An amazing heartwarming story. I could not imagine being Edie and trying to cope with the loss of 2 children. I can imagine it was hard for her. She had a loving and supportive family. I was angry that Samantha refused to connect with her mother. "Perhaps we can't always know everything that happens. Not even in our own family. Maybe its that way for a reason." Sometimes we don't see the full picture. "We only see a snapshot." That's why we must not judge. Sometimes secrets are just meant to kept as secrets.

Family disfunction spanning multiple generations. Very heartbreaking at times but in a way that keeps you interested.

As we witness Jules’ relationship breakup, flagging career & constant regret, a mirror image if her own mother’s failings plays out. As the story flows back and forth between the lives of Jules’ grandparents & present day, a pattern of rejection, loss & heartache becomes evident. It’s up to Jules to change her own fate & the author does a brilliant job of leaving the reader on a cliffhanger in every chapter. Beautifully captivating & realistic, this is a tale that will stay with you long after the final page.

I’m usually a slow reader, but lapped this one up—enjoying every moment and following the trials and tribulations of the main characters. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly absorbing read

This is the first of the author's books that I have read and her way with words is quite beautiful, hooking you into the storyline from the first page to the last. I like the jumps between timelines, which are so neatly woven together to create a complex tale of family layers and secrets. I'm sure many of us can relate to the contrasting ways that Julia perceives the world and her place within it as a child... through adolescence, and as a grownup. Very well written!

Just my sort of book. The Cornwall setting, the family history and the mystery of why the characters acted as they did, being revealed as the story progressed.
I was expecting to find out a little more maybe, but that didn't spoil the story.
    A well written, enjoyable book.
