The World of "The Spirit of Things"
The land of Tellusm is a vast and varied place. From the Elphen (Elves) in the north with their Treesteads perched among the ancient Araj trees to the cursed Faeries (Goblins) lurking at Goblo’s Pass in the south. From the Hume-dominated (Humans) fortress city of Kyne to the Trollems (Trolls) living the simple life within carved homes scattered within the mountains.
It’s where atop three-headed serpents, wizards will use wild magic to battle each other in a game of Portare. A place where a giant raging storm reaching the sky cuts Tellusm off from what lies beyond. A place where the three gods and Spirits play their little games at the expense of all its inhabitants...

Notable species from "The Spirit of Things" - HUME
Humes (Humans) are not seen in a great light among the other sentient species in Tellusm. They are greed driven, multiply like rodents, and prefer to stick with their kind. They are the most prevalent species in the land and believe they are superior to all.
The Protagonist in The Spirit of things, Fulco, is a 17-year-old Hume living in an entirely Elphen populated town...

Notable species from "The Spirit of Things" - ELPHEN
Elphen (Elves) are typically 7 feet high, have amazing eyesight, living for hundreds of years and have razor-sharp teeth and claws capable of maiming anyone who wants to push their luck. Based primarily in two regions on Tellusm these capable hunters and crafters are highly intelligent and vicious warriors.
In The Spirit of Things. A family of Elphen adopt a mysterious Hume boy and bring him up as their own...

They are keen Beast keepers and have an affinity for caring for Hydra (a three-headed serpent the size of elephants). They don't suffer fools lightly and their humour is often mistaken for rudeness.
In The Spirit of Things, our protagnist Fulco befriends an old Trollem named Viegar who may be more than he first seems...

Notable species from "The Spirit of Things" - Behemoth
Behemoth (Werewolves) are essentially Elphen or Humes that are infected with the Behemoth curse. This transforms the person into a huge muscular wolf-like beast. Unfortunately, Hume Behemoth become mindless beasts who prey on any flesh available. Whereas Ephen Behemoth retain higher brain function and are actually quite civilised.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2021The writing in this first book of the series was truly excellent. So much so that I'm surprised it's labeled "YA!" However, it is a coming-of-age story so... At any rate, the world building is strong and on 2 levels, which you'll find when you read it. The characters, both "gods" and others are fully developed over the course of the story. Fulco, our main protagonists, and the only Hum (human) in his village, goes through many changes and develops the ability to control the Spirits and begins to perform great feats in the "Portare" games (and here we have some LitRPG features!). Looking forward to reading/listening to book 2!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2021The Spirit of Things (Beyond Horizon #1), my first read from author Ben McQueeney. I was gifted a copy of The Whisper of Fire (Beyond Horizon #2) and wanted to read this book first which I'd bought back in March of this year. Slow to develop but well-written with memorable characters that make you want to read more about them. December seemed to be my month for new authors, January & February & then March continued the trend, and now April. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2021This is a well written young adult novel. I enjoyed the characters (especially the banter between the siblings), the story, and the unique magic system. I have only two complaints. One, the constant prejudice, though that is explain with the encroaching political pressure of the humans. And two, this feels more like half a novel, not a complete novel unto itself. I will be getting the second novel to see how the story ends.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2020I have had the pleasure of receiving an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for my honest review.
I have only begun reading more of the Fantasy genre in the past year, but for those of you whose favorite genre is Fantasy, I think you’re going to like “The Spirit of Things”.
“The Spirit of Things” is a unique tale of Fulco, a Hume, living in the Elphen village of Tellusm. He is a young adult who is bullied by the local thug, and who finds it difficult to fit into the Elphen village. He gets into one scrape after another, not all through his own choices.
He feels a bit awkward as he takes an interest in an Elphen girl, but a romance begins to bud between them.
When he attends a sporting event with his brother, an event his mother has tried to keep him from for years, he discovers the power of Sapience. He is fascinated by this power and begins asking questions about it. His brother helps him get a horse and he realizes he has a special way with animals as he makes a special connection with this horse. Could he have Sapience that gives him control over beasts?
Then a stranger comes to town and Fulco’s life begins to change.
Fulco’s story is exciting!
There are also three gods who watch and fight over the land of Tellusm.
Ben McQueeney has created a world that is unusual and fascinating. He has also created some very unique fantastical creatures. His characters are realistic and believable. I found it easy to relate to Fulco, and I believe most readers will find they have something in common with Fulco as well.
“The Spirit of Things” is written for young adults and adults alike. If you enjoy the Fantasy genre or have thought about checking out a Fantasy novel to see why it’s such a popular genre, I recommend you read “The Spirit of Things”. I’m sure you will enjoy it.
“The Spirit of Things” drew me in and kept me turning pages to the very end. The end promises more to come and I eagerly await Ben McQueeney’s next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2022It goes without saying I enjoyed the book. The characters and the settings were top notch. But, you really need a new editor. The writing was soppy. Extra words, wrong punctuations, well, I guess if I am going to critics I should have taken notes. Sorry. Check it out yourself. Still liked it. Criticize that's it
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2020He knew that harnessing Sapience was the next step up the ladder for him within the community.
He wanted to show to the rest of the village he could do it too, as well as any of the best Elphen Portare players had demonstrated in tonight’s game.
Any doubt that remained in the village about his legitimacy as part of the Elphen clan would surely be wiped out and he would make his family proud.”
Excerpt From
THE SPIRIT OF THINGS by Ben McQueeney
Fulco, a Hume living in Elphen society, searches for a way to learn Sapience to gain respect and love from his community. Pit against Hume discrimination and his mysterious origins, Fulco learns what he’s really made of.
Excellent worldbuilding provides a seamless backdrop to Fulco’s coming of age tale. Tellusm is a world that seems so familiar in the beginning stages of the story and yet leaves us with the curiosity to discover its secrets. This is no surface-level YA one shot by any means. It’s clear that the author intends to take us on a journey. I was also delighted to see that the author digs deeper into Tellusm on his YouTube channel through vlogs.
THE SPIRIT OF THINGS is only the beginning—the awakening.
I loved that the centerpiece of the story was the sport, Portare. Readers will find it at captivating as JK Rowling’s quidditch. But Portare isn’t just a pastime. It’s a brutal battle of brawn, Sapience and beasts.
Fans of Tolkien-esque works and Dungeons and Dragons will find themselves drawn in. Young readers will empathize with the odds that the hero faces.
I am very excited to see what comes next from this author!

