Editorial Reviews

Review

The Storm is a raw, beautiful, tumultuous love story set in Hunter's Irin Chronicles world. Within minutes of opening the book, I found myself once again surrendering to the author's lyrical, hypnotic voice - a siren's song luring me back to this world and characters I love so much. Beautifully written, The Storm is another masterpiece in one of my favorite fantasy series ever!
--Cross My Heart book reviews

The Storm by Ms. Hunter is another great addition to her Irin Chronicles series and although a novella it most certainly does pack a punch.

Wow. Just wow. I had to wait twenty four hours to even be able to write this review. Ms. Hunter has done it again, but then, she always does. But this book..... this book.... has almost made me incoherent. I realize that fans of Ms. Hunters have a soft spot for Malachi and Ava from the Irin Chronicles. After all, those characters are the ones that sent us all down the wondrous rabbit hole of Hunter Heaven. But. My favorite characters have always been Damien and Sari. Their story was heart wrenching to say the least. That tale could not have been easy to write, and it was certainly not easy to read. I can now say with certainty that Max and Renata are my second favorite Irin and Irina. Their story is almost parallel with Damien and Sari, as Renata is a warrior. She is fierce and protective and independent and a hard woman to love. But Max does. Gah! These men!
The Irin world has changed and will continue to do so, so where does all the pain and anger go after centuries of bloodshed and horror? This tale is ultimately about rebirth, about turning hundreds of years of war into forgiveness, healing, peace and love. Rebirth of the races. Rebirth of a culture. Rebirth of a people. Max knew that change had to occur. He needed to convince Renata that after the horror of the Rendering, that love and healing were possible. He was determined not to give up on her. He. Was. Relentless. How do you give up on the love of your life? His words will make you wail. Not weep. Not sob. Not cry. You will wail the snotty kind of tears. And you will think of this book long after you have finished it. Pure poetry.
Thank you Elizabeth for a glimpse of future characters. I think that the Irin and Irina's future lies in the hands of the children. Doesn't it always?
Bravo Ms. Hunter for another gift. This one is a true treasure.

Elizabeth Hunter has written another amazing book! This book was an emotional read, but so worth the tears. I loved Max and Renata's story. I can't wait to read Rhys' this summer.

Renata found her Reshon, Balien, before the Rending began. The couple put off their mating ritual because they were hiding from Grigori attacks with her parents and performing the ritual would weaken both of them afterwards; making it harder for them to protect themselves and their families. When Balien gives his life to save Renata's, she doesn't want to live anymore. She's running and all alone until Mala finds her sleeping on the floor of a church. Mala, a Irina who had her tongue cut by a Grigori, teaches her to be a warrior, to always protect yourself. So she leaves the librarian behind to become a warrior.

Max has never seen an Irina before. His mother was killed during the Rending, Max was only a baby and was raised by his uncle and grandfather. The remaining Irina were either killed or they went into hiding. The first time he meets Renata, she pulled a weapon on him after having killed several Grigori. He's fascinated with her, and after a meal together holding hands, becomes the start of a 15 year relationship that Renata refuses to acknowledge.

She knows that he can do so much better than settling for meeting her a couple times a year. She wants him to meet his Reshon, yet she knows that she will be devastated when it happens. A part of her died when her family and mate were killed. So pushing Max away is for his own good.

But Max is determined to be with Renata no matter what.

I loved Max from way back, he popped in and out through the series and became a hidden hero when he came up with the goods when no one else could. Now he's moved into the place where he wants more, he wants Reneta. Then we get to see more of Max when he and Leo return to the place they grew up. By the end of Book Six I was brought to tears by the story. It takes a good author to tell a tale of this magnitude, keep you interested and bring you to tears.

The Irin Chronicles is one of my favorite series to read. Book six, The Storm, is a tender, captivating love story between Irin Scribe Maxim and Singer Renata. The love, pain, and passion between these two characters entrance the reader. In the bonus novella, Song for the Dying, we learn more about Maxim and Leo as they are called home to witness the death of their grandfather. The depth of these characters, setting, and plot lines makes this a must read series. If you have not yet read this, or any of the Irin Chronicles, I implore you to do so. You will not be disappointed.

It comes at the end of a book that not only unites two of the most loved character of this series, but also delves into the history and lives of Max and Leo.

A series set in an an intriguing world with fascinating history, characters and stories, it’s a must read and this book is up with the most affecting.

‘The Storm’ was first published in an anthology ‘Amid The Winter Snow’ and was a beautiful story about love and grief, bringing Max and Renata’s story to life. Elizabeth Hunter has also added another novella about Max and his cousin, Leo. It tells of their family, especially their relationships with their grandfather and with Leo’s father. We learn more of Max’s and Leo’s family in this story. Another wonderful book from Elizabeth Hunter that I highly recommend.
