The Wrong Game Kindle Edition
Tall, tanned, and stupidly muscular, Taylor Lawson was the definition of a bad boy–an overconfident footballer whose arrogance knew no bounds. His deep brown eyes were a thing of beauty–enough to make you want to bare your soul to him and a whole lot more.
When his father was sent to prison, Taylor's life spiralled out of control. Everything he thought he knew was a lie, and his passion for the game to a backseat to everything else in his life.
Wasted, and angry at the world, Taylor could see no way out. He was soon forced to realise that not everything in life was easy. But fighting your fears and taking back control was the easy part. Learning to hold on to that control would be Taylor's biggest challenge yet.
Lola Henderson -
After the accident that ripped her world out from underneath her feet, Lola struggled to find her place in the world again. Living through an endless nightmare, so scared and unsure of herself, and with fear playing a continuous loop, she was fighting a losing battle.
Winslow Falls was meant to be the fresh start she needed to find herself again, but when she locked eyes with the star striker on the college football team, she knew she was done for.
Would Lola continue to avoid the boy who made her feel things she knew was wrong? Or would fate throw them together, forcing them on to an unlikely path of friendship?
Maybe Taylor was exactly who she needed in her life to overcome the fear that plagued her every day.
"Two wrongs didn't make a right. But in our case they did."

About the author

Charlie M. Matthews is a hopeless romantic, lost in her own world of fairy tales and adventures. Mum to three beautiful children, Charlie lives in a small village on the outskirts of Oxfordshire, England. Between school runs and generally doing the whole 'mum' thing, you'll most likely find her relaxing on the sofa in her jammies with a glass of wine and her trusty kindle in her hands. A lover of art and painting, she'd happily trade in her everyday clothes in exchange for a paint smudged shirt, but fate stepped in and took her creativity down a path she never expected. The first time she put pen to paper, a writer was born, and Charlie has never looked back since.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2018This story was one of courage attraction friendship and love I really enjoyed reading how both Taylor and Lola both grew from their life experiences however different they were. They had a common denominator there loves were a mess for different reasons. Although Taylor was a bad boy his heart was real and here hurt just differently t up there e way Lola's heart did do she was load the because nothing seemed familiar as her amnesia kept her trapped. Worth the read xx

>I am an independent reviewer. This book is a standalone sports romance with an HEA. The book takes place in England, so some of the phrasing is different than American English. Taylor is a footballer, which in England is a soccer player. He comes from a broken home and is using soccer as an escape. He is also really good at it and at one point the book mentions a chance at going pro, but nothing is ever made of his chance once the story gets going. Lola is an amnesia victim, attending college and trying to re-learn herself.
>Taylor falls for Lola, but treats her horribly, then apologizes multiple times in the story. His cheating really cheapens his relationship with Lola. There is a big reveal for Taylor that really seems anti-climactic. Lola regains her memory and really suffers, yet Taylor leaves her. Lola also becomes a therapist, but without any kind of degree, which is unrealistic.
>This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this book 3 stars. The story had potential, but there were too many parts of the plot that just fell flat.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2017A great love story! This was the first book of Charlie's I read and am now definitely a fan of her writing
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2017The Wrong Game by Charlie M. Matthews is an amazing love story set against a backdrop of raw and gritty real life issues. Both Taylor and Lola have been through their own versions of hell and somehow managed to come out the other side.
Right from the very first sentence, Charlie drags you into the story, and you know you're in for a hell of a ride. She doesn't pull any emotional punches, gripping readers by the heartstrings and twanging on them almost constantly throughout the story.
Her characters are real and flawed, but ultimately trying to navigate young adulthood while trying to avoid the land mines life constantly seems to throw at them. They are scarred by their experiences, but somehow refuse to be broken.
Taylor's entire world was thrown off its axis when his dad was sent to prison and his mum began to look for answers to her problems in the bottom of a bottle. He's defensive and turns to his own vices to cope. His inner monologue will break your heart in places. While he's busy acting cocky and cracking jokes, he's a little bit broken on this inside. Charlie has written his character beautifully, vividly capturing every aspect of his personality and making him leap from the pages and make you wish he was real. God, I wish he was!
Lola has been through a trauma so terrible that her mind has shut down in order to protect her from the truth of what happened. Trying to cope with the loss of her memories, she throws herself into college, wary and guarded because how can she let somebody inside when she doesn't even truly know who she is? Her journey, too, is a heart wrenching one, so make sure you stock up on tissues before you read.
The supporting characters are just wonderful, too. Some of whom I definitely want to see more of. *Begs the author for more* Jake has to be one of Miss Matthews' finest creations to date. I doubt I'll be the last person to go swoony over him. *Hearty eyes*
The writing is just gorgeous, with some sentences and paragraphs where I just had to sit back and sigh with happiness at the perfection of what I was reading. You know the ones, where the words have come together so perfectly that the picture they paint in your mind just screams to life in vivid technicolor. This is a truly gifted author and it's a privilege to have the opportunity to read her words. The writing is smooth and easy to read. She doesn't get bogged down in long-winded descriptive passages, but gives the reader just enough to paint the scene perfectly without you losing interest. It is never forced but feels natural and the pacing is spot on. There are twists and turns in the story that actually had me gasping out loud. The plot is cleverly developed, leaving you guessing about certain aspects until the big reveals when your jaw drops and you can't help but message the author at 4am in shock and awe! BRILLIANT STORY TELLING!
As you can tell, I absolutely loved this book and can't wait for more by this author. I have everything crossed that the next time I see a book by her, it'll be about my Jake. MY Jake.
I would give this book a thousand stars if I could. <3

