These Words Are True and Faithful Kindle Edition
Sam Overton is a young lawyer with a brilliant future at one of the city’s leading law firms. After he and older police officer Ernie Butler have chance meetings at the courthouse complex and then at a leather bar, the two become lovers, and Ernie, who is experienced in the local gay leather scene as a Dominant, guides Sam in exploring his submissive nature. They become inseparable and appear set to live happily and kinkily ever after, until a seemingly innocent event upends everything that they think they know about each other, the nature of their relationship, and themselves.
Written by a gay man who has lived the life, this book explores the psychology of Dominant/submissive relationships between men. At times sexy, snarky, and philosophical, it also explores the questions of how we know what we know, why we believe what we believe, and what happens when our most cherished beliefs turn out to be neither true nor faithful. Along the way, it examines the absurdities of contemporary gay life, not sparing the sacred cows.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA gay novel about a gay relationship written by a gay man, fancy that! Seemed rare to me (and still does). So, off the bat, I appreciated this book before even reading the first sentence.
And the appreciation did not end there. The world Galt has created - the characters themselves (super developed, distinct, and intriguing), what they go through, how they speak to one another, what they're thinking - anyone could relate to it. These Words Are True and Faithful is absolutely timeless; a story about hard-won growth through intimate relations, as well as the consequences of avoiding such growth. Appearances are rarely as they seem.
Despite the familiarity of these themes, the novel opened up a brand-new world for me to explore. Not being a gay man, I felt I was looking into a microscope at something new and fresh, even though many of my friends are gay men in long-term relationships! This is not to say I was looking at the characters here as spectacles - Galt was able to bring me into each man's rich inner world in a way that felt new and charged, and very thought-provoking. Told from two perspectives, Ernie and Sam, we are in their heads as readers. We learn their insecurities, their faults, their concerns. I have never been in the head of a gay man before and it was great to get one author's honest take. Though these characters represent a facet of marginalized people, this story is not about any struggles with coming out or identifying as LGBTQ+. Obviously, there is some commentary here and there, as is only the reality of being marginalized, but the characters' inner turmoil is the kind anyone could suffer. Any commentary is woven impeccably into the plot.
Also, the feels abound. Galt has a wonderful minimalist style that keeps the quick pace going. His scenes are gritty, heartbreaking, redeeming, thoughtful, and more, all without unnecessary words or rambling glops of info. The scenes themselves show you everything you need to know.
In short, These Words Are True and Faithful is just a damn good story about people. It shows that, no matter what we have or where we're at in life, we all experience similar concerns and emotions. We all have weaknesses we're either running from or working on, and so we can all relate to one another simply as humans, despite any superficial differences.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI just read this book this evening (and into the morning it seems.) I’m relatively new to romances overall and this is the 1st LGBTQ romance I’ve read. Glad for the for opportunity to expand my horizons - I really enjoyed it. I especially liked the last chapter when Sam laid it all out on the line having grown in confidence since the beginning of the story.
I hope the author is planning a sequel. I would love to see where Sam and Ernie’s relationship goes.
I discovered this author via Twitter while commenting on another author’s thread. Amazing how we learn about what’s out there when we start networking.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI read this intriguing, intelligent book in three great gulps over three days. I've been waiting for an author to critique the Dom/sub dynamic, especially in terms of how it can be maintained in a longterm, monogamous relationship. I was left pondering what truth and faithfulness mean in every aspect of our lives.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI got this to learn something about male relationships, and I did, but it was also an enjoyable read beyond that. The characters were believable and engaging. There was a philosophical undercurrent throughout the narrative that did not seem tacked-on. In fact, it helped to show why things ended up as they did for the characters. Absolutely worth your time.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt was like a photo-realistic allegorical painting of a mythological subject. I really enjoyed it. The types depicted were drawn from multitudes of real life human experiences over generations. There was even a moral--or message--if you will--like Pilgrim's Progress. I always want to take away something of value from a work of art. I feel the better man from seeing these characters grow. I give it my highest praise.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIn the words of Maya Angelou, "When someone is showing you who they are, believe them the first time." Thank you for a thought-provoking story. Ernie may have the big, bad alpha male and dom daddy, but at the end of the day, Sam proved to be the strong one.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2019Format: KindleI enjoyed this book right from the beginning. My upbringing in a strict, religious setting was comparable to what Sam seemed to come from. I didn't know if I could enjoy gay bdsm, without understanding all nuances of the lifestyle. No problem because I didn't feel like the author was writing over my head! That is a turn off for me when I've encountered that. I thought the book was sexy but MORE than that. I kept thinking about my relationships and what really keeps some going and others die. I found it relatable on many accounts. My life, post religious upbringing, and really finding myself while looking for a relationship is a story not everyone could understand. Ernie was definitely like someone I knew and had to move on from as I grew. I strongly recommend this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA perfect insight into relationships. The author portrays his characters in true to life scenarios with no holds barred. For the individual willing to learn about the gay lifestyle with an open mind, I would recommend this book. Note the book does contain explicit wording.
