The Wrong Game: A Sports Romance Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 9,220 ratings

An angsty, enemies-to-lovers, #BestofBookTok sports romance from USA Today and #1 Amazon bestselling author Kandi Steiner.

Two season tickets. One genius idea. Zero interest in a relationship.

Gemma Mancini’s plan is simple. Step one: find hot, preferably funny, and definitely single men. Step two: take a new guy to each home game for the rest of the football season. It’s time for her to get back in the dating game, and besides, she can’t think of a better way to use the season tickets she bought for her ex-husband.

It’s a foolproof plan, until her bartender offers to be her practice round.

Zach Bowen is infuriating. Presumptuous, overbearing and absolutely, undeniably gorgeous.

He’s determined to be Gemma's only date this season and is ready to do whatever it takes, even if that means sabotaging any of her potential matches.

But Gemma isn't ready for anything serious, no matter how charming she finds his antics. After all, Zach can try his best to change the rules, but he can’t win if he’s playing the wrong game.

Kandi Steiner is a USA Today and #1 Amazon Bestselling Author living in Tennessee. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. Her love for writing started at the ripe age of 10, and in 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.”

She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a hopeless romantic and found herself bursting at the seams with love stories she was eager to tell.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, planning her next adventure, or pole dancing (yes, you read that right). She enjoys live music, traveling, hiking, yoga, spending quality time with her family (fur babies included) and soaking up the sweetness of life.

More than just a sports romance.
“Now, I only wanted to lean on myself, because I was the only one I could depend on to not let me fall.” When it comes to sports romances, Kandi is one of my go to authors. There’s just something about her storytelling and unforgettable characters that always keep me coming back for more! Not to mention, no one does angsty romances quite like Kandi and this book didn’t disappoint. The Wrong Game had the perfect mix of my favorite things in Kandi’s romances…angst, banter, sexual tension and emotional depth. Gemma and Zach’s story was more than just a sports romance. It was an emotional journey about healing and second chances. The banter and chemistry between these characters was done so perfectly. I also couldn’t get enough of the wonderful cast of supporting characters especially Belle. I loved Gemma and Belle’s friendship and can’t wait to read her story next. Overall, this book was such an enjoyable read from beginning to end. For me, The Wrong Game is the perfect read for sports fans and non sports fans.

I absolutely love Gemma & Zach! I read this when it first came out and it still to this day is probably one I will always recommend. The new covers are gorgeous & I’m so happy for Kandi! She knows how to write angsty sports romance books that will pull your heart strings while also in some unknown way, heal something in yourself without even knowing. Plus a little extra spice from an amazing golden retriever MMC thrown in is always always a plus.

Both of them learning their new normal and not being afraid of showing that something horrible happening to you does not define you and they learn thru some of that baggage to make sure they can be the best for each other. Having the support to work thru that from their supporting characters, between his family and her best friend Belle, is done so well that the story sucks you in and you feel everything.

I cannot recommend this book enough! You will not be disappointed with book or any of Kandi’s books.

4.25⭐️ 2.5🌶️ Kandi Steiner is the Queen of Angst, so it’s not surprising this story has tension, along with humor, heart, spice, and emotional depth. The characters are relatable, flawed, and authentic.

Gemma Mancini is intent on never falling in love again since her husband cheated on her. Zach Bowen is intrigued with her the moment she steps foot in his bar. Gemma has season tickets to the Chicago Bears (a gift she bought for her husband) and her friend, Belle, suggests Gemma use a dating app to take a new guy to each home game and have some ‘no-strings fun’. Zach offers to be her practice round. 🤣 They go to the game, then back to her place (where he is very unselfish 🐱). Their chemistry is undeniable, and you can tell Zach likes her but Gemma doesn’t trust men, so she tells him she can’t see him again. So he takes matters into his own hands and buys season tickets so he can sit right next to her and her ‘dates.’ 🤣

Zach helps her face her fear of heights, takes her on dinner dates, they have movie nights, and he gives her personalized meaningful 30th birthday presents that make her OCD heart happy 😊(a custom-made, chrome fountain pen w/an elegant G inscribed at the head, and 3 leather-bound notebooks inscribed with Lists, Plans, Random S*it). "You got me stationery." 🥹🫠❤️ There’s a creative use of a cheerleading outfit. 🥵

"You do realize this is never going to work out in your favor, right? You're playing the wrong game."

