes electrical pyrotechnics not just at Lovell but also at radio telescopes worldwide. What could possibly cause such a phenonema? Whatever it is, the government sees it as a threat to national security and locks Lovell, and Lauren down.

The Signal is the ‘hook’ for the four Earth Song Series. It is an effective hook making readers want to understand where the phantom signal is coming from and what the effects will be. It is well written, mysterious, suspenseful, and entertaining, and a fine four star story, worth only three stars because it is merely a ‘hook’for a serial series

Is a bit YA but I liked it. Good banter, it’s as if the x files was a spaghetti western. Entertaining.

Combining both Sci-Fi and Government Coverups, this author takes on a fast paced adventure through a “First Contact” event. Strong Female protagonist has enchanted me, while the men in this story appear more like Howard and Raj on The Big Bang Theory. That being my only criticism of this book, being a strong male protagonist myself. Penny may have rival for my affection.

If anyone hasn’t seen The Big Bang Theory, then my references will be misunderstood. Are there any?

I going to follow Sentinel for now, for the sake of my marriage.

At first it seemed a breezy, lite read, not serious, with a bubble-headed female scientist. But the plot twists grew on me and I got involved in the story. I loved it by the end! The woman was still pretty ditzy, but she gained some grit during the crisis. Creative problem solving- I’ll give that 5 stars every time!

The intro lasts longer than in a lot of books with a similar theme - character development, setting, etc but once the action starts it really speeds up. Near the middle/end one of the characters mentions Mulder and Scully from the X-Files. I would say it's an appropriate comparision. The beginning of the book really does a good job of introducing the characters and explaining their backgrounds, viewpoints, and relationships which is something that it took the X-Files a whole series to create but at one point it just made me ask "is it ever going to start?" but it was worth hanging in because it went white hot once it started.

There is a soft cliff-hanger... one of those where you aren't completely compelled to continue but the full story is still out there...

“Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.”Carl Sagan
This has been a wonderful introduction of synaesthesia, the ability to see figures and colours from sound, a rare ability, and to the most important question: are we alone in this universe? Do multiverses exist? Mix a transcendence discovery with government interventions, a secret organization, the mystery and intrigue involved makes up an explosive combination of SciFi thriller, just what I love! The characters interact realistically, with excitement, trepidation, fear and optimism and determination. Im definitely going to follow the series!
