The Woven Lie (Three Sisters) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 96 ratings

From award-winning author Liz Harris comes the third standalone novel in the epic series Three Sisters, in which each book tells the story of one of the three Hammond girls.

The Woven Lie is Violet’s story

Suffolk, 1948

When Violet Hammond sees an advertisement for a manager to run a museum in a village outside Bury St Edmunds, she jumps at the chance of a job that sounds both different and a challenge.

For Dr Edward Russell, forced to resign from managing the museum owing to the increasing pressures on him as a doctor, the person to succeed him is obvious – the highly competent Gladys Wilson. After all, Gladys had worked at the museum for years and had run it on her own on many occasions.

But when Edward interviews Violet, he’s excited by her enthusiasm and ideas for modernising the museum and her vitality, and he finds himself offering her the position. With a smile on her face and the right words on her lips, Gladys assures Edward that she’ll support Violet as much as she can.

But Gladys has no intention of doing so. On the contrary, she wants Violet to be sacked as soon as possible. She has too much to lose if Violet stays.

A gripping emotional story set in 1948 in a village in Suffolk, England, from the author of Darjeeling Inheritance and The Road Back. Perfect for readers of Kristin Hannah, Fiona Valpy, Diane Chamberlain, Liane Moriarty, Santa Montefiore and Kate Furnivall.

What readers are saying about Rose’s story, The Loose Thread, by award-winning author Liz Harris, the first standalone novel in Three Sisters.

It was really interesting to read and absorb the human experience of the German occupation of Jersey in WWII, and particularly glimpses of the German perspective too. Rose's tale is gripping and well-told as she deals with both physical and emotional upheaval. It was a real page-turner to find out how it all concludes. Recommended for fans of romance, WWII history and human interest stories. EC (Amazon review)

A fascinating account of the occupation of Jersey in WW2. This story vividly brought the author’s carefully researched details to life for me. CharlyB (Amazon)

The novel is impeccably researched, and all the detail of life in Jersey and in the women’s internment camp, is brought brilliantly to life. This is a book suitable for anyone who likes a romance with plenty of history. Liz Harris excels at painting relationships and family dynamics. There are no graphic depictions of war or atrocities, and yet the author seems to keep them simmering in the background to give a shifting sense of unease. Highly recommended for lovers of romantic historical fiction. fictionreader (Amazon review)

I was gripped by the changing landscape when the war started. I really enjoyed the sense of dual narrative with the split between London and Jersey, highlighting the lack of communication Rose must have felt. Pats (Amazon review)

It was easy to get drawn into the story and it kept me turning the pages to find out what happened next. Mrs CRM (Amazon review)

A fascinating read set between London and Jersey during the German occupation. A love story with trials and tribulations. Kitty (Amazon review)

Enthralling WW2 drama. Tiny but fascinating details are woven into the drama. Amazon Customer (Amazon review)

Richly developed historical setting and interesting characters
Violet Hammond has a bright future in teaching but when she spies an advertisement for a museum manager in a village outside of Bury St. Edmonds, she decides to apply and is—surprisingly even to her—hired. The former manager and son of the museum owner, Dr. Edward Russell, picked her out of all the candidates because of her fresh ideas to bring new visitors to the museum even if she has no experience. Unfortunately, her lack of experience is just what some shady characters need to implicate Violet in their ongoing scheme involving the museum's valuable artifacts. It was interesting to see them set their plans in motion while at the same time hoping that naive Violet would get a clue. But while the developing attraction between Violet and the engaged Edward adds a layer of romantic intrigue, it's the secondary characters who truly shine here. Their depth and active involvement in advancing the plot overshadow the main protagonists as I found myself rooting for them more than Violet and Edward.  I loved the historical setting and the characters and defintiely want to learn more about them and Violet's two older sisters. I received a complimentary copy via Rachel's Random Resources.

On the third installment of the Three Sisters Trilogy, we read about Violet's fate and dare I say destiny? Even though this book is part of a series it can perfectly be read as a standalone.
The story is a cozy mystery that takes place in the years post war in a small village in Suffolk, proving that jealousy, envy, ambition, loyalty and fierce competition exist not only in big cities but also in small villages, and maybe with stronger feelings and actions.
Compering this book to the two previous ones, I felt that this was an easy and less heavy read, without the dark themes associating with the war, danger, starvation, making it a faster and lighter read.
I liked reading about Violet, and her determination to prove herself as museum director, and the implementation of all her changes to make the museum a mote successful one.
I enjoyed the historical facts in the book, the well described characters and the romantic side of the story.

This is a story filled with details to the point that the reader feels they can walk through the streets of town and know where to go to get to the museum. The book is filled with wonderfully unique characters with fully rounded personalities. It felt like a ramble through the woods where you set a slow pace and enjoy the scenery (or book in this case) as it gradually unfolds before you.

