The Waking Late Trilogy Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.3 out of 5 stars 506 ratings

Contains all three books in the Waking Late trilogy.

Sleeping Duty (book one)

Gilead Tan and Andrea Fielding survived their stint in the military, got married, signed up to emigrate to a terraformed colony world, and went into cold sleep for the journey from Earth. While they slept, the starship went through the wrong fold in space and settled for a different world, a wild world.

Three centuries after the founding of a colony on the uncharted planet, Gilead awakens to find humanity slipped back to medieval tech and a feudal structure.

Worse, the king who wants Gilead awake won’t let Gilead awaken his wife.

Out of the Dell (book two)

On the planet Nwwwlf, in the lost colony of First Landing, the original settlers carved out one sylvan valley, a lone outpost where humans flourish. But their bright hopes and best intentions devolved over centuries into a rude replica of medieval feudalism.

Gilead Tan, who had been held captive for centuries in his sleeping cell, survived treachery and pain to free a small group of sleepers. But he and his friends now face the perils of life outside First Landing’s sanctuary - without their powered armor, their tools and technology, or anything else they need save for a few chickens.

Gilead must establish a safehold for his crew, but the alien environment does not welcome them, and petty bickering threatens their meager resources. He hopes that a trace of smoke - spotted above a distant ridge - beckons them to a better place.

It doesn't.

Like a Continental Soldier (book three)

The starship Valerie Hall failed to reach the terraformed world of its original destination. Instead, it found a habitable substitute where the settlers split into two factions. First Landing devolved into a rude replica of medieval despotism. Seccon might promise more.

Or so hope Gilead Tan and his companions.

Gilead spent three centuries in cold sleep, held there by a First Landing custom that decreed only one sleeper could be awakened every 50 years. Once awake, Gilead freed two dozen of his fellows - all soldiers like himself - and led them into the wilderness.

Close to 200 civilians still lie trapped in the decaying cryo-cells of First Landing. Their captive slumber haunts him.

But despite its vaunted freedom, Seccon has one rule. No one goes back to First Landing.

Sleeping Duty is a solid book. My wife knows the author and recommended it to me because I like sci-fi books. I was very impressed with the story. The writing is a bit choppy and not high prose, but the story is interesting. I look forward to additional books in the series and recommend to people who like easy sci-fi reads.

Looking at the series - and it really is one long book, with the first being the shortest and least expensive - the concept is fantastic. A human colonist from a space-faring society wakes up from cold sleep and discovers that his colony ship got lost, a less than optimal planet was found, only some of the transportees were woken to begin life on their substitute world, and all this had happened three hundred years ago. The society had devolved into a feudal society with stagnant government and technology.

Book 1 is okay, as our hero tries to waken his fellow sleepers, while continuously shooting his mouth off and getting beaten. It was good enough that I bought Books 2 & 3.

Book 2 is the low point. Basically, our hero gets captured and escapes multiple times. You can see it coming every time - poor planning and ignoring obvious flaws. Motivations of the villains is less than clear.

Book 3 is an improvement - at least he doesn't get captured again, really. This one has lots of battles, once it gets going, though the final one goes on a little too long. Breaking the action so that the designated socialist can argue or be introspective is probably a mistake. A character who appeared to have been captured chapters ago shows up at the end with no real explanation of how he had pulled off his feat.

At the end, there is much left hanging. The king and his champion, who we have not seen since Book 2, are still out there. The savages, if they are, are still out in the wild and we know nothing of them. There are over a hundred former sleepers waiting to remake the world, or not. There is still a ship in orbit.

The author has gone on to write a prequel series. Hopefully she will someday revisit this later world with good answers to the questions she posed. Honestly, I would rather read about restarting technology and society than read more endless battles. I hope she does better with her Chapters 7, 8, and 9 than the Star Wars people managed to do. I think she will.

The reactions of a man held in hibernation for more than 200 years are well represented. He is forced into a society with very different values than those he fought for as a soldier.

This story is a wild one of technology being lost in a distant world. Coming out of stasis one person makes it his goal to awaken others but the status quo forbids it. The fight which occurs is very interesting with some interesting twists for the sleeping colonists. A good book to read.

Consider this a review of the whole series, not just this one book (I plan to post this review under each book).

Here's the deal: I was provided an advance copy of Book 3 in this series to proofread (as a volunteer: no money changed hands and I have no financial interest in this author or series) prior to its planned publication in August 2018. I had not read Books 1 or 2. After finishing Book 3 and finding myself thinking about it repeatedly over the following week, I bought Books 1 and 2. Why? I mean, I already knew how the series ended, right? Well, because the characters had become real, and I either liked them or hated them, and I just HAD to see how the author got them to the point where they were at the start of Book 3.

In contrast to the more negative reviews (yes, I've read them), I found myself emotionally involved with the story and the people in it. I thought the world-building was very thorough and well done, the action (from one-on-one fights to full battle scenes, escapes, deception, chases, and more) was believable and suspenseful, and the characters well-defined and consistent. Taste is subjective, granted. But to my taste, this series is a memorable winner. I plan to read more of this author's work.

This is the type of story I yearn to read. People cast into other worlds with a bit of Advanced Tech and ability above the denizens but facing incredible odds against survival, prosperity or completing some existential mission. As a reader Loving Isekai stories, Time travel stories, and "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" or "Gate"(Anime) stories, this well written, dynamic, emotional and action packed story has scratched the itch I have for stories of the kind. I relish the opportunity to delve into the next book in this series.

Way above usual Kindle Unlimited fare. Initially, I thought this would be the usual rehash of Connecticut Yankee tropes, but it's very much the author's own creature. Well written, verisimilitude appropriate to the setting and premise, and believable character motivations and dialogue. Looking forward to the next in the series.

I don't consider myself a sexist obviously but I've read many Science fiction books by women which I didn't like. This book however I thoroughly enjoyed. That's because it's not a book written by a woman for women. It's a book written by a woman for Everyone. I mean this as high praise thay you can't even tell what sex the author is. A Great concept, well executed. I know there have been many similar but that doesn't detract. It's fresh, well written, non biased and a thoroughly enjoyable yarn. I bought the rest of the series and hope this atmosphere continues. I highly recommend this book to all