Drama. Around every corner and conversation. Heartfelt. Quiet. Loud. Surprising. Shocking. Every chapter of this emotional read takes some turn at the dramatic wheel.
Lola and Taylor are college students with seemingly very little in common. Young, handsome, talented, Taylor is ruling the football field, with the world his for the asking. Including any girl that catches his eye. Lola, on the other hand, is doing all she can to fit in quietly. She wants to concentrate on her studies as she continues to face, and battle, the inner demons that haunt her. Their facades are just that and the revelations keep coming as their friendship allows the layers to be peeled away, one after the other…
I was ready for tortured angst. Anticipated it. And I certainly found it. Lola and Taylor’s problems were not minor. They were life-altering, major issues involving family and their life. And I soon came to care about them and their problems. I liked these characters who fought hard to figure out their place in a world that didn’t make sense to them most of the time. They bonded over a growing attraction as well as an “us against the world” mentality and that wasn’t easy to do considering their own fears were often their worst enemies.
I admit the drama became wearing after a while as it was relentless. They were young characters and it showed in questionable choices and actions. The sheer head-spinning nature of the back and forth – as well as the details of that back and forth - left me dizzy on more than one occasion.
Did I like this story? I did. The story was not fluffy but it was filled with emotion that I couldn’t help but get caught up in. Was I disappointed in the speed and frequency of “about faces”? Yes I was. At the end of the day though, and the book, I knew this was an author I would read again if just for the sheer honesty of her voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic storytelling. Epic love.
I make no secret of the fact that, even though this is only Charlie’s second release, I’ve known this girl can write for years. There’s a rawness to her talent, one I don’t think even she is aware of, and this book just oozes everything that is special about Charlie’s writing when she’s telling a story she’s passionate about.
This may seem like a classic boy meets girl, girl meets boy, they fall in love and BAM book, but trust me… it isn’t. There are so many twists and turns in this story, you’ll be knocked off your feet more than you can imagine. While reading it, I kept waiting for the things I thought were going to happen to happen. But they never did. I was smacked up the side of the head with a surprise plot spade every two seconds, and oddly, I couldn’t get enough of those hits. There are some stories you read, and half way through them, you have an idea of where they’re going to go. Not with The Wrong Game. Taylor and Lola keep you guessing, your head spinning, your heart twisting, and your mind soaring the whole way through.
Taylor is… sigh… beautiful. I just LOVED him. Yeah, he comes across as the typical college playboy at first, but there are so many layers to his character that you can’t help but fall in love with him and all his sides. Especially his bad ones. Charlie created a realistic, believable human in Taylor. One that was flawed beyond all measure, but one you couldn’t help but root for when the going got tough. The same can be said for the incredibly charming, yet feisty Lola. She’s what we all secretly see ourselves as being. Calm on the outside, a little lost sometimes, but with a fire in our bellies that will explode when provoked. Only Lola had no chance of fighting off anything when it came to Taylor. They both have secrets that haunt them and pasts that just will not play ball (excuse the pun) but once you find out what those secrets are, your mind will ex-pa-lode.
Charlie’s storytelling abilities blew me away. I knew she was good, but I had no idea she was The Wrong Game good. And you know what? I have a feeling this is just the start for her. I have a feeling this is just an appetiser of what she’s going to serve up for us in the future. If I’m right then I can honestly tell you all that I can’t wait to sit down at her table and guzzle down whatever she serves up to me next.
She’s got talent. This story has got heart. You’ve got the opportunity to be a part of it. Do it. Do it now. Read the damn book. You have no idea what game Charlie M. Matthews is about to play with you, but if this book is wrong, I don’t want to be right. Read it. Devour it. Fall in love like you’re young again. I did. I’d do it all again tomorrow.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Wrong Game Is So Right.
As a football fan I was looking forward to reading this book because there are not many written based around football ( soccer ).
However don't be put off if you aren't a sports fan because although the two main male characters both play football for their college and dream of playing professionally , the football plays along in the background with the main focus of the story being Taylor and Lola .
Taylor pretends to be the bad boy of the team, giving everyone the illusion everything is fine but the facade masks his despair. Lola is the new girl but has issues of her own because she has lost her memory due to an accident and is trying to find out who she really is. They slowly become friends and she sees a different side to Taylor. They are attracted to each other but they find it hard to cope with a relationship with all their other issues. They are both complicated with many layers and it is interesting how they deal with their problems . There is a great selection of other characters , I particularly liked Taylor's cousin Jake and the bond they had both on the football pitch and off. There are many twists and turns throughout the book along with some surprises and shocks. The author shows what affect family secrets can have on a person and she also covers many of the problems young adults face growing up , especially what some of them go through at college. This is an emotional read on many levels but there are also places where I laughed and cheered . This was my first book by this author which I thoroughly enjoyed and I am looking forward to reading Jake and Mel's story next as I thought she made a good 'bad girl'.