‘If anything, I loved that she had her plans, her list-filled goals she wanted to stick to. It was part of what made her unique.’

“No one has ever fought for Gemma in her life. And she's the kind of girl who deserves to be fought for."

‘I wasn't supposed to ever fall in love again. I wasn't ever supposed to let someone inside my damaged, charred, cold and empty heart. But he'd somehow found a way.’

‘The thought that I could be just friends with that woman was ludicrous, and yet somehow, I knew I'd take the torture.’

"Well, you know I love to prove you wrong."
    "It is your favorite pastime.”

“My family? My wife? She will be my everything. I'm a man of my word, Gemma."

‘I was letting him inside my past - showing him my bruised, bleeding heart and letting him hold it in his hands.’

"This time, I want the real thing. No more practice. Let's play for keeps."
    “I always was."

"I love when you do that," he whispered.
    "Do what?"
    "Exist." 🫠🥹❤️

HOW did I sleep on this one?! I’ve been a Kandi Steiner fangirl forever, but The Wrong Game for some reason slipped through the cracks.

Gemma’s breakup glow-up plan? Chef’s kiss. Two season tickets, one date per game, zero strings. What could go wrong? So much. Soooooo much.

Enter Zach Bowen. The bartender with biceps, banter, and the audacity to think he can be more than just a “practice round.” He’s swoony, smug, and absolutely refuses to let Gemma stick to her “rules.” The tension? Electric. The banter? Delightful.

This book is equal parts steamy, sweet, and surprisingly emotional. Kandi does what she always does, sneaks in the feels when you least expect it.

And Zach?? Officially joining the Kandi Steiner Book Boyfriend Hall of Fame.

Definitely grab The Wrong Game if you love:

    ♥️Slow burns with heat
    ♥️Dating “plans” that totally unravel
    ♥️Sports romance with actual sports
♥️Bartenders with boundary issues (in the best way)
♥️Characters with real baggage and even realer chemistry

Gemma, her best friend and boss is Belle who runs a interior design firm. Gemma, makes a plan with Belle to take a different guy to the Bears home games, so she can move on after her loss. Gemma and her college boyfriend fell in love and got married. But, Gemma finds out he's cheating on her, but, something else happens, and now Gemma is at a loss on how to confront him if she should confront him at all.

Zach, is the first guy Gemma, takes to the Bears home opener football game. Zach is a bartender and told Gemma he would be her 'trial run date' no pressure no expectations. Zach is very close with his family. His younger brother had a cancer diagnoses when he was younger. Now he is in remission. Zach gave up college and football so he could be around his brother, and be able to help with his parents taking him back and forth to the Dr's, and being there for the family.

Gemma wants to date around and see what 'type' she likes to date. But, after the home game with Zach, he's all she can think about. Even though she told herself she would go on dates with other men, she finds herself thinking about Zach. Gemma has a lot of OCD, she does a lot of self doubt. She doesn't want to have a future with Zach, because what if..........she gets in her head too much.

Will Gemma be able to date just Zach? Or will Gemma push him away? Zach is all in for Gemma, but, with her broken heart he isn't sure she will ever be ready for him or anyone.

