The Silken Knot (Three Sisters) Kindle Edition
From award-winning author Liz Harris comes the second standalone novel in the sweeping epic series Three Sisters, in which each book tells the story of one of the three Hammond girls.
The Silken Knot is Iris’s story
Dinan, 1947
Out of options, Iris Hammond makes the difficult decision to marry Pierre Rousseau, a man she’d never met until they stood together in front of the priest. Pierre, too, has his reasons for marrying Iris, a woman he doesn’t know.
Taken by Pierre from Jersey to his close-knit community in Brittany, France, Iris faces him at the end of the first day of a marriage she hadn’t wanted, and determines that, nevertheless, she will make their marriage a success.
Unsuspected by either Iris or Pierre, Marcel Pascal, the brother of Pierre’s late wife, and Elodie Vidal, Pierre’s shop assistant, each have a hidden agenda for wanting to destroy Pierre’s marriage as soon as they possibly can, and to see him alone and unhappy.
With Iris and Pierre completely unaware of the underhand scheming by people they think of as friends, Marcel and Elodie’s cruel plans stand a very good chance of bearing fruit.
A page-turning, emotional story of life in 1947 in Dinan, Brittany, from the author of Darjeeling Inheritance and The Road Back. Perfect for readers of Kristin Hannah, Fiona Valpy, Santa Montefiore and Kate Furnivall.
What readers are saying about Rose’s story, The Loose Thread, by award-winning author Liz Harris, the first standalone novel in Three Sisters.
It was really interesting to read and absorb the human experience of the German occupation of Jersey in WWII, and particularly glimpses of the German perspective too. Rose's tale is gripping and well-told as she deals with both physical and emotional upheaval. It was a real page-turner to find out how it all concludes. Recommended for fans of romance, WWII history and human interest stories. EC (Amazon review)
A fascinating account of the occupation of Jersey in WW2. This story vividly brought the author’s carefully researched details to life for me. CharlyB (Amazon)
The novel is impeccably researched, and all the detail of life in Jersey and in the women’s internment camp, is brought brilliantly to life. This is a book suitable for anyone who likes a romance with plenty of history. Liz Harris excels at painting relationships and family dynamics. There are no graphic depictions of war or atrocities, and yet the author seems to keep them simmering in the background to give a shifting sense of unease. Highly recommended for lovers of romantic historical fiction. fictionreader (Amazon review)
I was gripped by the changing landscape when the war started. I really enjoyed the sense of dual narrative with the split between London and Jersey, highlighting the lack of communication Rose must have felt. Pats (Amazon review)
It was easy to get drawn into the story and it kept me turning the pages to find out what happened next. Mrs CRM (Amazon review)
A fascinating read set between London and Jersey during the German occupation. A love story with trials and tribulations. Kitty (Amazon review)
Enthralling WW2 drama. Tiny but fascinating details are woven into the drama. Amazon Customer (Amazon review)

- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIris loved a man who told her he was single, but he was married and as soon as he heard show was with his child - he was gone! She moved to jersey to stay with her sister and had the child, Grace, but hated the farm life- so her Brother in-law found someone in France who was a widower with an 11 year old daughter who would marry her. Pierre will not consummate the marriage and his brother in law sets about to destroy that marriage- in the end his brother in law finds he is in love with Eloide and Iris and Pierre want more children and are happy!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIris married Pierre without ever meeting him. It was to be a convenience for both: she wanted to leave Jersey and find a new life for herself and daughter, he wanted a caregiver for his daughter and a buffer from his former in-laws. Iris had some ambiguous notions at the outset of the marriage: a complete relationship with a stranger, including passion and commitment. Peirre seemed to expect a housekeeper and part-time nanny, although he was a good father to Iris' daughter from the beginning. Their gradual accommodation and understanding was satisfying. I was not surprised with the revelation about Monique. Marcel began as unlikeable but his reformation was welcome. There are still some bumps in the road with Elodie that could be resolved in a sequel--she looks to have transferred her hero worship from Pierre to Marcel.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLiz Harris story The Silken Knot is a sweet continuation of the WWII Silken story series. In this story, we read about post WWII life for Iris and Pierre. What starts as a marriage of convenience faces obstacles, petty revenge, and people with character flaws. The characters are enjoyable and come across as Hollywood has created post WWII people. Proud, strong, and slightly colder than before the war. You will end up routing for Iris and Pierre even through their own lack of bad decisions. Get a cup of tea and sip while you are entertained.
I am grateful for the ARC from Niche Reader. Although my opinion is my own. I am invested now and look forward to more from Ms. Harris.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2024Format: KindleI really enjoyed reading The Silken Knot. I found the romantic story of Iris and Pierre interesting especially with the backdrop of historical content.
The betrayal and deception by so called friends made the story intriguing particularly since it contributed to the eventual coming together of married couple Pierre and Iris.
This is a good read for those interested in romance, drama and historical novels.