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit confusing
The plot was interesting and the character were likeable however, I couldn’t make it through the first half of the book because the time and setting kept jumping from one to another and it was a bit frustrating and confusing to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars for this fabulous story!
When I opened the book at the first page I really didn't know what to expect. The Wrong Game is the first book by this author that I have read and it certainly won't be the last. I was hooked from the very first chapter and unable to put my kindle down until the very end.
Although this is a sports romance I actually enjoyed that so much of the story was away from the pitch. I adored the characters Taylor and Lola. I fell for Taylor almost as instantly as all the girls on campus seem to do. But there is more to this typical young college man. Taylor has a ton load of baggage to carry with him and even though we see him struggle to deal with his past, he is the most caring person underneath it all. He meets Lola and falls for her on first sight. Not used to having feelings towards someone is a challenge for him, plus Lola also has a lot from her past to deal with too and I hoped that through all the twists and turns in their story that they would find themselves together in the end.
I felt that the secondary characters in the story played their parts brilliantly. The revelations towards the end of the book have me wanting to dive straight into the next book - A Different Game. I felt a great connection between all the characters in this novel. My stomach was in turmoil for much of the story as I hoped everything would work out well for both Taylor and Lola.
I thought the author wrote about the various situations that the characters faced in the story and effects that they can have on individuals perfectly. I felt every emotion possible and I hope that you enjoy this story as much as I did.
