The Soldier's Stand (Lord's Learning Book 2) Kindle Edition
Summer, 1626.
Europe is ablaze as the supporters of the exiled Elector Palatine, who was also briefly King of Bohemia, challenge Emperor Ferdinand. The emperor’s new general, Wallenstein, has achieved a crushing victory over the feared mercenary commander Mansfeld at Dessau, but Danish King Christian IV is on the march in Lower Saxony.
Amid this turmoil, Captain Matthew Rider must somehow manage both his part of Wallenstein’s war effort and his troublesome young lieutenant, Filippo Schiavono. Schiavono’s knack for finding trouble deepens when one of his three close companions is murdered. Jorrit Musykens, Schiavono’s loyal servant, comes close to being accused, but evidence points to another of the friends, who confirms his guilt by fleeing.
Seeking vengeance, Schiavono and Jorrit follow the trail of the murderer. From covert missions deep inside enemy territory, to the chaos of battle, each step toward justice brings fresh danger.
Meanwhile, Lady Catherine de Bouqulement narrowly survives an attack in The Hague. A second attempt on her life persuades her mistress, the Electress Palatine who still styles herself Queen of Bohemia, to send Kate away on a secret diplomatic mission crucial to their cause.
In a world where loyalties shift and every decision is a gamble, fate has its own trump card to play. The fortunes of war bring about an unexpected reunion that will forever alter Schiavono’s destiny.
Eleanor Swift-Hook fell in love with the early Stuart era at university. She is also the author of the Lord's Legacy series. She lives in County Durham.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2025Having read and loved the first book in this series, I was eager to continue with the story, and let me just say, Swift-Hook did not disappoint. The engaging characters, expert prose, and sweeping historical backdrop are all here in healthy measure, as I’ve come to expect. Our young Schiavono has made friends with a few other young men who are arguably his peers. They are certainly as dangerous as he is, if not his intellectual equal. The group are like a powder barrel and ambition is the fuse. It all goes off and a murder thrusts Schiavono, with the ever-loyal Jorrit by his side, into a mystery that kept me turning the pages.
Meanwhile, Kate is back, and the stakes just keep getting higher. Her mistress, Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia has seen enough after a second attempt on Kate’s life narrowly fails. The queen sends Kate on a diplomatic mission, the success of which could change everything for their side in the war. But such a mission doesn’t come without plenty of inherent danger. It’s out of the frying pan and into the fire for Kate. I’m a sucker for cloak and dagger stuff, so I really loved her POV sections in this one.
The Soldier’s Stand was a thundering good read. Nothing less than I’ve come to expect from one of my favorite authors. I’m already eager for the next one. If you enjoy expertly written historical fiction with plenty of action and adventure, you need to read this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars From the pen of a master
“Battles could be dangerous things” and this wonderful piece of understatement begins the latest adventure for Philip Lord. This series is from the pen of a master, one who knows her period and handles the history deftly, allowing it to showcase her characters and their riveting adventures rather than overwhelm them.
