The Time Hunters: Book 1 of the Time Hunters Saga Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 3,128 ratings

The first book in the acclaimed time travel adventure series for all ages. Perfect for fans of Hunt for the Golden Scarab, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Skandar, and Doctor Who.

A murdered time traveller. A mysterious ancient relic. A hidden community of time travellers. A treasure hunt through history to find the Golden Fleece.

Becky Mellor is a typical thirteen-year-old girl. She likes social media, her friends, and plenty of sleep. So when she and her little brother, Joe, are invited to stay with their 'loony' Uncle Percy at his stately home, Bowen Hall, she thinks it’ll be the worst summer ever. What she doesn't realise is Bowen Hall is also home to a baby Triceratops, two Sabre-tooth tigers, and the mythic hero, Will Scarlet.

'The Time Hunters' is a thrilling, fast-paced adventure that takes Becky, Joe, Uncle Percy, and Will on a quest through history to find the legendary Golden Fleece.

Eight other books in the Time Hunters saga are also available: 'The Time Hunters and the Box of Eternity', 'The Time Hunters and the Spear of Fate', 'The Time Hunters and the Sword of Ages', 'The Time Hunters and the Lost City', 'The Time Hunters and the Wraith's Revenge', 'The Time Hunters and the Odin Horn', 'The Time Hunters and the Blessed Isle' and 'The Time Hunters and the Silent Child.'

'This is a wonderful adventure. It has the magic of Lewis Carroll and Kenneth Grahame, the inventiveness of Roald Dahl and the writing skill of Rudyard Kipling in my opinion. It is the natural successor to Harry Potter. Brilliant!'

I struggled to write a review for this very enjoyable book. So much so that I decided not to post my first attempt.

Let me begin by saying that the Amazon blurb I originally read didn't really do it justice. What, another rebellious teenage girl? So?

The twist is that the protagonist, Becky, and her brother, are sent to their eccentric uncle's house for the summer, and that the uncle just happens to be a time traveler.

Still not hooked? Hmm. Maybe neither was I, at first. However, the author perfectly captures the voice of a difficult girl who doesn't want anything to do with being sent away from her friends or home. She doesn't know what to think of her estranged uncle, nor does she particularly appreciate the antique car he brings to pick her and her brother up.

One could almost find her protests annoying, except it does capture the rebellious spirit of a kid either unimpressed or embarrassed by every single thing adults do. And she does get better, a little less screechy, as she begins to fit in at her uncle's estate.

Her brother, Joe, is also aptly captured as an adventurous, annoying little brother.

Becky begins to warm to her uncle first as she sees the place they'll be staying, and then to adventure, as she and her brother find out that he's a time traveler. Who just happens to mostly travel in an old camper van. (Which embarrasses Becky to no end, of course.)

Becky grows a close bond with her uncle, who is painted part English gentleman and part reckless adventurer. When I read the book, I imagined him to look and sound much like Jon Pertwee did in Doctor Who. (Who also liked his gadgets)

Their adventures mostly revolve around solving a dangerous puzzle steeped in Greek mythology. The ending surely points to a sequel, one I will eagerly await.

Hmm, you see why I struggled with this review? I still didn't capture why I liked it so much. Let me try again.

Good, fast-paced adventure with a definite British feel, mixed together with Greek mythology, history and the accurate voice of a child who is not easily impressed.

I really enjoyed this book a great deal, even though I'm not necessarily the target group they intended.
Love a good, clean, adventurous tale that's well written, and well edited.

From the cast of characters, to the storyline, and everything in between, it truly draws the reader in and keeps you turning the pages. Even past the point when you know you need to put it down and get to other pressing matters of daily living. Lol

You can't help but falling in love with all the main characters, from Uncle Percy, Will, Maria, Jacob, all the various "house pets," and of course Millie, and Joe. I especially loved one of the side characters, Edmund.
Wraps up the majority of the main plot and subplots, as well as giving the reader something to look forward to in the future books that are out already.

This is a series you could easily use to begin getting the younger ones into a huge array and blend of genres, including Time Travel, Fantasy, SciFi, History, and probably many more I've not thought of.

You can readily see it being used as a story-time read for some of the younger ones, and solo for those higher up ages. Getting children into participating and eventually reading on their own is a powerful tool, which in my opinion, is greatly underestimated.

Absolutely looking forward to reading the next one in this series.

Becky and Joe are the most luckiest Nissan nephew to have an uncle Percy that can time travel. Can't wait to see what the next adventure will bring. Love the fact that there saber tooth tiger's, dinosaurs and pegasus in the story as well.

Becky Mellor and her brother Joe are sent to spend the summer at their Uncle Percy's estate. Expecting boredom, they instead find excitement, mystery, and danger when their eccentric uncle turns out to be a time traveler.

I liked this book quite a bit. It moves quickly and is very engaging. The plot has a lot of mystery, danger, and twists and turns, but overall the story has an imaginative, humorous feel. The characters are drawn with enough depth to get one interested in their story and to care about what happens to them. The villains are drawn in such a way that you know they are dangerous and mean business. Yet, the tone of the story isn't dark or morbid but hopeful and exciting. I also liked the definite British feel of the story.

As someone with a degree in history and a deep love of it, time travel is always a fascination. But it's often hard to find stories on it well done and with plausible reasoning. This book is well done, though, and the theory and mechanics of time travel as put forth so far in the series was reasonable and interesting.

To conclude, I can envision reading this book again and again (which is about the highest compliment I can give a book) and I look forward to reading the other books in the series.

I love the concept of time travel, that is what intrigued me to read "The Time Hunters." Generally, I become so absorbed in a good read that I cannot put it down until "the one more chapter" is the very last! "The Time Hunters" did not capture my attention in this way, however, I did read it to the end. I think that perhaps, the story itself has "good bones" and maybe it could be reworked to be great. I loved the descriptions of various historical characters being totally different than we believe them to be. Perhaps what I found lacking was an emotional connection that I enjoy in most books. The lack of urgency to find their Dad was somewhat concerning! I would neither encourage, nor discourage this book to other readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Adventure and Action

Time travel and Greek mythology - what’s not to love. This action packed story for middle grade readers was a thoroughly enjoyable romp through time. Mainly taking place in Greece, we get to meet Jason and the Argonauts, Hydras, and Edgar the Minotaur (who, by the way, will steal your heart).
Becky and Joe are being forced to spend the holidays with an Uncle they’ve never met, Uncle Percy. Little do they know, it’ll be the best summer of their lives. They meet Will, who was the legendary Robin Hood, and Milly and Sabian, two sabre-tooth tigers, a Pegasus, and villains galore.
They’re task is to find the Golden Fleece before it is discovered by evil men who will exploit its powers.
Very much looking forward to spending more time with Becky, Joe, Uncle Percy, and Will in the rest of the series.