The Wrong Game by Kandi Steiner is an incredibly addictive sports romance with all the feels that grips you from the very start and is Gemma and Zach’s phenomenal story.
Gemma Mancini is completely heartbroken, she has just found out her husband, college sweetheart and the only guy she has ever loved is cheating on her. Obviously the vows they took, vowing to love and care for each other and to be faithful to one another til death do them part, doesn’t mean as much to Carlo as they did to Gemma, how could he do this to her?
So after having a good cry and picking herself back up she sets a plan in motion, she’s found somewhere to live and sorted everything she needs to and now she just has to tell Carlo she knows about his affair and that she wants a divorce. But before she can tell him she knows, he drops a bombshell of his own…he has incurable cancer. How can she tell him or even leave him now? So Gemma stays by side like a loving dutiful wife and with every day watching the man she loved and the man she thought she knew become a shell of the man he once was, watching this once strong man wither away to nothing, has caused a part of her to die along with him, Gemma has been irrevocably broken and the woman she once was is nowhere to be seen.
“Carlo Mancini was my husband, and I, his wife. He was my everything - and that was still true, regardless of who else he’d shared a bed with.
So, I pulled back from his embrace, and kissed his lips - lips I always thought would be only mine to kiss - and I told him I loved him. I told him I was there. I held his hand and told him that, come what may, he had me by his side.
And by his side I stayed, until the very day he died.
Somewhere in that warped, whirling span of time, I think a part of me died, too.”
Gemma makes a vow right there and then at her husband’s funeral, to never let anyone in ever again, to never let anyone get close enough to hurt her the way Carlo has and she will never let love be a part of her life ever again, that life, having her happiness depend on someone else is not the life Gemma wants, not anymore.
    “I had a plan.
To preserve control over my future, over my heart, my soul, my well-being, over the life I would lead after my husband - I had to eliminate the factors that were uncontrollable. It was just that simple.
And right there, in that first-row pew, with my dead, cheating husband’s mother’s hand in mine, I made one simple plan, with one simple rule.
    Never fall in love again.
It was more than just a plan, more than just a goal. It was a promise.
And it was one I vowed to keep.”
Fast forward eight months and Gemma has stuck to her vow of living her life without love and has kept away from any and all men, but that doesn’t mean a part of her doesn’t yearn for a man’s touch, to be desired, to be wanted in the way only a man can provide.
“I didn’t want to fall in love. I didn’t need a man to survive. But I missed that human connection. I missed flirting, and talking, and having someone to watch the game with who actually cared about football. I missed the feel of a man’s hands on my body, of his lips on my skin.”
So Gemma’s best friend Belle has come up with the perfect solution to Gemma’s problem. Gemma is a season ticket holder for the Chicago Bears football team which means she can take a new guy to each home game and after if she’s wants to, she can take him home with no strings attached and she won’t have see him again, perfect…right?
“It’s just a football game. It’s just a night of sports and beer and hot dogs. If I want to have sex with him, I can. If I don’t, I can just go home alone. No harm, no foul. These are my tickets, and this is my plan, even if it was Belle’s idea.”
Zach Bowen cannot help but overhear the two beautiful ladies at the bar, especially with what they’re talking about and he is a bartender after all, it’s in the job description to be nosy! So when he hears Gemma’s plan to take a new guy to every Bears game, he cannot help but offer himself up as a “practice round” to help Gemma with her nerves. Zach was drawn to Gemma as soon as she walked in, how could he not be? She’s beautiful and as a huge Bears fan as well, it seems like the perfect idea to offer her his services for the night, he gets to watch the game from incredible seats with a gorgeous woman by his side, what more could he want?
“So, Gemma Mancini,” he said, his hand wrapped in mine, eyes hooded and sure. “What do you say? Let me be your practice round.”
But there was one thing Zach didn’t expect, he really likes Gemma and even after just a short time he can already tell she is someone special and he would love to see her again. There’s just one problem, Gemma is determined to stick to her new guy, every game rule and despite having a great time, it was always going to be just a one time thing for Gemma.
“In a way, I was kind of sad he’d offered to be a practice round, because I knew after tonight, I’d never talk to him again.
We could have been great friends.”
