The Tequila Killings (A Murder on Maui Mystery Book 8) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 290 ratings

A deadly fall. A dodgy past. Can Poe uncover the truth before a match made in paradise ends in disaster?

Edgar Allan “Poe” Rutherford has the luxury of picking and choosing the cases that spark his curiosity. So when his love-struck mother-in-law demands he trail her latest squeeze, he thinks he’s wasting his time. Until a mysterious woman from the boyfriend’s past falls off his balcony to her death.

As he digs deeper, he discovers a chain of underground connections starting with a rising tide of corruption in Miami and washing up on Maui’s white sandy beaches. But Poe’s solved enough cases to know dodgy dealings don’t necessarily make the man a murderer…

With the body count climbing, can Poe protect his mother-in-law and solve the case or will a killer destroy a chance at a happy ending?

The Tequila Killings is the eighth standalone novel in a series of murder mysteries with an island state of mind. If you like charismatic private eyes, lighthearted humor, and tropical-storm-grade twists and turns, then you'll love Robert W. Stephens’ Murder on Maui series.

I was pleased with this latest book, having read all of the other books in the series. This one gave a bit more information about the relationship Poe and Alana have (or don't have, as the case may be) with Alana's mother, as well as some insight into why she acts the way she does. Of course, there are murders and Poe gets wrapped up in solving them, while Alana has to remain on the fringes because her mother is involved with the main suspect. No spoilers here, but Poe and Foxx spend some time working together to solve the mysteries in this one, too.

The main reason for giving this book 5 stars, instead of the 3 that I have given the last few books, is because it is an enjoyable story, and this time, there are only a very few typos. Simple things like is for it. Still shouldn't be there, but this time there are only a handful of errors in the entire book, and none of the bigger errors noted before. So, perhaps Mr. Stephens has spent more time on proofing and editing this book, which I do appreciate!

I will look forward to any further books in this series, and hope the positive attention to putting out an error-free book continues! Nice job, Mr. Stephens.

My wife and I have read all eight of the "Poe" mysteries. We both totally enjoy them and look forward to each new story.
This latest book, number 8, "The Tequila Killings" was an excellent story. We have been to Maui and enjoy reading stories that take place on the island.
Robert W. Stephens does an excellent job describing the characters and we especially enjoy how "Poe" talks to the reader. We find his musings both funny and inciteful. We look forward to the next Poe, Alana and Foxx adventures.

I am totally enjoying this series. All of the main characters are here the few new additions. There are several story lines that cut across books, but the main plot of each book stands alone. I find the Mysteries inventive, enough plot twists to keep you guessing. So is a very appealing protagonist who ruminates over each clue as they come along.

I chose 4 stars instead of 5, because I felt that this story lacked some deeper insights into characters and their motivations. With that said, I enjoy a light read like this one. I will look for more books by this author.

This was the best one yet, in my opinion. Many, many things going on and so much action and drama. I loved it!

Too silly to be a murder mystery. I read another book of this series and enjoyed it. This one just silly for me

This is a thoroughly enjoyable book with twists and turns which kept my interest without fail. The author's narrative reminded me somewhat of the "Rockford Files," and his dry humor added to the delightful mix of characters and plot. Robert W. Stephens has become my latest author to follow; I intend to read all his books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another satisfying novel of life and crime in the wonderful surroundings of Maui

Poe, our hero, addresses us, his readers, throughout this series, which at first I found surprising. However, I enjoy this author's style of writing. Poe went to Maui to visit a friend and ended up living there. Giving up a hated career as an architect, he finds himself investigating a series of crimes, which invariably involve murder, often more than one. Add in an attractive police detective with whom he falls in love and an adorable dog called, wait for it, Maui, add a dollop of humour and you have book you won't be able to put down. Luckily, it is part of a series so one finishes this and just starts the next one....

This is the 8th in the Murder on Maui series and I loved it as much as the first seven. These books by Robert W Stephens are a fun read, made more so by the characters who are all now very familiar and the suspenseful plot that "Poe" always solves. I am waiting patiently for more books in this series.