Violet was trained to be a teacher but in 1948 wants to leave war ravaged London behind. When see sees an ad for a small town museum she answers it and is fortunate to get the job. Gladys, a long time employee, thought she deserved the job for years of service and was determined to get rid of Violet. She seemed to be helpful but always had interior motives. Meanwhile Violet is getting townspeople involved with setting up a new, hands on display and encouraging people to visit the museum. As one reads bout Violet’s work the suspense builds as you know Gladys is planning something. This story lets the reader see some of the aftermath of WWII and how the everyday people worked to get past it. I enjoyed the setting, the characters and Violet’s determination to succeed at her new job.

I loved this book. The character of Violet is a breath of fresh air that comes to the museum with fresh new ideas about how to make history come alive and to bring children to the exhibits. Gladys, who has been there for many years, is ready and able to help the newcomer. Or is she? There are many twists and turns to the story that keep you on the edge of your seat. Couple that with some romance and you have a wonderful book. I received a free copy of the book from The Niche Reader.

The Woven Lie is a strong piece of historical fiction, set in an English village after World War II. The story follows Violet, a steadfast young woman who becomes head of a historical museum and must uproot her entire life and move a long distance away from all she has ever known.

There was much suspense and intrigue in this book, as Gladys, one of the museum’s oldest employees, attempts to pull off a great museum heist and make it rich. The romance in the book amongst two couples is pleasant to read, although one couple was introduced a little late into the book. I would have liked to see that couple develop more.

Overall, a great read. I haven’t read the other books in this series, but this one does stand alone, so reading the rest is not necessary. However, I find myself wanting to read the first two books in the series anyway.

I was not as enamoured with this story as I was her other book. The writing was good but character back stories were a little too much. It felt like a great book for teens enjoying historical fiction. Worth the read but felt young.

This was a nice mix of light romance and mystery. The main character, Violet, is a very likable woman surrounded by interesting people, some of whom are keeping secrets. The setting is a local museum in need of help promoting itself to locals and tourists. While most of the employees and locals are very kind and welcoming, longtime employee Gladys is opposed to her hiring and makes herself very unpleasant. What is behind Violet's violent dislike of her new manager Violet and how far will she go to get rid of her?

It is a pleasant, cozy read with a lovely historical setting. I highly recommend it!

Set in post war rural Suffolk, this is the third novel in a war time Trilogy about three sisters. It easily stands alone. This novel tells Violet’s story after she leaves London to take up a position as curator of a museum in a fictitious village close to Bury St Edmunds. The setting is beautifully portrayed throughout this clearly well researched story. I enjoyed all the details. Unfortunately Violet has an enemy whose intent to undermine her is well concealed from Violet for much of the novel . Violet has won the coveted position from long standing employee Gladys Wilson which leads to excellent dramatic tension. The tension is furthered by Gladys dealings with shady characters and the antique market. I loved the medieval prayer board within the plotting. Very original. There is also a love story in the mix as Violet falls for Dr Russell , director of the museum but who does not initially reveal the existence of his fiancé . I did feel Violet’s burgeoning love for him could have been less repetitive and staged more slowly. Even so, it works with-the overall plotting ; it is interestingly developed and adds to a sense of overall dramatic tension within the thriller element of this tale. It’s a page turning novel that will keep a reader absorbed until the final page. It’s a lovely book and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I lived in Suffolk for several years, so it was interesting to come across places I’m familiar with, such as The Angel, in Bury St Edmunds, where Charles Dickens stayed while working as a journalist. But back to the story—from early on in the book, our heroine, Violet, is at a bit of a disadvantage. Her slightly flirtatious conversations with Dr Russell neglect to reveal the existence of that individual’s fiancé. Naturally enough, this signals trouble ahead, especially when Violet must also deal with Gladys Wilson’s jealousies. In fact, I found Gladys to be the most interesting of all the characters—I particularly liked her penchant for forging signatures.

On the downside, characters have a habit of telling other characters what both already know, and the author’s excessive use of exclamation marks (often followed by phrases like ‘she exclaimed’) doesn’t do her any favours. Aside from such petty whinges, it’s an interesting tale that’ll appeal to lovers of post-war historical fiction.

An utterly charming story. The war is safely over but Violet finds plenty of excitement when she abandons teaching geography to run a museum in Bury St Edmunds. She is the unwitting cause of evil plots and emotional turmoil in the peaceful country side. Well researched and written to bring alive the cast of pleasant characters- the nicest people you could meet. With one exception..

To be fair if your reading tastes are for romantic fiction then you will enjoy the trilogy . I read all three hoping to find some meat somewhere- but there isn’t. Beautiful heroine meets handsome hero with the odd sting in the tail from jealous female. Easy reading if you like this genre