However Zach isn’t going to let Gemma walk away so easily, there is something incredibly special about her and she is so different than anyone he has ever met before and he wants more, he can’t help it, he just does, despite knowing her rules. Zach will stop at nothing to get another chance with her.
“Gemma might have thought our practice round was over, that tonight was just one date to kickstart the long line of ones she’d have all season long.
But I’d never met anyone like her, and I’d had more fun in the few hours we’d spent together than I’d had in the past twelve years.
If she thought I was letting go that easy, she was in for a rude awakening.”
At first Gemma denies Zach’s every attempt at another chance, she has been hurt too badly to let anyone get close enough to do the same, she cannot risk her heart again, it’s already been broken beyond repair, she won’t survive it a second time.
“there were about a million neon signs hanging above Zach’s head, warning me to steer clear. He was just the kind of guy I could fall for, the kind I could let in, get close to.”
But despite holding onto all the reasons why she cannot risk her heart again, she cannot deny that she does really like Zach and for the first time in a long time she feels happy and it’s all because of Zach. Surely she can keep her heart safe and have some fun with Zach?! She’s more than just Carlo Mancini’s widow, she’s only 29 she’s still got a whole life to live and Zach may just be the key to helping Gemma start living again.
“I was still petrified as we stood there, kissing in a crowd full of football fans, but it was a different kind of fear. It was the kind that came with taking a risk instead of avoiding one, and the kind that was as exciting as it was terrifying.
I didn’t know what would happen next. I had no guarantee I wouldn’t be hurt. And, honestly, I had no idea what I could give, what I could let go of.
But I knew I wanted to try.”
Zach and Gemma are living in a dream state, everything between them is incredible and so much more amazing than either of them could have imagined and although they’ve both been broken by their past loves, the loves they thought were forever and unbreakable, being together is starting to heal some of their broken parts.
“I was letting him inside my past - showing him my bruised, bleeding heart and letting him hold it in his hands.”
Could they be finding themselves again and piecing together each other’s broken pieces? While also finding a love that they never dared to dream of after everything they’ve been through? A love they never thought existed for them and a love that definitely wasn’t a part of the plan?
“I wasn’t supposed to ever fall in love again. I wasn’t ever supposed to let someone inside my damaged, charred, cold and empty heart.
But he’d somehow found a way.
I’d made that list when Carlo passed to keep myself safe, but here I was, just shy of a year later, feeling that rule bend like putty in my hand.”
But when Gemma’s ex mother-in-law drops off a box of Carlo’s things, it sends Gemma spiralling and sets her on a path of destruction and makes her question the life she started to build with Zach and why was she so stupid to risk her heart yet again, did she learn nothing? Was one heartbreak not enough?
“How could I have ever forgotten this pain?
How could I ever been so stupid to think it was worth it to risk this again, to let someone in, to trust them when no one could be trusted.”
Can Zach and Gemma find a way through their past heartbreak and the scars that were left behind and give themselves a second chance at love, at happiness and at a life after loss?
“Zach was already falling, and I knew there was no sense in denying that I was, too.
    I wanted him.
But I was absolutely petrified to fall any further than I already had.”
Read The Wrong Game now to find out if there is a Happily Ever After in store for Gemma and Zach!
I absolutely LOVED The Wrong Game, I have been a big Kandi Steiner fan for years now and I have no idea how The Wrong Game slipped past me and to say that I am kicking myself about missing Gemma and Zach’s incredible story is a massive understatement! Gemma and Zach easily stole my heart and within a short amount of pages they became my all time Kandi couple and I could not put their extremely addictive story down! I absolutely loved Gemma and Zach and all the characters in The Wrong Game and I cannot wait to dive into Belle’s story next, from what we’ve seen of her so far, for one I already love her and two you just know her story is going to be just as amazing as this one was! Kandi is one of my all time favourite authors and The Wrong Game just cemented her at the top! I cannot get enough of Kandi’s amazing stories and the characters who easily steal your heart and who you can’t get out of your head no matter how long ago you read “The End”.

I honestly enjoy this book, it was easy to read I had a great storyline. You can’t love Gemma she’s such a strong chick and Belle was awesome too.
I really like the aspects of the football throughout the story and the push and pull of their relationship kept you guessing.
Overall this is a great book and I look forward to any more from this author in the future.