I received a complementary copy of The Silken Knot from the Niche Reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2024Format: KindleAlthough this is the second book about a trio of sisters, it reads as a stand-alone book. I had no idea going into the story that there had been a previous one and it was fine. I do, now, want to read the first and the third. Each book focuses on one of three sisters apparently. This one has Iris as the main sister, who is unmarried and has a child. She agrees to marry a man Pierre, whom she has never met.
The book focuses on the couple trying to get to know each other when there are people in the town he live in against their marriage and want to see it fail. I wanted a little more character development, but I was invested in them making it work. The historical setting and the small town they reside in made the book very interesting. I definitely wanted to keep reading to find out what happens. I'd give it more of a 3.5, than a 4, but I couldn't put half stars! It was close to being a 4, but I found myself just wanted to know a little more about the characters themselves overall.
I would recommend the book to friends to read as it was quite enjoyable! I am going to find/read the other sisters' books as well. I received a free copy of this book via The Niche Reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2024Format: KindleOn Book 2 of the Three Sisters series we have Iris's story. The book starts as a continuation of the ending of Book 1, but it is very well explained as describe that it can be read as a standalone.
Iris, unmarried and with a baby daughter is getting married to Pierre, whom she has never laid eyes upon, and is being whisked away to a little town in France. What would her life be over there? Would she be happy living with a man who she doesn't know at all?
But as much as her doubts are nagging her, there are also people in the village that doesn't want her there, and want Pierre to suffer and never be happy again.
Would Iris and Pierre learn to love each other and be happy?
With good characters that grow within the book and a nice story this book was heartwarming and very hard to put away.
Can't wait to read the next book in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2024Format: KindleI enjoyed Liz Harris's The Silken Knot. After I finished it, I realized that it is a continuation of a series, however, the book read like a standalone to me, which was satisfying.
The book takes place after WWII, and centers on the arranged marriage between Iris and Pierre, who hadn't met before their wedding day. Getting to know each other proves to be challenging, due to both their communication (or lack thereof) and to the interference by others. I ended up rooting for Iris and Pierre, as will you. Reading about Post-War France was fascinating, and I felt that the descriptions were well-researched.
I'm interested in reading the other books in the series. I hope that you will also enjoy this book!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2024Format: KindleFor me this book was just okay. The characters were not as developed as I would have liked, but the plot was fun. I really enjoyed the historical setting as well. I also did not read the prior book, and while this did not impact my understanding of the text, maybe it would’ve helped me relate to or appreciate the characters better. I would say for the right reader this would be more of a hit!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Silken Knot
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLondon 1947: when Iris discovers she is pregnant, unmarried and deserted, her parents send her to stay with her sister on the Island of Jersey. When Frenchman Pierre, a friend of Rose's husband Tom, offers her marriage though he has never met Iris and her daughter Grace, she accepts and goes to live in France.
The marriage is in name only and Iris quickly discovers that she will not be made welcome by the family of Pierre's first wife who was killed during the war. His twelve-year-old daughter, however, accepts Iris and immediately loves little Grace.
This is a story of secrets and revenge and a very fitting follow up to the first book, The Loose Thread. I look forward to reading the third book in the series, The Woven Lie, later in the year. The series is about three sisters, their parents who own and run haberdashery stores, haberdashery and sewing is throughout the stories and all three books are so very aptly titled.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance in Dinon Post War
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Silken Knot is Iris Hammond’s story set just after WWII in Dinon. Pierre, a widower, and connected to Iris’s family as he, too, has haberdashery concerns marries Iris who is a single mother, a disgrace at this time, particularly in a small town very Catholic society. He takes on her baby as a sibling to his own daughter. However, the marriage is unconsummated for varying reasons on both sides. The tensions in this novel centre around Pierre’s previous brother in law’s determination to destroy Pierre and the growing relationship between Pierre and Iris. I enjoyed the relevance of the French Resistance here as a motivator. Although the premise of this novel initially felt improbable, the characters are so well drawn and the narrative so expertly plotted it was not difficult to become absorbed and intrigued by the story. I thought it’s plotting quite brilliant and whilst love wins through all obstacles how we actually reach that point is quite unpredictable here. Move over Joanne Harris and Chocolat. This is good too. I loved the beautifully imagined and clearly researched very visual French setting, the cafes, the haberdashery business and importantly the characters both wicked and good. I thought the Bastille celebration section especially well done. This novel has a dark fairy tale feel to it which I loved. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really engaging read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed The Silken Knot by Liz Harris very much. The book is the second in a Trilogy following the lives of three sisters but can be read as a standalone.
It is set just after WW2, and the main character Iris, an unmarried mother, moves to France after an arranged marriage to Pierre, a French widower. Although unusual in that they do not meet until the wedding, the plot and characters make this scenario believable, and I was fully immersed in the story from the outset. As always with her books, the story was enhanced by the vivid descriptions of the countryside and interesting facts about the history of Dinan where most of the story is set. Iris and Pierre face many interferences in their relationship which is complicated by living close to his first wife’s family.
A really engaging read and I look forward to reading the next in the series.