🔅I received this as ARC pretty long back, but somehow I had taken my own sweet time with it. It is an absolute beautiful work full of magic, mythical creatures, and romance. You can get hooked and lost in this amazing fantasy world created by the author.
.
🔅I enjoyed this YA Fantasy Adventure book. It have a perfect blend of creativity and exiting page turning storyline. The cover is beautiful with a very relevant title. It have a incredible theme with the underlying lessons which make it a good read for everyone.
.
🔅The language and narration is fast and fluid which don’t let your imagination break in while roaming in this wonderful world of fantasy. And the short chapters of the book don’t make it feel like a heavy one.
.
🔅 I really enjoyed reading as The story had me wondering all through out that what would happen next. There were times when I thought that I know where the author is going, but the author has done great to beat us to it and now I didn’t know what to expect more in this book.
.
🔅 Overall a very sweet read recommended to all the young readers but everyone will enjoy it as much.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read
This was an engaging, coming-of-age fantasy story. Some small mistakes and slightly stilted conversations brought it down from a five star read for me. I really enjoyed that the main character could communicate with animals and the brutally compelling game of Portare. Overall, it’s a great story and worth the read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it more than most new fantasy works
Good world building, decent characterisation and dialogue, which aren't as easy as it seems to find in new fantasy literature.
The story ended a lot sooner than I expected. I look forward to reading the second book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovable main character set to prove himself...
The Spirit of Things is a wonderfully woven whimsical tale of an outcast coming of age and beginning to prove himself. I enjoyed the story and look forward to following Fulco's journey as the series continues.
My only criticism is that the magical system, for me, wasn't introduced early enough. The build up to Fulco's awakening was a long one, but when it came, I was enthralled in Chivvy's words. I really felt I was there in the Ministry with the two of them. I love the idea of the different magical abilities cast down from the Gods, as well as the mysticism of the moons. The author really paints a picture for the reader as he takes you through the tale.
A great read for those who enjoy fantasy with a streak of humour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend!
The coming of age story is a classic tale, and The Spirit of Things is a great take on this. Fulco is a relatable and loveable character. You will find yourself wanting to go on his journey with him and this will keep you gripped until the very last page.
Tellusm, and everything within it, is a new and fascinating fantasy world for readers to explore. It's easy to get lost in the world and all of the amazing things that it contains. It's written in a way that gives you all of the information you need to paint a picture of what's happening, but enough room to imagine the characters in your own unique way. A trait, in my opinion, that is necessary in all great fantasy writers.
If you are a lover of the fantasy genre, I highly recommend picking up a copy of this book. Ben McQueeney is definitely one to watch and reading this book will leave you wanting more! I can't recommend it enough!
